View Full Version : Game Idea: Adlib mode for drums

Have you ever went to a concert and noticed the drummer isn't exactly playing what they did on the album? Probably cuz it's boring and damn near impossible to play exactly the same everytime. So my idea is along with having to play a specific set of notes, have a mode where you can adlib and play some different beats. It could be online only or for single player too. If the whole song would be too difficult, then possibly only adlib the fill areas. Fill areas being the sections of the song where the drummer breaks away from the normal beat of the song, in case you were wondering. The only reason I bring this up is that I am a drummer, and whereas I have a difficult time with the guitars on expert level, I think the drums may be a little easier for most people. This would just add a little extra creativity and individuality for the player to keep them entertained longer. Of course I'm not working on the game, and I don't know what to expect from the controller for this aspect, so it may be more difficult to play than I expect. I'm probably not the greatest at explaining this, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Maybe someone else could take my idea farther and branch out with it. SORRY for the long post.

It sounds like a great idea but I don't think it's going to happen

Like the guitars in guitar hero you are not actually playing them more like hitting the proper button at the proper time so that the song track continues to play correctly. Hit one wrong and you get the CLANK. I would think it will be the same thing on the drums, a controller pad rather than an actual drum machine.

Would be cool though...

Or just put Moby Dick in the game. Perfect.

I think it can be done.

The adlib feature was actually present
in Drummania the 7th for example. Basically you could disable an option
that counted it as an error if you hit any of the pieces before the
correct note hit the symbol at the bottom.

This way the player
was able to "fill-in" with some freestyle the parts where the drum was
supposed to stop playing (like a bridge for example).

I definitely think it would be cool if Harmonix implemented this option for the drums in RockBand.

This is a really cool idea. I think it could be done where certain measures of the song allow for improvisation and creative fills and you get more points for hitting more notes and/or a greater variety of notes (i.e. playing a combination of toms, snare, and bass would net you more points than just all snare). For most of the driving beat of the song, require the player to stick to the timing and correct notes, but allow for custom fills or maybe short solos. Like elliot said, the drummer often doesn't play the same thing twice, especially for particularly fast passages. I suppose some guitar solos are the same way, but GH didn't allow any deviation from the music. Would be cool, though.

Someone mentioned that since it is not actually a drum but just buttons you could not do this.

The thing about the drums is that, if they wanted to, they could make the drum basically a cheap electric drum kit.

I am thinking the drum controller is going to have to be a set of drum pads in some fashion. I hope so anyway. So if it more like an electronic kit than a plastic set of buttons, it will be successful. I really think it won't be disappointing.
