It's a poll, thought I'd mention that cause the topic shows up before the poll.
I'm Canadian so 1000 1's isn't really an option but would be the best.

I don't think I've ever seen a $500 bill except when I went on a field trip to this bank and they had one.

Buy something that cost $500 with 100 $5's.
I'd do that.

Speaking as a former sales clerk these things wouldn't be that big of a deal anyway. You would just have to wait a little longer for the clerk to make change is all. So really, you would just be messing with yourself :p

If you try to pay for something that cost 5 dollars with a 500 dollar bill the clerk will probably just laugh at you and say "Sorry I can't change that"
Or they'd laugh at you while you're being hauled away to jail for trying to use counterfeit money, since 500 dollar bills haven't been issued in the US since 1861.

Just as the story of the guy that used 18$ bills.

Don't try to use a $1 Million bill at Wal-Mart, either.

I've seen $1,000,000 but they usually have religious stuff on it saying "Ask yourself the million dollar question: What would Jesus do?"
A bunch of church members were handing them out one time at this plaza that me and my friends were hanging out at. One of my friends was wearing a Slayer shirt and he starting singing lines from Welcome Home by King Diamond when they were around.

If $500 bills existed, I doubt they'd let you get change for them at a register. You would likely just wind up sitting there while the store manager counted out your change from the safe.
And paying for something with 100 $5 bills wouldn't be that big of a hassle, though you'd have to wait for the clerk to count them out and make sure there's actually 100. It's not like they'd have to make change, you know?
I have actually worked as a clerk and had people do things like buy $5 worth of candy with only pennies, and I must say it's far more irritating if you're paying with coins than with bills. Plus, your biggest threat won't be the clerk, it'll be the people behind you in line.

I personally believe that it won't annoy the sales clerk, because they are paid by the hour. If they are counting your money, they are getting paid nonetheless.

Back in my cashier days, I'd have loved for people to buy something that cost $500 and then pay in all fives. Fives were gold! You needed them to give back as change because tens were fairly uncommon and so many people bought something that cost less than $10 and paid for it with a 20.

This. I worked at a milk bar/small convenience store, and after school was out it was always the same kids that'd come in and buy $5 or more worth of candy with nothing but 5 and 10 cent pieces.
The first few times I counted it, but when they kept doing it constantly I had them count the money on the counter, in front of me while I watched. It stopped happening after too long.

Yes you can. Are you really Canadian? 1000 loonies, or 500 toonies would definetly be the best way to go.
I use to tend bar as a living, when I wasn't in the studio or on the road. End of each night I would cash out my tips, change it up for bills, but always kept 10-15 loonies, which I would stash into my change jar at home.
When I reached 250$ worth, I used them to take my friends out for beer and wings, to annoy the waitress (A friend of mine). Nothing like pulling out a sock (no joke) and handing it over to her saying "Please...keep the change".

i know of nowhere that will accept a $500 bill... so thats out.
the option of using 100 $5's will work. or, if you wish to really mess with them use 250 $2's (if you can find that many and are somewhere that will accept them)
unrolled quarters would be almost the best idea followed by a check written on a toilet or something along those lines...

And it appears I didn't read the poll properly.
There is no 500$ Bill in Canada. Not sure about the US bout doubtful.
The largest currency denomination in Canada is the 1000$ bill, which was phased out in late 2000. Those still in circulation remain legal tender, but no further ones will be produced, nor will you ever receive one from a banking institution in Canada.
Which leaves the 100$ Bill as the largest single denomination in Canada.
So you should fix the poll (not sure if that is possible or not though)

One time when I worked at McDonald's in high school this guy ordered food (I can't remember how much it costed total but was less than $10) in the drive through and tried to pay me with a $100 bill. I had to tell him to get change or go away (politely). Store manager decided that he didn't want to accept large bills. Guy got pissed and drove away. I found it amusing.

Those aren't irritating. You just throw them in the bottom of the drawer with checks and big bills.

I always loved it when people payed with $2 bills. I'd swap 'em with my own ones at the end of the shift. I've got seven or eight now I think.

Yeah, there's no $500 bill in the US either. Or $1,000 bill, actually. There are $1,000,000 bills, but they're so rare they're probably worth much more than $1,000,000. But the largest bill currently in circulation is the $100 bill.

Bill Gates currently owns all but three, and plans to devote his entire retirement to tracking down the few that remain. I understand he already purchased a whip, leather jacket, and fedora, just for the occasion. Expect a Steven Spielberg-esque movie in 2030

While I was working at Circuit City I had a 5-year old buy a zune (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8593462&type=product&id=1190678467814) with a bottle of spare change (while his dad stood there laughing his ass off, may I add), the majority of which were nickels.

After looking it up, there is no such thing as a $1,000,000 dollar bill. :(
