Harmonix,
First of all, thanks for the amazing game. Since November 20 a few people have asked me if my wife and I are screening calls; we are not. We just have Rock Band cranked so loud on the surround sound that we cannot hear the phone ring!
My question is whether you have any plans to use live, commercially released albums for future DLC? For example, The Rolling Stones "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" and The Who's "Live At Leeds" albums. Since these are official shows I would think that record companies would allow you to use them.
One of the great things about rock is the spontaneity and improvisation that you hear at live shows. Since in Rock Band your perfomances are live gigs, I think this would work well.
Rock Band community, if you agree, let Harmonix know so that they will look into it.

This would be practically impossible.
On a live recording, the audio is captured in 2 to 5 channels, with all the parts "mixed."
To make it into the game, they have to have the tracks recorded seperately. For example, the guitar has to be isolated, as well as the bass, vocals, and each hand of the drummer for the most part.
A live recording would be really awesome, but not very practical.

The crowd noise and singalongs have been added to simulate a live set. I hope this doesn't get ignored on future DLC.

I know that is supposedly why that other inferior guitar game only had a 1 player version of "Paint It Black."
I'm hoping that someone at Harmonix will respond to the possibility of this being done. I don't know a lot about how audio is captured at live shows, but I do know that it is often heavily touched up in the studio before it is commercially released. Maybe that would make a difference?
And maybe it would be possible on a multi-track recording of a live show?

Yeah it would be awesome, especially for some of the Greatful Dead stuff!! But, I thought this right away too. If it is possible though, I'm sure they've looked at it.

I'd like Lightning Crashes, I Alone, and Selling the Drama as a DLC pack.
Or did I misinterpret the thread title again...?

It's remotely possible. ;)

i personally think it would work...but as cover songs........ to record the instruments live but separate...vocals live but separate... in an auditorium as opposed of a studio and put em all together..

It would be possible in the case of a live show that had a multitrack recording (not terribly common and doesn't really exist for most live recordings from the 60's and 70's). To make our game we need the vocal track, bass track, guitar track, and drum track separated out (and the drum tack needs to be separated out with it's individual parts.)
So possible? Yes. Likely? Never say never but probably not for a lot of older live recordings.

I can't speak for other albums, but I'm pretty sure that Live at Leeds was a multitrack recording, so yes, it should be possible to put it in the game.

It would be awesome, but I doubt it. I would absolutely love to sing some songs from Nirvana Live in New York.

Most recent live recordings are multitrack, AFAIK. I'm pretty sure Live In New York would be as it was recorded for TV.

I wonder if the Bob Marley live recordings are multitrack recorded. That would be awesome..!!

HMXSean,
I have a multi-track version of Led Zeppelin at Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Let's load it up!

It's becoming more and more common that if a performance is going to be live with the intention of mass release, they will record separate tracks for each instrument and do final mixes in post-production while maintaining another feed for the live submix. Unfortunately, though with live performances, you do get all the gory details such as mistakes miscues and not so perfect intonation on the instruments....but I'm certain nowadays there's always the option for the musician to go back into the studio to 'retrack' his/her part. (listen to John Mayer's commentary on his Any Given Thursday performance, the studio engineers asked him if wanted to do this for some songs)
IN addition, how cool would it be if a band did take previously live recordings and only kept parts of a mix and rerecorded the rest exclusively for Rock Band. Now record companies have an additional way to address their fears of going bankrupt when they thought the evil mp3 was sucking 'their' dollars away.

Cool idea, this is probably the one rhythm game were live concert recordings would make total sense. Kinda drawing a blank on songs for some reason but obviously anything from the real woodstock or the 94 one would be pretty cool.

even though i'm sick of nirvana after playing it on every random song list the first night i played, instead of the nevermind album i'd love to play the MTV unplugged nirvana album.

How about some Europe 72 by the Grateful Dead, that would be perfect.

the only thing i want is Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain on the dicks picks 29 album that would make this game the best game ever (as if it isnt already). but any Grateful Dead live album would be fantastic just because of the long soulful jams.
