View Full Version : Convince my dad to let me see Metallica

Hello all.
Metallica is coming to my area later this year, and I would really like to go see them, but when I asked my dad all he had for me was an outright no. He says he is uncomfortable with the influence of heavy metal band and the people they attract, and he doesn't want me in with that crowd at the concert. I need some supporting and well thought out arguments (ie no insults), and I was wondering if you guys could help.

Thanks!

Compared to how they sounded when they started out, Metallica's more like a smooth jazz band now. You're probably more likely to find serious debauchery at a Miley Cyrus concert.

How old are you? If you're under, say, 15, then I can see his reasoning. All the Metallica fans I know (IRL) are *******s, and I've heard that their shows aren't really appropriate for the younger crowd. But if you're 15 or older, tell him to **** off and go to whatever shows you want to go to.

Most concertgoers are either nice enough people or keep to themselves. There are obviously going to be some nutshïts out there, but you can say that about any concert. Hell, considering that I mostly go to metal concerts, it would be surprising to some that the most annoying people I've had to deal with were at a Blue Öyster Cult show.

Most likely a group of 4 or so friends, all my age. We'll probably have to get a parent to drive us, so that and my having to charge it to his credit card and pay him back is the problem I'm running into.

Tell him to buy you seats that are a little higher up so you won't be near the pit.

Tell him you don't want to go, because it's "old people music" and start making fun of bands that were popular when he was a kid. Eventually, he'll want to "show you the light" and will take you. You have to convince HIM to go. It's not like you'll lose cred with your friends for going to a concert with your dad, because everyone else's dad will be there too.

In other words, Metallica is old people music.

Dude, my high school Spanish teacher, who was a woman who looked like a fully grown version of Dora the Explorer, loves Metallica and went to their shows religiously.
Clearly it's not as crazy a place as your dad might think.

Metallica's lyrics are pretty tame. I don't understand why it would be a problem.

Very true. Metallica is highly accessible and super-popular; even "normal" people who don't like metal or hard rock seem to enjoy their music. I mean, they are the 19th best selling artist of all-time according to the RIAA: http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?table=tblTopArt

On the other hand, I find that increase in popularity shares a direct relationship with the number asshöle fans. It's still usually not too bad, though, and Im guessing the fanbase is a bit more tame, if more jerkish as well.

This. I've been to many Buffett concerts. After he had that hit with Alan Jackson the crowd changed and not for the better.

Most people don't get the lyrics and assume they're bad. For example, I still come across people who think that Master of Puppets is PRO-Alcohol. And Slayer's Angel of Death is glorifying the concentration camps.

Thanks for all the help. I should have some good arguments for the next time I plan on bringing it up :D

That's the same issue I have. His only exprerience with Metallica is the few song snippets I've shown him. He just goes ahead and assumes that it's all "DEATHDRUGSSEX." Man, it's frustrating.

And Metallica (The Black Album) is the most succesful Metal album ever. (http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?table=tblTop100) (Unless you want to concider Appetite For Destruction and Back in Black Metal)

I haven't seen Metallica, but most of the metal crowds I've encountered (Iron Maiden, Clutch, The Sword, etc.) have been very nice, well-tempered, cool people. The only show that I've encountered creeps was at a Job for a Cowboy show, which is completely understandable considering the openers and what JFAC's early material was like.

I would just show him "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey". I think that'll help you out.

What a coincidence! I just got tickets to see 'Tallica! My parents had the same first response but today they finally gave in, on the day the tickets went on sale. Four minutes after they went on sale, all that was left was balcony seats. So, sorry to say but, unless you live in an area where the tickets go on sale on the 11th, they're probably already sold out. My mom was convinced by a lot of things... She did research and found Metallica's concerts are perfectly safe. Also, I did really good on the SAT test so... it was a gift. But the catch is that my dad and grandpa are coming with me.

Just let them listen to Metallica's wussy songs like Nothing Else Matters. They'll give in.

Metallica concerts are way cookies and milk compared to how your dad thinks about them.just show him how tame the floors are in a video on youtube and show him how fun they can be,and how you can come home bruise free!

Tell him that all four members of Metallica are dads themselves and even tell him you'd like for him to go. I just went to a show in Los Angeles and though the music was heavy and all that, it was hardly a "Scary" atmosphere. I didn't get any negative or hostile vibes from anyone there, everyone's just there to celebrate rock n roll and heavy metal and have a good time. It's a concert, not a prison rape.

Pring out some lyrics (just make sure they aren't Damage Inc., Dyers Eye, Leper Messiah, ...And Justice for All, etc.). Most of their songs aren't bad at all.

I live about an hour from Cleveland, and the local Cleveland radio station played Metallica ALL ****ING DAY. God, that was annoying.

Also, just have your dad do some research or something. Don't let him base his opinions on 30 seconds of 3 songs or whatever it was you showed him. Ultimately, based on your age, it IS his decision. Just don't let him make it unfairly.

Does anything pre-Black Album get radio play, other than Fade to Black?

The local station's actually really good about playing songs all throughout their career. Even in general, you hear stuff like Welcome Home, Hit the Lights, Blackened, Ride the Lightning, Seek & Destroy, Master of Puppets, etc.

But when I say all day, I mean ALL DAY.

It was non-stop Metallica for, well, me and her started running errands at noon, and we were making Rice Krispie Treats at 11:30 that night, and they were playing Metallica at ANY point we tuned in. Because Rock n Roll HOF = Cleveland, and Metallica is selling for them, it was some stupid Metallica marathon.

I think every Metallica song ever got played, along with a couple live versions.

Unless your dad is Doctor Emmett Brown, you have a DeLorean and a Mr. Fusion... he's probably right to say no, even if his reasoning is completely wrong.

Durring the Mandatory Metallica segment, the station will play just about anything they ever did.

I hear "One" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" fairly frequently on a local "Alternative" station.

I don't know, at 16 my parents let me go alone. Mostly because they didn't want to lose their hearing in the concerts, though, haha.
