View Full Version : Harmonix Songs...

I don't know if this opinion is widespread or not, but I'm getting sick of playing the Harmonix-based-group songs. Of the last 7 or 8 songs I've played on ranked score duel, 4 of them have been Harmonix songs. Now I'm not accusing HMX of givings the songs a higher chance to be played, because I honestly don't think HMX would do that, but...these songs are really bad.

I understand from being in a serious non-high-school band for a number of years that promotion is a big deal, and it's hard to get your name out there...but these songs are REALLY bad. A couple of them aren't terrible, but the Honest Bob, Vagiant, and Acro-brats songs in particular are so unlistenable I will occasionally quit out of a ranked match just to avoid listening to them. It's not just that I dislike the genre or dislike them because other people liek them or anything - these songs are just not good. They're derivative, boring to listen to, the vocals are a bit hard to take, and, most importantly, they are not fun to play.

Again, I can kind of understand why you put these in the game (although there are hundreds of other bands out there that most anyone else would rather see), but can you PLEASE take them out of random ranked games? Just the fact that there's like a 15% chance or something to play one randomly makes me far far less interested in even playing ranked matches.

Cry more.

Maybe your taste in music just sucks? I think the Honest Bob song is a blast to play.

If you have the talent and put the sweat and tears into creating an experience like Rock Band, you have the right to include any damn song you want in the game. Be thankful they didn't offer up tracks to the highest bidder, we'd be screeching out to pop-rock.

^I concur, ESPECIALLY with the Honest Bob bit (I've been hoping for "I Get By" ever since the wait for GH II)

Anyways, bottom line: Who cares? Go cry me a river you ungrateful piece of trash.

Seven is really really bad, but I can get over it.

Everything else is pretty damn solid.

I really like the Vagiant and Acro-Brats songs.

Neither has come up when playing online though. I did get Time We Had which is a bit too mellow for my tastes but its still kind of fun to play.

This opinion is definitely not widespread.
Honest Bob is amazing.
Acro-Brats are great.
Not a big fan of Vagiant, lulz, but meh. ;)

I *Heart* Honest Bob. In fact, I dig most of the Harmonix tunes, so much so that I'd love a Harmonix Classix DLC pack ('Soy Bomb', 'Mr. Fix It', and perhaps some Freezepop. Come on, HMX, you know you want to.)

Chill out people. If this opinion WASN'T shared by many people these people would have record deals or something, but if HMX didn't exist I can promise you none of these bands would ever get signed to ANY sort of label because they simply aren't good enough.

Another issue with them, is no one knows these songs so no one wants to do the vocals. No one wants to play the instrumentals anyway though, because no one I know who I've showed this game to likes any of these songs. Additionally, I think anyone I've played on score duel who has a mic input pretty much seems to sigh on queue either before or after them.

Also, in preparation for responses to the getting signed comment, all good bands get offered a record contract with SOMEONE. It might not be one of the giant labels, but it will happen. Local bands that remain unsigned are not good, regardless of how rabid their ungrowing fanbase may be.

BTW, I'm not trying to be a troll or an uptight music junkie. Aside from fall out boy, I've actually become interested in a lot of songs/bands that I didn't like before. The main set list is great, but I do honestly feel the HMX songs make score duel less fun.

Its kind of weird but I prefer playing the "unknown" songs more than the regular set list and I think including "Im so sick" as a bonus track is wrong but its just me. Nothing wrong with the regular set list its awsome but it works more as the BTW or Solo tour than score duel, I know Dont Fear the Reaper from memory I dont have to look at the screen to play the guitar in expert but those weird forever-changing bonus songs are a lot more fun to paly against somebody.

Previous iterations of GH had songs that you didn't know, but grew on you over time. Not all of the bonus tracks are to my taste either, but I don't like metal either and I could still enjoy the later tiers of the GH games. Not every song will please everyone, but give them time and you might grow to at least not despise playing them. Hell, I can stand Dead on Arrival when I am playing the game, even though I can't bear to listen to it otherwise.

I agree with Catalytic here. I never would have heard Even Rats or FTK or Call out if I had not listened to and played the bonus content. Like most music and those who appreciate it, the opinions are going to vary.

The blanket inference that if they are any good they would have been signed by SOMEONE is not entirely fair, MrCreamyT. Several very good bands go for years w/o being noticed outside of the bar scene and the only way that they do get the "big break" is because of their "rabid followers."

Simple point being that you have your opinions and I have mine. I like many of the HMX songs and have albums from some of the bands. If you don't like them that's your right, but to just assume that none of them are worth it may be a bit narrow minded.

I am really hesitant to get involved in discussions of taste, since there can't be a single authority on this type of thing. But I guess I'll just weigh in as a person and not a moderator for this one:

What does having a record deal have to do with anything? The Honest Bob song is in my top 2-3 favorites in the game - the man in charge is one of our most senior programmers. Musicians don't have to have record deals to perform good music.

These days I tend to swing towards playing the bonus tracks more than the others =P

I know the record-deal argument sounds narrow-minded, but it's not really. There are very very very few bands who stay unsigned for more than a year and a half or so unless they are very obviously still maturing (and in 99% of those cases it's because they formed in high school and need a couple years to learn how to write/play in a band).

I'm sure the guy is a great programmer and works to make a great product, but he, along with a few other the HMX band songs, are not good songwriters. They CAN put together a song, but there is nothign creative or technical about them.

My roommates and I have had plnety of people over to play this game, and I can promise you we all have very different tastes in music. A lot of them don't like a lot of the stuff I like, which is why I thought maybe I was just being snobbish, but I've yet to find a single person who likes the Konks, Honest Bob, Vagiant, or the Acro-Brats.

Anyway I've just kind of stated my point over again, so I will stop responding to stuff in this thread.

Again, I don't mean personal offense to any HMX people, but when you put yourself in a huge forum you are subjecting yourself to the opinions of a LOT of people. It's like the ultimate caveat of mixing popularity, art, and business.
