View Full Version : One Power outage and it is all gone.

Today before work the power went out on my street. Nothing major it happens to everyone. The problem is that the power went out just as I had finished a song. No worries I had to go to work anyway so I thought nothing of it. I get home from work ready to rock...my save is trashed, nothing to load and everything I have done is gone.
Now I am not rocking the leaderboards or anything, but I had put in a full 5 star solo run through guitar medium/hard and 30 songs at 4 stars into expert before I had to send for a new guitar. I had also just finished my 5 star run through drums medium and was looking foward to moving on to hard. Not to mention a number of hours of BWT with my wife (who was on her vocals run through medium having 5 stared all easy songs) and the time spent in char creation.
It is all gone because I could not copy my save. Gone through no fault of my own. I love this game but this is a big hit to me and I thought I would let everyone know how very fragile your bands are right now.
Thanks for reading.

yeah unfortunately thats just one downside to power outages and technology i guess.. thats why if its looking nasty outside i usually don't start up any video games cuz the power outages during loads/saves probably isn't good for em..
our bands are not safe in the natural disasters of exploding transformers though, thats for sure.. help save the bands, stop power outages

yeah, it'd be nice if we could actually back these save games up though.

You can, actually. Get a 360 memory unit and you can copy your saved games onto it from the Memory section of the System dashboard blade.
After suffering the same fate with a fried PS2 memory unit, I am always careful about backing up my stuff. I try to do it once every couple of weeks, but always do it before I take the console to a party or on a business trip.
The memory units are a little pricey, but what is your time worth? I've still got about 3 - 4 games that I haven't even played yet from the current releases and don't want to waste time replaying things I don't have to. (For GH and RB, I will run through each difficulty just for the achievements and unlocks, but will jam in Quick Play when I play for fun.) It would suck to have to unlock everything and rebuild my characters all over again.

It's locked on 360 as well; atleast according to some people over at GAF. Not really sure what the purpose is of preventing saves from being copied.

Yep, your saved is locked onto the hard drive (at least with PS3 for sure), so any number of things could go wrong to erase all your progress :D

My saved game is gone also, but due to a different problem. Yesterday they came out with the fall update for Xbox 360. Right after the update, I moved my profile (no saves at all, never move those, only the profile itself) to the memory unit and brought it to a friends' house-thus eliminating the ever-so-long process of recovering it. And when I plugged it into his Xbox360, it looked empty. No profile. No saves. Hmm. So later, after rocking out on his band for a while, I went home to continue my solo career on drums on expert. I turned on the 360, where I still couldn't find my profile on the memory unit, and looked for my profile on the mu and the hard drive. Nothing. I noticed Halo 3 had disappeared out of the games section of the memory, so I looked around at some other recently played games. Nothing. Just maps and songs. DLC. That's it. So I recovered my profile and it took about 3 or 4 times to actually get it. Once downloaded and signed in, still no saves. What's the deal? I bought a transfer kit today, but that won't help me fix the problem. My saves are gone, my controllers are broken, Microsoft thought a wireless controller would make up for 2 years of gamesaves being taken away. I didn't get offered a free game like everyone else that had repairs. This is taking all the fun out of gaming for me...

The game should keep a backup automatically, that would be trivial to do.

In this case, a backup wouldn't even help because I imagine it would have disappeared as well. The only solution would be to allow copying of the game save onto some other medium.
I have all of my a/v equipment on UPS power protection. I use tripplite brand but APC also makes a good battery backup. It handles brown-outs, spikes, surges, etc. They run anywhere from 50 bucks and up, but totally worth it, getting an extra 30 minutes if the powers off. Be sure to plug your critical components into the battery side of the unit. Check newegg for ordering, and make sure to get enough watts to keep everything on if it all goes out at once.

No I think it disappeared because the power went out while it was writing the file to disk, resulting in a corrupt file which on a console means it 'disappeared'. If there was a copy, it would not have been touched. You would think they would save a new copy, verify it, and then rotate them, automatically but I suppose this is not a 'marketable feature'.
