View Full Version : 3's & 7's Lyrical Difference

Has anyone else noticed (unless you are a QTOSA fan you may not have) that the lyrics at the end of 3's & 7's are completely different from the album version?
The Era Vulgaris version goes:
I keep going over and over again
To never ending places I've never been
No one's catching on, calling my bluff
The devil made me holier than every man
What you do, say it with a smile boy
Making us all forget
While the rock band version changes after calling my bluff.
Saying something about the truth always having 3 sides, yours mine and something something something.
If it's a master track, why is it different?
That part screws me up every time!

Won't Get Fooled Again's lyrics are wrong, too. It mixes Townshend's and Daltrey's version and makes no sense.
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the foe, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain?t blamed
?Cause the banners they all flown in the last war?
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
Roger singing version :
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
Pete singing version :
And history ain?t blamed
?Cause the banners have all flown in the last war?

I haven't played that one yet so I guess I didn't notice that.
Interesting.

yeah, it's a bit odd, ive noticed wrong lyrics in a few songs, but WGFA stands out because it's my most favorite song, ever.
I knew 3's and 7's sounded off, too.
HMX! ADDRESS US =P
a quick post from apples simply stating "dude man" would be sufficient

Yep. It's sung differently as well. Just sounds like an alternate take of the song. Oddly enough, the different version in Rock Band is also the same different version that appears in Guitar Hero 3, where I originally noticed the change. Odd indeed.

It threw me off as well. I'm a big QoTSA fan and that messed me up pretty bad on vocals. Guess I'll have to get used to it!

I'm confused with your post. It appears that the last two lines of the Rock Band version you posted and the last two lines of the "Pete singing version" are identical?

but, Roger Daltrey (and the shotgun) sings the song.
(plus I forgot to edit the rockband version, ooops)

Yup, we were discussing this yesterday: http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=12457 (The altered 3's and 7's lyrics are posted there, too.)
I'm curious to know if the game version of the song is a radio, video, or single-CD edit, or if its only appearance is in the two games... that would be strange (but cool!).
(By the way, MistressMissy, out of curiosity, do you have a source for the line "The devil made me holier than every man"? I thought it was "The devil made me, only we never met" like in the game, but it's pretty hard to tell... :p)

There was a big debate pre-release about the line "only if I'm going too fast" in Reptilia. People were adamant that he never says the word 'only' there. One of the HMX sound guys mentioned that he very clearly says 'only' on the vocal master, and that seems to be the case here as well.
They've listened to the vocal masters by themselves. They can tell you exactly when Bowie breathes, and the lyrics are based off of what was actually sung, not what the artist said they sang.

When I looked up the lyrics, a couple different ones said holier than every man. The one I pulled was from songmeanings.net.
I watched the unedited video on suicidegirls.com, just to be sure the video version wasn't different, and it's the same as the album.
Damn. I did a search too and did not see that other thread!

That's not what we are saying. We're saying the end of the song lyrics are completely different. There's no doubting it. We're not just mistaking what they are saying.
Yeah in The Killers - When You Were Young there's that 'send me' line which is practically inaudible in the actual song, but it is there, so they threw it in.
That's not the case here. The Rock Band version and the album version are different lyrics.

In that case, I would assume the master they have is not the same as the album version.

It's pretty obvious they didn't want lyrics that the mid west would find "controversial".

I'm just going to point it out here:
They took the swears out of Creep. And you can 100% it if you sing the original lyrics or what's in the game. For the most part it's about pitch. Just sing the same way. :)
I can't speak about the "talky parts" though, as I can't get those even knowing what exactly is being said.

Innnteresting... there's another line in the songmeanings.net transcription that I'd question, too ("Soon you will appear" instead of "based on who you appear"), but I guess without actual lyrics in the liner notes, it's hard to make a real call on it. XD
(Not surprised the topic didn't come up on a search, VB forum search would make it damn near impossible to find "3's" or "7's". Ah well, this one has a better title anyway. ;))

Erm.. what's controversial about either version?

True enough (and I still sing the unedited version of "Welcome Home"), but in "3's and 7's", the tune/pitch actually is slightly different. You can sing the lyrics of your choice, but you'll have to learn the game version's tune to do so. ;)
Personally, I still kind of wonder why it was done; dealing with it isn't much of an issue. ^^; (And I like the game version better anyway ;D)

I bet they submitted one version of the song to RO and HMX, and when it came time to put the album together, they used a different one.

GH3 and Rock Band both have the same version of the song.

That's what he meant.

It should be noted 3s and 7s was handed to GH before the album even hit stores. Same may go for RB.

They did already explain this in the other topic about Reptilia. I just don't remember what it was exactly so look that topic up.

Thanks for the heads-up, Rock_Starman... for anyone interested in the Reptilia discussion:
http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=4878
So, yes, it sounds like QotSA submitted an early version of the track to the games, and released a different version on the album... I suppose it would take someone from the band to answer the real "why" of that. ^^;

Just to quote the important parts for people too lazy to look:
"Typically all lyrics are represented in game as they were submitted to us. There are exceptions, but usually it's placed as it was written, which can sometimes vary slightly from how it's actually performed."
"Regarding 'Reptilia'...it should be noted that there's a difference between the master tracks as they were first recorded and the mix of those tracks that ultimately made it onto the released album. "Only" was indeed on the vocal master track. In the song, you just have to listen closely; it's merely buried under other instruments."
