Grohl drummed on the first album, Colour and the Shape except for Doll and My Poor Brain, and a few songs on There is Nothing Left to Lose (the first album with Taylor Hawkins; TH just took over almost completely from there). Yes, that means Grohl played on Everlong and My Hero...

Haake does not use odd-time signatures. He uses odd-note permutations within 4/4.

GIGANTIC difference.

And polyrhythms, offbeat rhythms, odd time sigs, etc. have been around for ages. Penny is remarkable in what he is capable outside of DEP and Co&Ca, but I'm not too terribly impressed by his studio work.

There is no "best" drummer, I can only tell you a fraction of the best: Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, Elvin Jones, Billy Cobha, Carl Palmer, Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Joe Morello, Bill Bruford, and Hal Blaine. In addition to several great metal drummers such as Gene Hoglan, Steve Flynn, Dave Lombardo, Richard Christy, and Steve MacDonald.

I would say the three best that I have heard of are Max Roach, Buddy Rich, and Billy Cobham.

Limited to just rock though, I'd say Carl Palmer, Bruford, Neil Peart, and Terry Bozzio.

I listen to Neil Peart all the time, and i don't consider the man a drummer but a percussionist . When i listen to Peart, im not moved. I dont feel impressed, or emotionally moved. He plays so ridiculously fast, you cant even hear a beat 30% of the time. Moon and Bonham were amazing. I couldn't get enough of Keith activeness and his rapid flow with each who song. For Bonham, well.. just listen to Moby Dick, you will agree. Ginger Baker is probably also one of the greatest. I love his personality and his drumming skills. Eric Clapton was pretty lucky. This
Dave Grohl on John Bonham

"John Bonham played the drums like someone who didn't know what was going to happen next -- like he was teetering on the edge of a cliff. No one has come close to that since, and I don't think anybody ever will. I think he will forever be the greatest drummer of all time. You have no idea how much he influenced me. I spent years in my bedroom -- literally ****ing years -- listening to Bonham's drums and trying to emulate his swing or his behind-the-beat swagger or his speed or power. Not just memorizing what he did on those albums but getting myself into a place where I would have the same instinctual direction as he had. I have John Bonham tattoos all over my body -- on my wrists, my arms, my shoulders. I gave myself one when I was fifteen. It's the three circles that were his insignia on Zeppelin IV and on the front of his kick drum."

You can pretty much assume that anything that Rolling Stone Magazine says is false, they never know enough. Bonham is good, but he wouldn't make the top 40 drummers of all time. In terms of rock, maybe top 10, although he isn't one of the "best three" like so many seem to think. There are better drummers, people just don't know it.

If we're talking about Rock and its sub-genres,(in no order), Mike Portnoy, Keith Moon and Neil Peart. But then if you take into account the whole spectrum of music and drummers, you've got beasts like Buddy Rich as well.

Plus, discussing who is 'best' is the most pointless thing ever.

Also, Taylor Hawkins, Shawn Drover and Matt Cameron don't belong in the poll. I think possibly the only reason they are is for having difficult songs in RB.

Bill was a toned down Carl during his Yes days, and only really impressed me in KC when he did that dual drummer setup with them, Phil was an amazing drummer, and sadly most people forget that, remembering only a drum machine on In the Air Tonight (in which in an interview i heard a few years ago, he himself even claimed that it would be the most boring drumming ever for a drummer to do, thus why he used a drum machine)

Neil Peart is great because he's one of the few drummers that sometimes carry the melody of the sing with his many unique toms and percussion instruments. Also, Ringo Starr is vastly underrated. He may not be the quickest or flashiest, but he has some of the greatest technical fills ever created. Just take a look at "A Day in the Life". Most rock in the '60s just had drums to keep the beat, but Ringo really made it a part of the song.

Most influential drummers are probably Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Bonham, Ringo, and Moon are up there as well.

Most skilled are those 5 (Maybe not Ringo TBH) and Peart.

Personal favorites are Bernard Purdie, Carter Beuford, Stewart Copeland.

Still subjective... there are alot of drummers who weren't with huge bands like Zeppelin or the Beatles that were extremely talented. Jeff Porcaro and Bernard Purdie are great examples of drummers who did hundreds of songs for many different bands, but were never really known.

No problem. They're definitely both great drummers, no doubt about that. I've always preferred jazz drumming to any other genre's drumming anyway, especially because of the skill and technicality most of the drummers show without really divulging into wankery.

To each his own right? I mean, it's not just how technical a drummer is, but how they put it together to create nice flowing beats and the energy they emit with those beats. A drummer can be very technical but their music won't feel energetic. That's the reason I don't like Terry Bozzio, talented drummer but he has no feel and his solo's are boring. Bozzio has ass-loads of feel. Have you ever watched him play? He's moving constantly with his own time. If you think he can't groove, you obviously have never heard his Missing Persons and Frank Zappa material.

Bonham wasn't very technical at all...

I haven't really listened to a lot of Zappa, so I don't know much about that. I've only seen his solos, they're very technical and I'm sure the man can groove. I just find his solo's boring as hell, I've watched some of his clinic videos and drum solo videos and I don't like them at all.

you are going to get flamed like hell for this post, haha. Have you listened to the Hot Rats album? It's the only one of his that I actually own but I enjoy it quite a bit.

Honestly I've been wanting to get into Zappa, but I'm not sure what albums to get (considering he has like 50). Maybe you guys could help me out? I mean, I've heard some good songs like; Dancing Fool, My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama, Bobby Brown Goes Down (greatest song ever btw).

Hot Rats is a great start, since his voice never appears in it. :p I never liked Zappa's singing, personally. And it has some really awesome tracks like Peaches En Regalia, Willie the Pimp and Son of Mr. Green Genes. The other tracks are kind of weird but have that quirky Zappa charm.

I used to actively dislike Zappa until I really jumped in and gave him a try.

I voted for Cameron... actually figured on him before I saw the choices available in the poll. I was going to post some snotty remark, lamenting how far back he is in the polls, and then I looked at the other drummers he's up against, and I can't trash any of them (plus the numerous other drummers others have mentioned already. It's really tough to pick just one, but Cameron stands out for me - even against such uber-drummers as Peart and Moon (and Bonham and Grohl).

The first Zappa album I was ever exposed to was Joe's Garage - and it remains a fixture in my collection.

Not only is it a *great* album, it's also historically important, coming as a reply to the senate hearings into profanity in rock music. Zappa was one of very few artists to come out against censorship - against their labels' wishes. Include here Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, the Dead Kennedys (well, Jello Biafra) and, for some reason, John Denver. Much respect to these guys for standing up for music.

I digress. Zappa's involvement in these farcical hearings are part of what inspired him to write this album about 'the evils and danger of rock music'. It's great.

everyone's listening experience gives way to different tastes. I suppose it's because I grew up listening to Deep Purple and The Who on classic rock radio. Bonham wasn't very technical, but he certainly made up for that in power.

Well I guess you could say that. Zeppelin, The Who, and Rush were the first bands I was really into. And you're damn right Bonham had power (Immigrant song ftw). What makes me really like Bonham are his heel-toe grooves (Good Times Bad Times, Achilles Last Stand), he was what inspired me to learn heel-toe.

Joe's Garage is about if music didn't exist. The album came out in 79 and the Senate shenanigans didn't happen until the 80s. The album you're thinking of is Frank Zappa Meets The Mothers of Prevention.

D'oh!

You're right! I'm getting them mixed up in my mind because of how they were introduced to me. Still, out of the two, I prefer Joe's Garage musically.

Apparently I need to re-read my Encyclopedia Zappica.

Uh....what?

The hearings I was referring to were the melodrama and hysteria in the 1980s stirred up by people like Tipper Gore and the PMRC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMRC). It's interesting stuff, if you've never heard of it.

You can hear a much more entertaining treatment of it by finding and listening to Jello Biafra's "High Priest of Harmful Matter" spoken word album.

Considering he had like 90 albums (like half Post-Mortem), and that he was such a big contributor the advancement of modern music, that wouldn't surprise me if it existed.

You ever wonder where these (http://imagecache5.art.com/p/LRG/19/1922/GWT9D00Z/parental-advisory--explicit-lyrics.jpg) come from? Thank the PMRC as Vertrothe mentioned earlier. There was this whole thing in the 80s where a bunch on mothers got together (led by Tipper Gore, Al Gore's wife if you're wondering) and started blaming music for a bunch of problems in the America (teen suicide, occultism, murder) and tried to censor music. They put this list together called The Filthy Fifteen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filthy_Fifteen#Actions), and those were considered the worst songs, lyrically, at the time.

If you ever watch the movie Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, there's a little bit on this topic in there. It's also a really good movie.

I was saying that to the Joe's Garage thing. I know all about the hearings. I have all of the Zappa testimony videos favorited on youtube.

Grohl doesn't rank up against a lot of drummers out there, he's good, but he's not amazing or not even close to the best.

Dave Grohl as solely a drummer I can understand not being in the upper echelon of drummers (though I think he belongs there). Dave Grohl as a musician? Near the top of the upper echelon easily. That's what makes him so great.
