Upcoming MMORPG Stargate Worlds has seemed to fall into a development limbo, eerily reminiscent of the previous attempt at expanding the franchise into the video game format. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_SG-1_(game))
While not officially canceled, the developer recently experienced quite a few financial difficulties and is now being sued by one of the investment companies for outstanding payments. The studio, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, also went several months without paying their employees in an attempt to stave off the inevitable and attempt to get the game on the shelf to provide some income.
Stargate Executive Producer Brad Wright stated "It’s a shame. If it doesn’t happen — and, let’s be honest, it should be happening now if it was happening. It’s a shame. It’s a terrible shame."

I now feel like my spouse just bludgeoned my first-born child right in front of me after reading this sad bit of information.
I've been waiting for a Stargate MMO for a long time.

Officially it's still on, but it doesn't look good.

I don't know... at one point I would have killed for a Stargate game... now I'm not sure if there's any reason to make one.
You either have to set the game in a specific point in time that we've already seen in the show... or you end up just making crap up for the game. All the major enemies have been taken care of, haven't they?
I don't really think the Stargate universe works very well for an MMORPG anyway. There aren't exactly a lot of SG teams running around the galaxy, and I doubt that most people would really want to play as a random Jaffa.

The original Stargate movie was godly. Everything that came after just undermined the film and bastardized all of its redeeming quality.

I really liked the plotline they had for the FPS that was supposed to come out on the Xbox/PS2 a while back. Pity that never came through.
Anywho, I used to think the same thing about the rigid plotline, but I started picking up the SG-1 novels and was thoroughly impressed with the kinds of stories they could drop in between episodes without breaking continuity. The universe does lend itself well to spontaneous story development, given the complete randomness of whatever you can find just dialing the 'gate. With the show finished, any future games can just be dropped in after the end of SG-1. Heck, they could start a whole new story arc with video games that continues the SG-1 Saga after the end of Continuum and Atlantis.

Update: Cheyenne Mountain says "Don't count us out yet!"
After Stargate Producer Brad Wright's publicly announced disappointment in the status of the game, Cheyenne Mountain representatives were quick to come out and reinforce that they are still working on the game. The financial troubles have slowed them down, but not stopped work on the game. While they've cut back on publicity (both to save money and to avoid negative press regarding their financial difficulties), they have trailers and screenshots ready to go when they "relaunch" their publicity department.
“We’ve got a great group of developers here that are absolutely committed to building the highest quality MMO based on the Stargate franchise,” the studio said. “For these guys this is their heart and soul. That’s what they are putting into this game. We’re doing it for the fans of the series, we’re doing it for fans of MMOs, we’re doing it for gamers.
“And we’re still working here. No matter what the news is that’s going around out there, we’re still working. The game is going to get done. And you will like it!”

I strongly disagree.
Sucks if the game doesn't happen, I've never played PC-based games, but I was actually considering this.

you actually think the show was good? That show had terrible writing and completely deviated away from the movie's original premise.

It's one of my favourites, I seen the show first so I grew quite attached to it's version of events, I think it just took the movie's premise to it's logical extreme. I respect your opinion though.

Oh God, a different opinion! AHHHHHH!
If some people didn't like it, do you think the show would have lasted ten years and spawned two spin-offs and three DVD movies?

No, you're just coming into a thread about a game based on a show you don't even like and act surprised when someone else in the thread disagrees with you. :p
(See where I'm going with this?)

ya into an argument. Sorry i wasn't aware that discussing difference of opinions was frowned upon. Sorry to have upset the natural order of rb.com/forums. I'll get back in line. Moo.

I never said you weren't entitled to your opinion, simply pointing out that everyone else is too. :)
