You're a big step ahead of the rest of the 17 year olds. I'm 17 and can't really do either one. Without my mom. :)

Not at all. I could do that at 17 as well. Then again, I was in college and living on my own in a city over a 100 miles away from my parents at that age, so I pretty much had to be able to do all that. :D

I'm a 17 year old girl and I cannot do either.
I was going to say something, but it would've sounded slightly terrifying.

Congratulations you fit into the lesser amount of American society where you take life into your own hands, when content in mediocrity is not acceptable...
Give yourself a round of applause
(17, thinking of my future, how I will move to Japan. I currently spend 5/7 days at home alone, make dinner, do laundry, dishes etc.)

I do my laundry at 14, but don't really "make" dinner. I can heat frozen pizzas and mini tacos, though.

I still don't know how to do the laundry. And the microwave is my best friend.

I still live with my dad at this very time. Since the working world SUCKS right now. I cannot get a job here.

Yes, it is weird and abnormal and you should be ashamed of yourself, because it is bad. So bad that there may even be prison time and I will have to check with my sources in the FBI to find out the exact length and if there is a chance of a plea bargain or work release program.
Children, this is what's wrong with society and the next generation. Teenagers actually need confirmation or justification for having the ability to pour in a capful of detergent and pushing a few buttons on a great mysterious machine used to wash clothes and for having the ability to learn how not to starve to death AFTER SEVENTEEN YEARS OF LIFE ON THE PLANET EARTH.
It only took him SEVENTEEN YEARS to figure out how to make and eat food and keep from smelling like a pubescent barn......and he's actually AHEAD of the curve.
God forbid that civilization should one day spontaneously collapse. Within a week, something like 100 million americans will have died of starvation after fruitlessly pushing buttons on a microwave with no electricity.
Imagine having to hunt for meat, forage for fruits and grow your own crops. Children once did this at age 10, while still learning to read and write.
Now we seek praise for pushing buttons and figuring out how to open childproof containers, while our written language devolves into writing misspelled text messages like 'HOW R U LOL' on a telephone....A TELEPHONE.

I will reply to your comment using the second to last sentence from your reply: ......next time learn something about the person you are talking about before you write something about them......
I made my first meal, a proper sandwich of turkey, cheese and mayonnaise on white bread at age five.
I caught my first fish, a small sunfish 4 inches in length at Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin, using a homemade fishing rod made from a toy bow and arrow set purchased the previous month at Shopko, a discarded hook, a wine cork as a bobber, a length of pink yarn and a large worm caught after a rainstorm....at age six.
I did my first load of laundry at age nine.
I could have asked my mother to do all these things for me (with the exception of the fish), but I figured "I have two hands, why not figure out how to do it myself?"
To this day it doesn't really feel like any of the above is very remarkable and really wasn't at the time - children were just smarter than they are now.

I agree with deacon. It is sad that it is abnormal for the OP to be able to do the things he can, but even more sad that he feels the need for some sort of recognition/attention/ego stroking for being able to do the very basics of self-reliance.
<long, sarcastic, and ultimately pointless (because it would fall on deaf ears) thread deleted>

I still don't know how to do the laundry. And the microwave is my best friend.
Sort it out between whites and colors. Throw one of the bunches in washing machine. Put in detergent. Turn it on. When done, throw in dryer with a dryer sheet.
There you go. Not hard. :) I way prefer laundry over other things, like doing dishes or cleaning the toilet.

Cooking and cleaning are incredibly useful skills to have once you get out on your own. Don't think for a minute that something else like would be a better life skill, haha
