I have no idea what makes bass groove happen, or why it exists (I assume its just about long runs) but it totally summons the essential spirit of bass... that whole blue paisley swirly effect is fantastic...
My wife has started playing, and she insists on being lead. Bleh, I thought - although I was so pleased she wanted to join in I decided it was worth it.
I was blown away. It may not be the hardest instrument, but something about the bass groove just hit the spot for me... it was all about chasing the never ending blue.
I love this game. And for the most part, I also love the community. As a gamer of twenty years plus (yep - ZX81 for the win), I am so delighted when a new game still has the power to make me feel like a little kid again.

I believe you get a "bass groove" when you hit a 5x multiplier.

It happens when you are upstrumming all the notes. Like plucking strings on a bass.
EDIT: Nevermind. It's when you get up to 5x. For some reason I thought it was only when you were using upstrumming. I just tried it out and the strumming direction doesn't matter.

Ha, I have to admit, Hitting that bass groove, and seeing that blue swirly thing just makes you want to keep doing it.
I too Love playing the bass in this game now, and yeah its about long runs I think its something like 30 notes? maybe? who knows, all I know is as soon as that blue swirls up, I'm freakin having a blast.
again, cant explain it, just feels really good...

yeah, your deffinetly wrong... who told you that?
I hate upstrumming, works for some people, Like my best friend, (Avid Guitar Hero Player) and doubter of rock band when if first started picking up the hype. (I will prove him wrong this weekend, when he comes down and is amazed) but anyways, he always upstrums.
I tried it, its uncomfortable.

Just so that everyone who reads this does now, the "bass groove" is enabled when your multiplier is either 5x or 6x (The max for bass). I read somewhere that Harmonix added it because playing bass can be boring at times (Easiest instrument in Rock Band most, but not all, of the time), and they wanted to "spice" it up and show the true power that the bass really has in the band with providing the foundations for the rest of the sound. Now, that's not a direct quote and my word usage may vary from the original source, but it's something similar to that.
So, to sum it up -- Bass Groove only depends on your multiplier being 5x or 6x. Nothing else, such as the direction of strumming, matters with bass groove.

As a person who plays a real bass (just started about 8 months ago), I love playing the bass in Rock Band. I always find myself upstrumming as well, even on repeating notes when playing as lead. I know a lot of people prefer to play lead, thats fine with me as I prefer the bass.

I never play bass. I realized that the only times I played bass was to get the upstrumming achievement. I never remembered seeing the bass groove before. So I assumed it was something to do with the upstrumming. I then assumed that it went along with the achievement. Like, as in keeping a bass groove the entire song. Anyway, as soon as I posted that and read it, it just didn't sound right so I booted up the game and got a bass groove using alternate picking. So yes, I was wrong, it happens...

Um... what about "Wanted Dead or Alive"? There are a few places with fast hammer-ons, but that bass part probably has about 1/3 the notes of any other song....

Need to ask...what is the POINT of "Bass Groove" ? I honestly thought it was that you could fingertap all of the notes while you were in "Bass Groove" mode, but just found out that was wrong........it would only make SENSE that it would be finger tapped since on the guitar, the blue swirley = solo.

The guitar solo is not a blue swirly but instead a plain blue background. It's an interesting idea to have the groove mean you can play different, but I could see problems if it suddenly made finger tapping coming into effect mandatorily. One might anticipate the fret and break your streak because it counted as a strummed note in the wrong place.
Of course it could also just mean the solo buttons are in finger-tap mode and the regular buttons would be regular. Much like the guitar solo sections. It occurred to me as well to have a "portable solo section" happen every time the bassist got into the groove. Would be pretty cool too.
