Nope, not misleading you with the title, I am considering taking a break from my band/drumming to go to college. I was talking to my girlfriend and she asked if I was ever going to go to college and I answered "Probably not, I just don't have time with my job and band." She replied with "Oh, well, that makes sense then." But the more I think about it, the more I really want to go and study to be something where I will actually make a living with money and be able to support a family, which I want to have.
I mean, sure I love drumming and all, its my life, and it is what I am best at, but sometimes I just feel like I am going in a circle and not accomplishing anything with it. I have been in my current band for almost three years now... and we have only done 3 shows!!!! I mean, we do have some out of state shows booked for summer, but I think I may give them the notice that after our August run I am going to take a leave and do something else.
Does this sound reasonable? I really don't want to quit, but at the same time I feel that I just need to go and find a way to make myself a little more confident with my goals in life, other then rock. Sure, bands can make money off of being big... but not so much in the Black Metal scene.
And no, this isn't mainly about money, but just about being able to have more goals and feel good about what I do, because like I said, I honestly feel like I haven't moved anywhere in my life since I started to really be into being in a band, it has just taken for ever, and I don't have the passion I used to have for it because of the annoyance of waiting for things to happen.
Anyway... just kinda ranting about that.

I believe the solution here is to sell out and become Nickelback wannabes. That way you get money and music! Horrible, horrible music, but still music.

I think if you wanna go to college, than you should. But, based on what you're saying, it sounds like drumming is pretty much your life, and if at all possible, you should probably find a way to fit that into things. I don't know what you plan on going to college for or anything, and I haven't quite thrust out into the real world just yet, but I know that I personally would go crazy if I wasn't doing at least something involving music, and I get the impression that you might be the same way.

Yeah, drumming is pretty much my life, and I really hope that I can work it into going to school, but I really feel that I just want to focus on one thing at a time.
As for what I am interested in, I am unsure on what I EXACTLY want to do, but back in high school I took a "Psychology" class, and although my teacher was very boring and didn't teach us much, it left me wanting to know more because this kind of thing of study is very interesting.
Basically I am just looking back and seeing what classes I took, and seeing if any of those stood out to me. As of right now, off the top of my head, I can say that the top three classes I was interested in were Psychology, Creative Writing, and Video Production. But I am not going to jump right into things and quit my band tomorrow, I just want to start looking into stuff to see what to do... but honestly, taking a break from music to continue my education and hopefully finding a better career than rocking and working retail is well worth it.

Well if you go to school close to home then you can still drum. But if not you allways have RB to hold you over till you get back to your kit. Also if you have to move far from your band then bring your kit with you cause you never know who you will meet in college. I was in the same situation as you were, and I found it wasnt hard to focus on my band and school at the same time.
If you love drumming so much you should think about going to a performance arts school for drumming and try to become a studio musician or something. I was considering that but decided to do something else. Or seing that you love music and all think about an audio technology school.

all im gonna say to this is that i pretty much gave up my music to get into the real world... and i have regretted it every day of my life since then.
