View Full Version : PS3 Hard Drive Replacement After Rock Band

So, I bought a 60 GB PS3 at launch. I had re-partitioned it to run linux. That ended up being pretty useless, so I was planning on reformatting the drive and/or installing a larger drive. Now, I can't. My rock band save file cannot be copied or moved from the hard drive. WTF. This is so stupid. There is nothing copyrighted in there, it's just characters and progress, why can't I copy it HMX?

did you try the complete back up, or just try to copy files individually?
if the back up didnt work that sucks. i was afraid that would happen. i know eventually i'll swap in a 250gb drive, but i dont want to have to pass everything all over again

I am waiting for my buddy to bring over his external HDD so I can run the backup utility. Once that happens, I'll update this topic to let you know if it works. I tried to just copy my save to a memory stick, but that is not allowed.
I already got my 250gb drive, but I dread having to start everything over from scratch.
Can we please have an official word on this??

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that when you run the backup, it skips any locked files.

I'm almost 100% certain that a full backup is exactly that - a 100% full backup of everything. I would be greatly surprised if you lost anything at all.
You might have a better time getting an official response from Sony's Playstation boards, since the backup utility is Sony's area of expertise, not theirs.
[edit] Also, you can always re-download anything you've bought from the playstation store, so you don't need to worry about losing anything permanently anyway.

I'm not long until I get a bigger drive too, so I'd like to know this one as well.
Nate... You may be right about the backup util, but Sony didn't lock the game save EA/HMX did. They probably think they have good reasons to do so, but in the end it's just a great big pain in the butt for everyone. There were a few PS2 games that did that to me when I wanted to copy them off of a flaky memory card. I lost those games shortly thereafter and never picked them up again because I wasn't about to go through the whole game again.

I'm really really surprised that the game saves can't be backed up. What's the use in even *having* the damn things? Losing DLC I could kinda see... RIAA and copyright and all that BS, and you can always re-download it, but come on.... your band's progress? Your drummer's hairdo?
It's ridiculous.
