View Full Version : USB Hub and Red Ring of Death?

I went to power up my 360 today and was greeted by the infamous red ring. Disappointed, I immediately went to warranty the console back to MS. Now, that done, I started taking the peripherals off of it, one by one, turning it on in-between, thinking maybe that it was just a hardware issue with a momentary power outage (like we sometimes get here) or something. I noticed that sometimes it would boot halfway through the intro-screen, but freeze prior to loading the dashboard. Other times it was the red ring. So, continuing this process, it suddenly boots normally into the dashboard. I look down in my hand and the last thing I'd unplugged was the USB hub with the three Rock Band instruments plugged into it.

So taking this as a clue, I start trying to isolate the issue. I plug the USB hub back into the console, and the dashboard freezes. I restart and am greeted again by the red ring. I unplug the hub, and again it boots fine. I plug in the instruments individually, and it boots fine. I plug the hub in with any instruments attached, and I get a frozen console followed by a red ring on reboot. I get the same result when plugging the bug in with no instruments attached to it. These results follow for all three USB ports.

Very strange, I think. It seems the USB hub is the culprit. I'm going to continue the warranty process with MS, since I have a console susceptible to Red Ring anyway, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this.

Update: Just substituted a spare USB hub I had lying around. Works perfectly with the system. My RB USB hub really is malfunctioning in a very bad way. Very weird.

it was most likely the 4 quartile red ring meaning something is not hooked in right and is usually easily fixed, a usb hub thats defective could do this. If it was 3 quartile, it wouldnt recover. You can getr a red right by turning on the system without an a/v cable plugged into the back of the syustem

Nope it was the 3 red lights, from 3:00 to 12:00 position, like:

Yes, the power adaptor is plugged in. Was unplugged, replugged at both ends. This is a hub that was working last night. I got the rings before I updated the dashboard. To recheck I also connected it after the update, same result.

3 Red Lights just means General Hardware Failure, so you could get a temporary condition with a bad external app. (I heard some people were getting this with the SceneIt IR receiver as well.)

I'd send the hub back under the replacement plan. (And thanks for reminding me that I need to check mine before the warranty is up...)

Well, I've got a spare hub that's much better ( longer cords, etc. ), so I don't think I'm even gonna bother getting it warrantied, that original hub was...er...substandard, to say the least.

Yeah, that thing was the cheapest of the cheap, like most of the hardware. Whenever possible I don't even use it. I can plug in guitar, drums and use my wireless LP with no problems.

Hey hunter, my xbox 360 is now shot (thankgod i bought an extra warranty), but since Rockband - which is still a great game, my xbox started to freeze etc...just like ur symptoms. Anyways, my 360 now freezes at the startup screen on it's own without the usb in... So after I get my 360 replaced, you said using a better usb hub will fix future issues?

Well the cause of my issues was the USB hub, it worked with no hub plugged in, and wouldn't work with the hub attached. Yours sounds like a different issue since it doesn't work either way.

I doubt the hub is the cause, xbox's die..get a replacement..

Well I thought it was just my xbox in the begining, but then I lent Rockband to my brother so he started getting freezing problems & 3 red rings, via this forum i told him to use another hub & he has no more freezing problems for now. But ya I think my 360 is getting worn out anyways, so I did send it in for a replacement

Ahh the joy of having roommates.
I've had plenty of
pride roommate (http://coomahalig.info/pride-roommate.htm). From living with a stripper, to living with an alcoholic and a pot head, to living with another alcoholic and a coworker. For instance, the other day I came home to find the sliding door cracked open, beer cans all over the kitchen counter, and one of the chairs flipped upside down, leaning against the couch. It was like the Hulk had come through and had a party.
So I wanna know, what stories do you have of past and present
roommate problem (http://coomahalig.info/roommate-problem.htm)?
tl;dr HULK SMASH!
