View Full Version : Question for the non-native Drummers

I've just started "playing drums" with this game (I dabbled in Drummania a few years back, but otherwise no formal experience), so I don't really have a great setup for my drum kit. Just sorta going with what feels right at the moment.

My question is how have you been positioning your drum set and what type of chair have you been using?

I find myself sitting with the set tilted about 20-25 degrees clockwise from my perpendicular, while I sit on the corner of an Ikea folding chair (one of the most comfortable folding chairs I've ever had the pleasure of sitting in, by the way), with one of those big pillows with the arm rest propping me up so my knee is lower than my waist. Does anyone have any better suggestions?

I have a plain metal chair with a square pillow to prop me up so that my knee is lower and also i noticed that hitting the bass drum is much easier if you dont hook it to the set. set it so that you are facing straight but your leg is at an angle. I have the bass pedal just to the right of the right leg on the kit and turned at an angle so its not quite parallel to the kit. It keep my leg from getting in the way of me hitting the drums, i play heel down of course.

I've been drumming for 10+ years and I personally like to have my seat low where the top portion of my legs are pretty parallel to the floor. In terms of seats, I'm actually using a real drum throne but nothing to special. I actually went to Guitar Center last week and sat on one of those padded seats that are somewhat in the shape of a bicycle seat. Oh my, no comparison. Pretty pricey though...but it gives you the real impression that you're all pro.

Keep going! I find it awesome that many people are learning how to play drums through this tool...I mean game...I personally feel that this was a conspiracy by Vic Firth and other drum "sponsers" to funnel future business to them :) I'm not complaining...my wife is now playing drums!

I played my first song on Expert drums last night...it was a pretty WOW moment. When I first got the game I had to fight through anything above the first couple of tiers in Medium. I actually feel like I'm learning something as I progress through the drum tour. That's a pretty freaking cool thing for a video game to pull off.

I went out and bought a drum stool as playing in a lay-z-boy was not very good. Once I got the stool, I set it so when I sit on it my knee almost makes a 90 degree angle. This provides me with the best comfort. Also, I play the kick pedal heel up if that matters to you. I have the drum set about 3 or 4 inches above my knee.

I put the bass pedal as far to the right as possible along the crossbar at the bottom and as far back. I might move the pedal forward a little so i can extend my arms a little more.. but I'm trying to keep my arms in at my sides as much as possible as it requires less strength and energy.

I've been using a short stool we typically use for playing cards on that I stick a cushion of some kind (usually couch cushion) on to prop myself up a bit and to keep my posterior from getting sore.

The set itself is pretty much square on for me, but it's probably a good couple feet or so away from my body (such that with my arms slightly outstretched and sticks in semi-proper position can easily hit the center of the pads.).

I have an 1/8 inch cable extension (probably 6'. I've never measured it, but it's sufficiently long) for my kick pedal so I can reverse it. This sits pretty much next to the stool on the left with my toes at the base and my heel at the top of the pedal. This arrangement is much more comfortable for me, in terms of using the kick pedal, as it doesn't use my ankle (no sore ankles!) but rather my whole leg.

The only thing I consistently have a problem with is what the heck to do with my right leg. Sometimes it's just fine straight ahead, but for some songs, especially the green-heavy ones, I need to move it off to the right to avoid it getting in the way.

Definitely no pro-drummer here, but it's been pretty cool seeing my skill increase drastically over the last two weeks. Never tried drumming before then, and I'm now up to tier 4 on expert (darn you, The Hand that Feeds!), plus a few random ones from later tiers, and can do all but four songs on hard.
