View Full Version : A strange, but awesome idea...

Me and my friend just got done playing Band World Tour for about 2-3 hours and we got the best idea. We are in high school and have to do a big science fair project and we don't know what to do yet, (teacher says we should, but nothing came to mind) and all of a sudden we came up with something about Rock Band. Our teacher said do a project that won't bore you or do something that you like to do.. and that gave me the idea... I like to play Rock Band, so I was thinking of questions about it and I've come up with several, while my friend came up with 1. His one: How many hours of Rock Band do you have to play before your eyesight gets all blurry? hahaha yeah i know... here are some of mine: How many days would it take to beat Band World Tour if you played 3 hours a day? or How many songs on expert on drums will you have to play until your leg is tired?
These ideas aren't as good as what I have in mind, so if anyone could help out and think of a good science fair question, reply to this thread...
I'm just trying to make our science project actually fun....

I think something like "How much your progress on drums playing sessions of 3 hours a day 5 days a week for X period of time" or something of the sort I mean in 3 days I got to hard and thats it I just progress to a certain point with the bass pedal so something like that should be fun.

can rock band teach you real drums?

How about inducing an audio lag and asking people to calibrate it. See how accurately people can synchronize their vision and hearing.
Alternatively, see how much lag you can put into the game before people notice it. See how much lag before people can no longer adjust and play properly.
You're welcome ;)

Is there any benefit/damage to playing a game such as RB

Not exactly but it sure helps with rythm and untie your hands and feet (sorry for my n00bness I realy dont know how that thing is called) if you start playing in easy and beat all songs then move to medium etc. you'll notice you get a better technique little by little by the time you get to expert you will have a very basic technique of the drums wich is cool so in a way it teachs drums.
Congratz on expert and well get someone that dont know how to play or try remembering whatever XD it was just my 2 cents I just hope that in a way I guide you to a better idea.

sensei, my friend sucks at drums, i might make him do it, he prolly would'nt want to though.... cuz he really does suck... hahaha its all good he makes up for it on guitar

Well I have another idea why dont you try the note charts and see how close they are to the real life counterparts? you need the real instruments but it could be a very nice and interesting idea Harmonix freaking rocks at that why dont you prove it? XD

Do a little study and have people take a rhythm test (such things exist online, just use Google to find one) and record their score. Then make them play RB for an hour or two (preferably on drums). After that, have them take the rhythm test online again, and compare the results between the two tests.

or to stick with true science, you could calculate how many calories of energy are burned playing the drums on hard or expert.
C Dress
12-04-2007, 10:53 AM
nice, but how would I find out how many calories I am losing?

research they way calories are burned and make estimates based off of the formulas to calculate something close. For extra credit, you could convert it over to however many degrees you could heat a gram of water up too and how many joules you created...

How about calculating the probability of you and your friend having sex with women while in high school, and do a comparison to that of everyone else. My hypothesis is that you and your friend have a 100% chance of having sex with each other, but not with a woman.

How about,
What is it about Rock Band that makes people want to play vs real instruments?
Tie it back to human behavior and a reward system. The longer the reward takes the less likely people are to do it.

I proved that there is a 100% chance that you are *****. That's what test results said, don't look at me.

ok how about this, you just play the game nonstop for the next week, and then just tell your teacher that was you project.
put some actual effort in
or you know, actually base it on science?

Iam just going to state this plain and simple ... YOU CANT DO A SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT ON THIS THEIR IS NO SCIENCE INVOLVED WHAT SO EVER

Here, I'll break it down simple for ya. I weigh 200 pounds. According to my personal trainer, I am 18% body fat. That means I am 164 pounds of muscle. I have to eat about 2300 calories a day to maintain body weight. To that conclusion, a person with my metabolism burns about 14 calories per pound of muscle. For a 10 minute jog, I burn about 120 calories. So translate that into an hour of play, I burn 120 calories per hour on the drums. Now the calories that we typically refer to are not real calories. They are actually 1000 times less. So with that fact, I could raise the temperature of water .12 degrees celsius.
Just replace my numbers with yours, fine tune the guesses with facts and I just did your feckin homework for ya.

See, reading your sig, I see you play on expert. Playing Blackened on the drums could be related to jogging as long as you videotape yourself as proof of the work put in.

If he plays blackened on expert for an hour, it may very well equal jogging for 10 minutes. It's high school, not college. Especially if it is public school. I did crap like this all the time. For a chemistry project, I had to make a cube that had the volume of a mole. To take it a step further and to make it more interesting, I made a cardboard banjo with the volume of a mole. Did he ask for cube? Yes. Did I give him a banjo? Yes. Did I get a 105? You bet.
Edit: according to his previous posts, he didn't know about that. He had a college kid give him the idea. He may get +10 for advanced learning.

Yeah, it don't have to have an experiment in it, technically, based on what the project is..

Just saying working out on rb then saying i learned you can work out playing rb yup that seems like a good grade to me i would go with a real experiment that is easy so you can get it done and go play rb some more cause i think that is the root of this whole thing

The point is not saying that you can work out on Rock Band. The point is demonstrating the amount of energy the human body can produce while doing tasks such as playing Rock Band. Well, I think if done right, it would get a solid A. Then again, I don't know the details of the project.

Im doing some thing about how the angle projectory of a missle effects the distance traveled and then relating the angle of enterance of the ground to the angle shot at... it basic but it'll get me an A

Here's a good idea. Test the effects of alcohol on the accuracy of Rock Band players.
I'm not kidding.
Have your parents invite some friends over (or anyone OVER 21 OR WHATEVER THE LEGAL DRINKING AGE IS), and teach them to play the game. Record their average performance.
Have them drink a glass of wine, play again, and record performance.
Repeat this 6 times in 3 hours, or whatever.
Results: drinking causes loss of fine motor coordination. However, it's also worth noting that drinking can also cause decrease social anxiety, etc (you'll probably notice singers are much less self-conscious). Spin this into why you shouldn't drink and drive, drink and operate heavy machinery, perform surgery, etc.
Caveats: Note that while drinking is decreasing performance, the increased playtime is good practice so the person will naturally get better.
There, I practically did your report for you. Let us know how it goes.

yes good idea i did something similar as a sophmore and won county prizes ... however you have to get special aproval to have actual human subjects ... i tried to use caffine and was not allowed so could only use time of day and awakeness to test reaction time

Who said they actually had to play? Give them a laggy setup, and put them into lag calibration. See how well they do against a measured latency. Graph the data points, do some statistics, and get an A.
Only tricky things are getting a laggy system, and knowing exactly how laggy. Do you have a stereo receiver with a configurable delay?
