I've heard a ton of people talk about how awesome this game is and I finally had a chance to play it. After about an hour of playing I was done with it. I'm sure there is some funny stuff you can do later on but I like my shooters with action and my rpg's with dragons and teammates, the 2 shouldn't mix imo. Guns can have a place in rpg's, I dunno what I'm tryin to say. But what makes fallout 3 so awesome?

I don't know if it will happen for you but when I played the first few hours I didn't think I liked the game and then it got great and I loved it.

Like most other Western RPGs, Fallout 3 is a bit to get into, but once the story starts to develop, you can't put it down. The world is HUGE and there are endless things to do. And let's not forget the Rock-It Launcher. That weapon alone makes this game worth while for me.
The Rock-It laucher is a weapon that will shoot whatever you put into it...here's a vid of me killing super mutants with .... well, you'll see.

An hour really isn't enough to get a decent impression of the game. I really should start playing it again... was loving it, but I barely have any time for a decent gaming session, and SFIV/RB2 are better suited for the little breaks I do have.

how long should I play before it gets good? Killing mutants with teddy bears doesn't really appeal to me, I know there is a ton of stuff to do, but what skills do you need to get up and what does that skill allow you to do?

I've played for at least 10 hours in (up to Rivet City) and I've kinda stopped having fun. I mean the dozens of crashes I've had have really made it suck but... eh. Might get back to it sometime.

What skills you need depends on what your play style is. The ones I used most are small arms, speech, lockpick and science, with some medicine and repair thrown in. Some people will want to go the sneak/melee route, though, or go for the bigger guns.
How far did you get in the first hour of play? Personally, I thought the game started to become a lot of fun as soon as I got out of the Vault and got my first quests in Megaton.

This.
You have to get out of Vault 101 first. After that, what you do... changes everything. lol
Right now i'm collecting all 20 bobbleheads. i have 9 left to go!!
then after that i have to hack 50 terminals and win 50 speech challenges. (the last 2 achievements in the game)

I made it to megaton I think, the city with the bomb and the children of atom or somethin like that but I couldn't disarm the bomb b/c of my explosives skills, only a few fights and tryin to find daddy.

i have no idea what the draw to Fallout 3 is. I felt the same way you did when i played it. It was just as annoying as Oblivion was/is. I despise FPS-RPG games.

I wouldn't consider Fo3 a shooter at all, mostly because of V.A.T.S.
Think of VATS as the attack menu box you would find in any RPG. Grab a shotgun. Run up to an enemy, target their head with VATS and watch their face explode.
Also, this game does feature teammates. You meet different NPCs throughout the game. Some of them will join your party depending on many different things. Sometimes it's as simple as just asking them to join you. Others you may have to pay, or win their respect.
What your post says to me is, more or less, "This game lacks certain cliches or features every other [RPG or Shooter] has and because of this I find it boring." Personally I welcome the change of pace. There are plenty of sword and sorcery RPGs, but how many post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland raider RPGs are there? Other than the previous Fallout titles... None I can think of.
The first two or three hours of the game are a little slow. But this is made up for in abundance during the next 90+ hours the game has to offer.
To start things off you have a MASSIVE map to explore. This map has tons of little nooks and crannies to get into, and is teaming with danger . You can spend hours exploring the ruins of Washington D.C. And by "exploring" I don't mean touring, I mean going inside buildings and finding treasure, meeting with survivors and going on quests, running from (or fighting) zombies, mutant bears, mutant ants, mutant mutants, etc. etc.
In addition to being an RPG, the game also has Survival and Horror elements to some degree. I played this game with my TV muted and with the lights on. Maybe I'm just a scaredy cat but this game is no joke.
I also enjoyed the setting. I love movies like Mad Max and The Postman. I found this game reminiscent of those movies.

Like I said above, the first hour or two aren't so amazing. Once you get out of the vault and discover civilization, things kind of pick up a bit. NPCs will give you missions or quests and the menu will tell you where you need to go or what you need to do, but most of it is up to you. Going out into the wasteland and wandering around, finding things, fighting things, this is probably half the game itself.
As far as skills go, Stealth is a good skill to have, but not too much. Stealth will allow you to sneak about and move around unnoticed, which is very useful in some situations.
Another very important skill is small guns. This covers any normal sized gun, and by that I mean the more practical kinds of guns. Something like a shotgun, a rifle, or pistol. Things like rocket launchers and flame throwers fall under the big gun category. Those are heavy, highly impractical in most situations (though useful to have in some) and the ammo isn't easy to come by. If your small guns skill is high you can blow a super mutant's head off in one or two blasts with a combat shotgun, which is my favorite gun in the game. It's very powerful, useful and pretty common. You'll be able to find a lot of them which means you'll be able keep them in good condition.
You also want to either be able to hack computer, pick locks, or have a high speech skill. I was annoyed by the lock picking and computer hacking mini-games. I stuck with lock picking and found myself picking a lot of locks. A lot. Next to ammo and stimpacks bobby pins were like gold to me.
I should have a lot more to contribute but I've already made a huge wall of text and I'm REALLY tired. All of this is purely on memory too, I haven't been able to play the game in a month or three because my xbox is dead. If you don't like the game I can't make you like it, and I'm not trying to, but I do suggest you give it a try. The game is an experience well worth playing through, and the story is pretty good, it kept my interest. Which says a lot because my attention span is tiny.
At first I hadn't even payed the game any mind at all, I was completely oblivious. I got a phone call from my best friend saying "DUDE DON'T ASK ANY QUESTIONS GO OUT RIGHT NOW AND BUY FALLOUT 3 BYE *click*" I went and got it and played it, and didn't regret it. In fact I loved it.

My tastes are very different then, I guess. I enjoyed Oblivion as well when I played it on my horribly underpowered PC when it just came out. Amazon UK is selling the Game of the Year edition for the PS3 for about 20 dollars now, so I'm tempted to pick it up.

I will admit it does take a little while to get "Into" the game. Starting out with nothing, no ammo, no guns, no money... i mean caps., no aid. It takes a while to build up.
But after you've played it for so long. When you get to level 20... hopefully by that time you have tons of weapons (even some unique weapons) ammo, aid, and caps. Nothing stands in your way. Especially when you have Fawkes on your side. She tears the s*** up!!

I kinda liked oblivion for a while, but after playing mmorpg's like everquest, wow and guildwars it just feels like it was missing something (other people), exploring is alot more fun with a friend.

Guns can have a place in rpg's, I dunno what I'm tryin to say. But what makes fallout 3 so awesome?
I played the entire game and found it entirely flat. The enemies lack variety, combat is WAY too easy past level...I dunno, 10 or so, VATS combat is insanely slow, the landscape is mostly dead and the radio station only plays 10 songs.
The storyline is also weak - never at any point in the game did I give a toss about the mute main character, his idiotic father or any of the lifeless quest husks wandering around aimlessly. Everything just felt like a time sink.
The world is incredibly detailed, but the combat is so terrible that I never wanted to explore it, lest I get sucked into a 17 hour long VATS sequence or have to ape around sluggish controls. If they're going to make an FPS RPG, it should feel like an FPS, damnit.
The game is also buggy...good sweet Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the ****ing donkey in heaven with our Lord God almighty the amount of bugs in Fallout 3 literally made me want to tear out my eyes and use them to perform a colonoscopy on the game devs while beating them to death with their own severed limbs.
Characters got stuck in the geometry, quests got bugged, the game crashed constantly, the ****ing RADIO STATION even got bugged!
THE DOG WAS BUGGED. THE DOG. WAS. BUGGY. THEY COULDN'T EVEN MAKE A DOG RIGHT.
And the ending...My God, the one reason I stuck with this game was to see the ending, only to find out it was pointless - no matter what you did, you died in a radioactive room.
Let's see - I have
A) A super mutant partner that is immune to radiation
B) A Ghoul slave that was forced to obey me and is also immune to radiation
Neither would go inside, giving the excuse that they didn't want to rob me of my 'destiny'....which was to die....in a radioactive room.
Really.
So, why did I play the game to completion if I thought it sucked? The easy answer is that I had no idea the game was about to end. I thought it was just beginning. I had just gotten some neat weapons and noticed a teeny tiny bump in difficulty and had said "oh ok, this is starting to pick up! Let's see, for this next mission I have to activate this giant communist hating robot; I'm probably about halfway done with the game..."
Now, with mods you can increase the difficulty, increase the spawns, add weaponry and add music, but why should you have to turn to user created modifications to make a crappy game slightly less awful?
And the first expansion pack I stole from the intertubes sheerly out of spite, as a way of sticking my middle finger up at Bethesda....
....the final mission was bugged. The stereotypical Chinese general would not die and could not move. Oh wait, neither could I!
I also had a difficult time figuring how removing the radio (which I had just added 500 license free songs from the 1940s to), removing your companions, removing your ****ty ****ing bugged dog, removing your levels, armor, tradeskills and items to complete an entirely irrelevant mission in a virtual reality chamber was supposed to ADD to the game.
I can't even force myself to download the second expansion pack...I won't even download it for free.
But, in typical Bethesda fashion, it was incredibly bugged when first released, with corrupt textures, new crashes and other various bugs and glitches. Ho ho ho, who wasn't surprised by this?

With online capabilities like XBL and PSN I think MOST games would be more fun with co-op or online multiplayer.

To be honest, I'm happier with a good single player game. Too many RPG's these days go the MMORPG route. Now there are plenty of games and game types that I love to play with others, but RPG's really aren't one of those. I prefer exploring at my own pace without having to worry about other people.

I understand. But it wouldn't be like that. The second person could be there just to be there. He/She doesn't affect your storyline or anything.

I dunno, if not for other people I wouldn't have enjoyed the mmorpgs I did play nearly as much, I mean people's stupidity is amazing in these games, especially when you can tell a player bought the level 60 character they are using, and when you have a guild together pull off an insanely tough raid (for me it was the Wraith encounter in everquest PoP exp) it's just a very rewarding feeling. I do enjoy single player rpg's as well, final fantasy series, kingdom hearts even, and a few others that are skipping my mind atm, but Oblivion and Morrowind to me felt like everquest without the otherplayers, cutscenes are a great way to add to the story, and those games lack that, and to me that's kinda what fallout 3 feels like.

There are two things that keep me from enjoying MMORPGs:
- I'm not much of a team player by nature.
- any computer RPG pales in comparison to a good tabletop RPG with friends or a good LARP.
I can appreciate single player computer RPGs for what they are, and enjoy them if they have an immersive world, good storyline or preferably both (Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment would be good examples of the latter), but multiplayer RPGs like MMO's seem to me like a combination of the worst aspects of computer and tabletop RPGs.

Terrific game. Unfortunately I downloaded the Anchorage pack and got involved in that, and, well, it's a snooze. Trying to add a WW2 shooter into the game isn't really working. Once I finish the Anchorage sim, I'm sure I'll be heavy back into it.

Basically I agree. The game is too easy, the story is too short, and the writing is too poor for this game to be good. The first and third things I was kind of expecting because they were also present in Oblivion. The second may have been too, I could never stand to play Oblivion long enough to go through the main quest. Sadly it is starting to seem like Morrowind may be the last Bethesda game I ever really enjoy. A huge world with tons of places to explore... it definitely is that, but what is the point of exploring those places? Once you have seen a half a dozen of them you have seen what most of them look like, any future building raiding will just be killing the same monsters to get the same mostly pointless loot over and over. I can not speak on the bugs however, as except for a few texture glitches here and there I really did not experience any of them.
Also, dude the ending was total BS, you definitely nailed that one on the head.

My first experience with Fallout was a negative one, and I got frustrated with it very quickly after feeling like the game was out to screw me at every turn (no ammo, puny guns, no money, no way to heal).
Then I started playing it more strategically rather that like a FPS and it started to click much better, and using the VATS system for aiming helped out quite a bit (even though it felt a lot like cheating at first). Now I'm much more fond of the game :)

all of the complaints leveled against FO 3 are pretty much my complaints against western RPGs. One dimensional characters, poorly paced stories, and a heavy emphasis on choice (which, for some reason, I never actually feel like I'm making any choice that matters).
All that aside, I did enjoy FO 3 as a game. Just not as an RPG
