View Full Version : Notes easier or harder to hit?

I play GH3 and I am getting Rock Band game only for Christmas, and I was wondering is it easier or harder to hit rectangles for notes or circles like in Guitar Hero. It seems like it would be harder.

The shape doesn't technically have anything to do with it, but the timing window in RB is narrower than GH2 or GH3. But the rectangles do make it easier to see exactly *when* you need to strum. So there's less room for error, but the rectangles actually help with the timing.

its the same, the only thing that may be different is I heard that the Makers of Guitar Hero 3 actually made it easier to hit their notes, by making the game more forgiving. I also read that Rockband did NOT do that, so coming straight from GH3 to this may be a little transition, but after like the first song, you dont even notice that its rectangles and not circles.

IMO GH3 notes are easier to hit than GH2 notes, and Rock Band notes are a little harder than GH2, so I agree that you'll have a bit of a transition from GH3 to RB.

Why does the shape of the notes make it easier or harder? Do people actually keep their eyes where the circles/rectangles cross the line? I tend to look a bit higher up, at what's coming.

It's all about the window of time that the 2 games allow you to hit the note in. GH3 is extremely lenient. In Rock Band you have to be pretty precise. It really doesn't have anything to do with the shape.

RB notes much harder to hit b/c of way reduced timing window and awkward strum bar...but it's really a party game and not a big raging guitar challenge like GH is...if you just want to play guitar then I'd buy a GH game, but if you have even the slightest interest in playing with friends or playing drums, then definitely go with RB; all in all it's a far superior game.

Just hit the keys in time with the music and there won't be any problems. It seems to me like RB actually makes you anticipate the note a little bit like you're actually playing the instrument. You have to strum a real guitar before the sound comes out!!! Just the same, RB, IMO, has done this as well.

this I do see quite a bit in Rock Band with the hammer-ons and pull-offs which I use quite a bit in songs. In guitar hero I could nail them like crazy because of that extra window. In Rock band, that window is so small that you have to be spot on. Any error either way and your screwed for the whole phrase. It does make it more interesting, its just something I've noticed.

Rock Band has a much tighter timing window than Guitar Hero III. In GH3 you can just flail like crazy and breeze through the toughest spots, in RB you have to be precise or you will fail.
I found GGAHT on Expert in RB considerably more difficult than either Raining Blood or One on Expert in GH3.

I am not a GH player, but I did read in several different articles that GH 3 did have a broader window in wich to hit the notes than GH2, and that RB had a similar window as GH2, so it was a little less forgiving than GH3. I think it was a Gamepro preview a few months back, both for GH3 and RB in the same issue...

Yep, but you need to replace the word "little" with "lot"...I'm an expert guitar hero veteran and I have trouble on these songs because aparently I'm not right on the money all the time when it comes to precision. The regular chords and such are easy to hit, but when you get into solo territory where there are more HO/POs the timing window just destroys you...especially on repetitive riffs like in Sweet Leaf and Green Grass and High Tides. I hope they make the timing window larger in future installments.

I've told all my friends this before, but I've never posted it on the forums:
Rock Band is a rhythm game. You have to play with your ears.
Guitar Hero 3 is a video game. You have to play with your eyes.
And, if you have trouble with the HO/POs during solos, use the solo buttons!

I'm with you on the difficulty of doing repetitive parts, but I don't mind the challenge. I hope that they choose to leave the timing window the same size and continue to put out songs of similar note density. I think that GH3 suffers on the 'authenticity' exactly because of the timing window. They chose to put very challenging note charts, but rather than highlighting the difficulty of the original artists' work, they trivialize it by allowing very "sloppy" play.
It's very difficult to keep perfect timing on long repetitive stretches like in GGHT, and that's exactly why the original artist did it. It sounds great and it's very hard, they are in essence "showing off" their precision and internal timing. I'd rather struggle to keep up with the great guitar players of the last four decades than to have all of the most talented guitar soloists' work become easily attainable to everyone that plays the game.

I like the timing on RB, It seems much more like GH1, but with HOPOs made a bit easier. Doesn't matter to me, the cruel HOPOs on GHI were fun

After a while, I actually got the hang of the hammer-ons/pull-offs in GH1, and I could go through on "Crossroads" and "Texas Flood" getting almost all of them. But, I was very relieved when they made it easier in GH2...
