View Full Version : More Rock Band than Guitar Hero...

I know this is a pretty pointless thread, but...
I'm a Real Estate Agent and I get to see many houses and many, many basements...
I have never seen a guitar hero guitar while visiting a house, but I have seen tons of Rock Band stuff. Just last weekend I visited 4 houses, and 3 of them had rockband set up in the basement. Thought it was pretty cool since I'm a HMX fanboy and all...
That's it, thanks for reading!

pretty much just this.
its obvious that little kids and people who dont know better enjoy GH,but informed people enjoy Rock band.

I just thought it was an interesting observation. Everyone knows GH outsells RB. It's just intersting to me that I only see people with RB when I'm showing houses. I'm always tempted to ask them if I can play...but I must remember...I'm at work!

My comment has nothing to do with being a fanboy. I got Guitar Hero II when it came out without even having played the first one (because I never have nor will ever own a Playstation), and I don't think anyone can deny the tracklist on there was incredible, even if they were basically all covers. I even got Guitar Hero III and that's when the blowing began. The boss battles were unnecessary and unfun, though the wireless guitar was a plus, though I didn't like the design. I didn't even bother getting World Tour because basically more than half those songs are on Rock Band 2 alone.
Me, fanboy? Maybe now I am, if by being a fanboy means preferring a superior product.

On the real estate listings, there's no search tickbox for "able to host awesome Rock Band nights"

My wife and I spent the last 2 months house hunting with a realtor (That's why this thread caught my eye).
I would say at least every second or third house had the RB drums set up either in the family room or the basement.
But the best was one of the last houses we looked at. Our realtor knew I needed a very large, unfinished basement, as it needs to accommodate my home studio, and I would prefer to do the sound proofing myself as I build it. She took us to a house that not only had RB setup in the family room (poor sap was stuck with the PS2 version unfortunately), but down in the basement was a cheap ass drum set. She thought that might be a selling point for me, that someone with a cheap drum kit in their basement would sell me on it.

Is it not possible to just not like that game?

It depends. My house sits in the middle of what used to be a big stream. Neighbors have flooding problems with rain sometimes but I never do. Maybe my sump pump and everything is more awesome than theirs. :p
Only thing irritating about where my house is is the ground stays wet longer than most people's lawns. This makes green stuff start appearing on the side of my house and I've gotta clean it off every so often.

That's probably a good answer, considering I'm a pretty old guy and miss the days of actually getting a bunch of friends together to go outside and play a game of baseball over getting online and playing MLB2Kwhatever.

Oh and I used to like GH, but I think Neversoft messed it up. Overcharting, graphics became worse, and also there is too many problems with the Wii version of GHWT. It has so many problems that the only thing that keeps me from taking it back is because I have non-refundable DLC on it. I'm not buying the next Guitar Hero, the only exception is the DS versions.
Note that I did not say it sucks or anything like that, but my opinion is Rock Band 2 is better.

No, in Canada, when buying/selling a home, you only list sq/footage based on the finished area - you do not count basements or attics unless they are finished areas.
Yes, it's a massive place. Wife wanted room to entertain friends and family, I wanted to be able to hide from the future children we plan to have. =).
Average new homes in Ottawa are in the 2300-2400 sq/ft range, so 3000 isn't really that large, in general terms.
But it's my first home, and hopefully my last.

I think that finished basements are included in the square footage...but I know that finished basement area sometimes appraises for slightly less than 'above ground' area.

I live in New Jersey and having a basement, finished or unfinished is a huge selling point around here. Generally (in my experience of buying homes) the basement is not included in square footage, even if finished. But, it's been awhile since I bought a new home, so that could have changed. For me, if a house didn't have a full basement, I wouldn't even consider buying it. The extra room/potential living space is just too imporant to me.

Well, I'm not an architect, but I play one at home for a living (actually, I'm NOT an architect, but I do design homes for a living...technically, I'm a draftsman).
I know that when I design a house with a basement, I have to list "Finished Basement" area and/or "Unfinished Basement" area. And the building permit fees are based on Finished vs. Unfinished.
As far as the legality of "listing" it (advertising it, so to speak), I have no idea.
I just looked at my last appraisal and it's all listed separately (which I guess is a no-brainer), but my finished basement area appraised for the exact same dollar amount ($124/sq.ft.) as the main floor area.....for whatever that is worth???

Fair enough Sarge, sometimes you gotta test drive a few models before you find the right fit ;)
Also, my realtor friend says that finished basements are NOT generally included in sq. ft when a home is listed for sale.
It CAN be but only if it has retrofit status, which means that your reno's (finishing the basement) are declared to the government. Most people don't do that though.
You'd typically see 3000 sq ft + finished basement.
I assume if the home is built with a finished basement it is included.

Yeah, most don't announce when the finish their basements, because they need to get building permits, then have it inspected (if wiring and plumbing are being done) to ensure it's to code with Ontario's laws, and then taxes go up, but so does the value of your property. And if you intend to increase insurance coverage, it has to be to code.
For me, it's all going to be on the up and up. My whole family is trained for it from electrical to plumbers, hard floor specialists, painters you name it. So cost to do it will be low, and its worth it to cover the amount of equipment my home studio will have.

The sad part for me is that I am eventually going to have to go through the process of applying for a mortgage and buying a house, during this lousy time. They keep saying it's a buyers market but the houses are still priced beyond belief (here in New Jersey). I am not looking forward to the process again.
Though I can say that I have used the same real estate agent for nearly all my home purchases and it's really nice to have a good agent whom you connect with.

Well yeah that's pretty much the name of the game up here. The brokers probably do it off the books though. I have a contract with a bank and the kickback they get from us is in writing, nothing shady or under the table.

It's never a fun process, but you're doing pretty well if you have a good agent.

I will agree with you 100% there.
We didn't know how the process worked, but when we were checking out the public site for Canadian Realtors that lists all available homes, we saw one we liked, and the realtor turned out to be a childhood friend of my wife, going back to pre-kindergarden.
Doesn't mean I would trust her instantly, since they hadn't seen each other in over 8 years, but it helped.
And she turned out to be fantastic, so I would stick with her and recommend her for sure.

I don't think GH "blows", but I do agree RB is the better game.
