View Full Version : What's your opinion on numbers in gamertags and the like?
OrdealByFire
04-11-2009, 01:02 AM
It just annoys and frustrates me that people are just that lazy that they can't come up with an original tag. I can't tell you how many times I've seen McLovin022941 and other variations. I'm probably overreacting as usual, but a person can at least make a name -whether it makes sense or not like mine - without numbers at the end. I should add that a name like BuRn7c4ke (?) isn't a bad name because at least it isn't a blatent cover up of a taken tag. (IE aL3x)
Opinions?

Depends.
If they have it all caps and have numbers replacing some of the letters. That's Fine.
If they have it lowercase with numbers replacing the letters, they're stupid.
If they have their name in their gamertag (usually always ends with numbers), they're stupid and not creative.
If they have numbers at the end, yet again. They're not creative.
zack10house

I think one's like mine are fine (zack10house, Zack Tennenhouse, get it? I'm so imaginative and clever)
but if you have the letter x ANYWHERE it doesn't go, you lose
if you have "completelyunoriginalname54628937128649", you lose.
if you have numbers AND x's then we are no longer friends.

TheGodFather73
04-11-2009, 09:55 AM
I guess mine would fall into this category, but it's the nickname I had in Iraq, and the number I used relates to me (my birth year, not the first available variation).
I wanted to use my nickname and tried multiple variations of caps and lowercase and it was either tack on "73" or have the caps/lower case mixed in so much it would look really stupid.
Hence, TheGodFather73.

jeccaneko
04-11-2009, 08:09 PM
I don't really care. A gamertag is a gamertag.
But this is coming from someone who most people don't know how the hell to say their gamertag or what it means, and has been told before that they must've put together random letters. By someone who has a ton of Xs in their gamertag.
FWIW, I wanted to make my gamertag NekomimiMode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNWr_Jlx6p0) which is a reference to an anime theme song (link is reference to the song) but also due to fact I like cats and catgirls in anime are awesome (nekomimi means cat-eared). But that was taken.
Japanese refer to the sounds cats make, meow, as "nyao" or "nya". My gamertag is referencing little things that meow, or cats.
Pronounced as nyaa-n-ko-me-me-mode. This is why I tend to go by my character's name or Jecca in Rock Band/Xbox Live. Don't feel like explaining that to everybody I meet in a game but I still like my gamertag. Also, couldn't make it jeccaneko because at first I shared my gamertag with another person. Not anymore though.

Most of my feelings have already been iterated:
-A number or two is fine. Three is pushing it and after that it's pretty much asinine.
-Names with crazy XxX's and capitalization in them are far more obnoxious.
-Putting 420 in your name instantly makes me wish you would perish.
I'm pretty sure that I could have had my name without the 37 on XBL/PSN but I've just always had them there so I stuck with it.

Clan names annoy me. It's actually, really funny though. My friend and I play Wingman on Gears 2 a lot, and always kick the "clan" players asses.
Once, we played Annex, haha, and we def. had a clan. The gamertags?

Does it count if I was an idiot during the PSN sign-up process and didn't realize you couldn't use spaces till after tacking on 47 to my account name (and switching out a space for an underscore, which I don't know why I made that connection but not to try it without 47)?
edit: And yeah, my PSN is actually Shark_Tank47, not Ragin_Caucasion. Like I said, I was an idiot during the sign-up process. I mean, my Steam ID and the Gamertag I made on my friend's 360 were Ragin_Caucasion and I made them before I got my PS3.

It really all depends.
Like my name, I first was going to be "sonicrocker" over at GHC. But it was taken, so I added 15 randomly. Then added my favorite letter. Then it stuck after GHC. Does that make my name unoriginal?

People have trouble pronouncing mine, too. Although, sometimes I think that's from trying to read it on a small SDTV. My favorite variation so far is "Comma Bird."
Still, I would have thought people would have immediately recognized the "morbid" and just added the preceding syllable in their head. But then, when has thinking ever been a productive endeavor?

Not a big deal, I admit people should be more original, but online originality only takes you so far. My GT is unique but my forum name I add the same number every time, 762 = full metal jacket. I thought trench was a unique s/n but apparently there are a few of them out there. Some screen names although original are far worse than adding a number, I played a guy one day with the gt someone farted....or maybe it was f4rted, whatever the case a lame tag.

CycoMiko138

Cyco Miko has been my nickname for a while now. When it was taken, I added the 138. They're both music references, Suicidal Tendencies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VQDGi6u__E) and The Misfits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhYmuyig3b4), btw.
To anyone who gets annoyed by my "unoriginal" name...I'd say "I'm sorry", but I'm not. I do get annoyed by pointless or obnoxious threads, though. Surprisingly, I'm on the fence about this one.:D

I don't really care. A gamertag is a gamertag.
Same here.
Sure, I've had people criticize my name for uncreative but I could care less about that any more.(Spartan DC 17, combination of Halo and Star Wars in this case. Unoriginal? Maybe, but I have had more original tags in Cycnus Unggoy, but the Spartan DC 17 name fits after so many years of XBL. Most of my friends call me DC).
