I'd like to see that. Their music is really easy to sing along with, it grows on you, and some of their songs lend themselves rather well to Rock Band in my opinion.
If I decided the songs for a 3-Pack, it would be:
Doctor Worm - Bass solo FTW. Also kickin' vocals and it's about a drummer, so the drummer gets a lot to do as well.
Cap'm - This song feels like it was made for Rock Band. Guitar, bass, drums, and vocals all sound like a blast to me.
Till My Head Falls Off - Once again, a fun bass part, great vocals, fun drums, and there's a guitar solo this time.
So that's what I would personally love to see come out at some point.

Good list! I've been really pulling for Harmonix to put in Ana Ng (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dQLkxz6c2E) for quite some time now, but I could do with any (or all) of the songs you mentioned.
My three pack list:
Ana Ng
We're The Replacements
Fingertips (Mostly a test for the singer to be able to sing in a number of different vocal styles.)
Since Fingertips doesn't have much in the way of actual instrumentation, I could substitute that for Cyclops Rock.

Maybe I'm old, but I always considered Flood their best album. I couldn't imagine a TMBG DLC without "Birdhouse In Your Soul"!

I would love a TMBG set. They should release a huge box set...mmmm

Doctor Worm, while not my personal favorite TMBG song, is also the one that I think would be the best to have in Rock Band. If it were released alone or as part of a TMBG pack, there's no amount of money I wouldn't pay to have it in. I really, really hope Harmonix is considering getting a pack from TMBG.
Other TMBG songs that would be good fits: The Guitar, The Mesopotamians, New York City, Birdhouse In Your Soul, I Should Be Allowed to Think, Ana Ng, and Don't Let's Start (my favorite song).
Please see this thread, Harmonix!

Remember they want this accessible to everyone and not just TMBG fans, so its got to have at least recognizable songs.
Birdhouse is a must.
I'd also like Rhythm Section Want Ad. Other than those two I'd be happy with whatever.

I have to say that my favorite three that I think would be recognized and actually sell:
Birdhouse In Your Soul
Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Particle Man
But If I were to pick some awesome and fun songs for DLC, I would have to nominate:
Dr. Worm
The Guitar
Don't Let's Start
I'm Impressed (Especially for drums)
Ana Ng
Pencil Rain
Man, It's So Loud In Here
Boss Of Me (More recognisable song for the general fans)

Very much agreed. I think that these three would be the best for rockband. the other ones are good too, but these are the three most recognizable in my opinion. man theres so many songs from so many bands that i would love to have on rockband. the excitement of new songs every week kills me since i have to wait till thursday. o wait it is thursday, but its not 5pm yet.....guess i got to wait a couple more hours to play some oasis.

The singles off flood suffer from Overplayed Single Syndrome. A good TMBG pack would have no more than one song from a given album. So my picks would be Birdhouse In Your Soul, Spiraling Shape and Ana Ng.
Or if you want to go totally nuts, FINGERTIPS!!!

TMBG - Flood and the term "Overplayed" should not be used in the same sentence unless the sentence is "Flood can never be overplayed"!

James K. Polk would be a fun one too. Give the bass something to do! Or XTC vs. Adam Ant - not my favorite song, but reasonably interesting on guitar, I guess.

I'll chime in for TMBG. So many songs to list and it's already so late. Ana Ng would be great. I love all their stuff but some of the later albums they made with a full band would work really well in RB.

Another vote for TMBG.
Their earlier work used a drum machine (which was the whole point of Rhythm Section Want Ad). It probably wouldn't be too interesting for the drummer. They would have to use different versions.
I love all of the recommendations above. I'd like to see the entire Flood alblum. Others:
They'll Need a Crane
It's Kickin' In
Damn Good Times
Take Out the Trash
Songs that should not be DLC:
Minimum Wage (100% vocals anyone can do)
Absolutely Bill's Mood (if only for the lack on an electric rake instrument in Rock Band for the into and closing bits)
You'll Miss Me (because the vocals are too weird)
Spy (the live version where they give all the band members solos and then do a long improvisation directed by John where they possibly break into Tamborine Man)
O, Do Not Forsake Me (because I think it may be vocals only)
The World's Address (Joshua Fried re-mix) because I really can't stand it.
That bit of two people talking about dial-a-song that got recorded on the answering machine is right out (the fact that I could probably pass the talking bits the first time not withstanding).
Pootytang907

TMBG would be great... I'd like to see these three...
Birdhouse (probably my favorite of their songs)
Where Your Eyes Don't Go (such a damn good song but could be confusing for the instruments)
Ana Ng (ROCK!!!)
This'll NEVER happen though. TMBG just isn't popular enough... though i'm sure all of their fans would rush out to buy RB and the DLC were they to create DLC for them. This band probably has the most loyal fanbase EVAH!

Absolutely right, with the possible exception of Boss Of Me replacing Birdhouse In Your Soul. (I prefer Birdhouse, but I think Boss Of Me is more well known.)
If going with my favorite songs, though, I would say:
Don't Let's Start
New York City
She's An Angel
Alanzo
03-14-2008, 04:55 AM
For a three pack:
Ana Ng
Birdhouse in Your Soul
*Song from The Else* (The Mesopotamians, Withered Hope, or The Cap'm would be my choices)
A six pack would be epic:
Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head
Cyclops Rock
Don't Let's Starts
Color Spray
03-17-2008, 02:01 AM
I'm really hoping for some TMBG on Rock Band. Harmonix doesn't know how much money they'd make if they added a pack of their more recognized songs like "Boss of Me" or "Experimental Film" (for all the Homestar/Strongbad fans). And I'm certain TMBG would be more than willing to allow them to use their songs. I hope someone from Harmonix sees this thread.
And just my $0.02:
Boss of Me
Experimental Film
Birdhouse in Your Soul
Ana Ng
The Guitar
Don't Let's Start
And not sure if anyone mentioned these two yet, which I think would be great:
Sleeping in the Flowers
S-E-X-X-Y
cryptoknight
03-17-2008, 07:23 AM
Well obviously
Birdhouse in your soul
Then it gets a bit tricker... Istanbul.. but they'd have to fake the Fiddle or whatever the heck that instrument is that they use.
The Guitar
Women and Men
Mammals
She's a Hotel Detective
She's an Angel
would all be good... and before we go "it has to be well heard"... I only recognize about 40% of the songs on RB now... so they obviously didn't make it to that specification when they made RB.

I would pay anything for TMBG songs.
for a three pack
birdhouse in your soul
the statue got me high
ana ng
for the six pack add
dont let start
Dinner bell ( I would love to see someone sing those vocals)
New york city
seriously i don't know how I could choose just six, if it were me I would release 15-20 of there songs they would just be awsome to play in RB.

I can't claim to be a huge TMBG fan. I only own Apollo 18, and am familar with some of their more popular songs. But one thing's for sure, I'd purchase any song they had available on Rock Band, whether I knew it previously or not.

It'd be pretty amazing if HMX found a way to put all 20+ parts of "Fingertips" into the game. Alas, tis only wishing thinking...
My ideal six pack would be:
Ana Ng
Don't Lets Start
Cyclops Rock
They'll Need A Crane
Purple Toupee
Your Racist Friend (It's a little skimpy on guitar at some parts, but it has a pretty badass solo. Plus, the almighty samba break down!)
We're The Replacements (Rock n' rollin' to the break of dawn...)

There's a bunch of good songs by these guys..I've been a fan for a long, long (long) time.
Thing about Birdhouse, there isn't a ton a guitar in it is there?
And I know this would never be chosen because I don't think it would work, but just think of the vocals on 'Letterbox' in Rock Band..that would be a tough one for people not familiar with it..hehe.

How about all of Factory Showroom? Yeah, it's not their best album (hard to steal that from Flood), but it fits into Rock Band so well. Plus, there's the solos in New York City and Till My Head Falls Off... oh, the solos... and the drums in that last part of Spiraling Shape. And hey... James K. Polk would just be just damn fun to sing.

Just skimming this forum for the first time--and I'm certainly voting for TMBG in RB2 or as DLC. We're already getting a taste of geek-rock with JoCo and Devo, why not keep it going?
"Ana Ng" would be my #1 pick--it'd be a lot of fun for all instruments, it's definitely a Rock Song, and doesn't have a major keyboard/accordion lead.
But I will say this now: I will buy any and all They Might Be Giants songs Harmonix cares to include in any Rock Band game.
Without question.
Even if it's "Boss of Me."

Totally the rock version of 'The Sun (is a mass of incandescent gas)'
Anyone mention 'The Mesopotamians' yet? It's perfect for Rock Band, and it's about a struggling rock band. (That happens to be made up of ancient kings and what not)
bfiggins

Ok, I think I've got my perfect Track Pack together. Something old, something new, and something off-beat.
Birdhouse in Your Soul
The 'classic song' that everyone will recognize from TMBG. It's got the potential for great note tracks, and the nonsense-yet-meaningful lyrics that are really the core of the TMBG experience.
The Mesopotamians
The 'new song', from their latest CD. Even though it's the last song on the disc, I like it because it fits in with Rock Band's somewhat self-referential sense of garage band humor, such as talking about the band driving around in an Econoline van, searching for someone who cares about them.
Why Does the Sun Shine? (Live)
I remember reading that many of the songs in Rock Band were chosen not just because each instrument was interesting, but because they had great 'band moments' where everyone played in unison or otherwise felt a sense of togetherness. Why Does The Sun Shine is like one long band moment, a wild jubilation of drum and guitar set to a bouncy children's song.
So that's my 'definitive' Track Pack. It leaves out a whole pile of classics that have the right sort of instruments, and deserve to be on here. But if we can't get a whole album, I think this has the right mix.
If we only got one song, I'd say it should be Why Does the Sun Shine. It's got a strong appeal for TMBG fans, and even for non-fans, it's just darn fun to play.

Must songs are definitely Birdhouse In Your Soul and Ana Ng. I think those two cover the older songs. While Istanbul is probably my favorite TMBG song, I'm not sure it'd be a great Rock Band song. Same goes for Particle Man.
Then I think you'd have to get something fairly new in there, so either The Mesopotamians or Experimental Film would be perfect.
Of course, a 6-pack would open up some other doors.
The Statue Got Me High
Mammal
The Guitar
See the Constellation
Lucky Ball & Chain
Mrs. Train
I'm Impressed
Those would be good, too.

I do love Birdhouse, but I would really only want it in if they included the live version from Severe Tire Damage. It's got much more energy to it and there seems to be more of a "rock" emphasis. Which I know is not what all TMBG fans like about them, but I do!

I'm not going to say I'd only want it if it were live, as I'd buy ANY TMBG SONGS I COULD YOU HEAR ME HARMONIX? But I agree their live songs are almost always more "rock-y" than the studio versions, and therefore more well-suited to Rock Band.
But anything. I'd buy it.

I was just listening to The Else today, and that entire album sounds perfect for the game. Really challenging drums and bass with strong vocals and a good amount of guitar. This is a great album and I'd love to see it down the line, even if it isn't the most well known work of theirs.

I love TMBG. I'd buy any song put up for download.
I have a hard time imagining their old stuff working in Rock Band, though. Great songs, but not so much rocking... unless they take live versions or rework them some how. Stuff like Birdhouse, and Ana Ng. Are drum machine drums fun to play in Rock Band? Doesn't sound like fun to me...
The John Henry sound would be a great fit for Rock Band.
As for a 3 pack, I think this would be a fun to play.
The Mesopotamians
The Guitar
Stomp Box
The bass line in The Guitar in particular is fun to play. I've played it on a real bass... addicting.
But maybe They Might Be Giants is being put on hold for Rock Band 3:Accordion and Saxophone...
Brawndo
09-16-2008, 03:01 PM
I would buy any They Might Be Giants DLC, period. I'd be sad if all we got was Birdhouse, Istanbul, and Particle Man, especially since I believe those second two are ill-suited for playing in Rock Band.
Some ones I'd like to see that are getting little to no love in this thread:
Hotel Detective
See the Constellation
Hypnotist of Ladies
I definitely think the live, surf-rock sounding version of "Why Does The Sun Shine?" would be great.
And if they put Dinner Bell on there, it would really make my day. I have been practicing to sing that song for... wait what year did Apollo 18 come out?

While I would love to see a HUGE collection of TMBG songs on Rock Band, and seriously I could sit here forever listing great songs for the game, I'm surprised at the very few posts pointing out "Cyclops Rock," which would be such a fun song to play on guitar. That song would be great in this game.

As much as I'd love to stand by myself and sing/guitar to "Whirlpool", I doubt that's happening.
"Boss of Me" would be quite fun, but I still have to go with "The Shadow Government" (if it's a problem, just change it to "my math lab") for sheer, jump-around-and-act-the-fool fun. Of course, "Birdhouse...", "Ana Ng", and the other earlier singles would be fantastic, as well.
Would most definitely dig seeing "Brain Problem Situation", "Your Mom's Alright", or "Tippecanoe And Tyler Too" get some love.
All this typed, one song above all others would shove me ever closer to just dropping all work and running home: "I've Got A Fang".
jchensor
10-22-2008, 09:46 PM
"Shadow Government" would be great, agreed. But as much as I love "Brain Problem Situation," there's no lead guitar on it, so I don't think it would work. :-(
And before I realized there was a Thread of Threads, I created a new thread that has thankfully been lost amongst the sea of threads where I noted that "Destination Moon" would be really good for Rock Band. Listen to the lead guitar and the drums. They'd both be really fun to play. Though I don't think during the bridge, you'd use a guitar to play the harpsichord parts. ^_^ That would be kinda painful.
"John Henry" would be a good album in general, since that's by far the most "Rock Band"-ish they've ever been. Their drummer at the time, Brian Doherty I believe, was really talented, and had a lot of really interesting Drum Tracks. Just about every song would be an exercise in different drum skills. Listen to "Out of Jail" and you can totally hear how that would be a very different and challenging drum track. "Stomp Box" would just be a blast to play. "AKA Driver" would be cool, but the lead guitarist might get bored without much to play outside of chorus and bridge. ^_^
And I'd HAVE to put in a vote for "Meet James Ensor", which is where I got my namesake from. ^_^

I almost thought there were no TMBG fans that play RB!
Thanks for proving me wrong.
Anyway, I would do a 12-pack or something like that:
Don't Let's Start
Rhythm Section Want Ad
Ana Ng
Purple Toupee
Somebody Keeps Moving My Chair
Twisting
Birdhouse In Your Soul (wouldn't work too well, but w/e)
Sleeping In The Flowers

My TMBG Download Pack:
-Birdhouse In Your Soul, (Not much guitar, but makes up in vocals)
-Don't Let's Start, (Repetitive drums, but a fan favorite)
-New York City, (Probably a better for Rock Band)
-Sensurround, (Also an all around better for the game)
-Spiraling Shape, (Harmonic guitar parts into power chords = awesome)
-A Self Called Nowhere, (Those drum breakdowns get progressively tougher)
-Sleeping In The Flowers, (Almost forgot this one, awesome guitar and drums)
Ana NG would not be in this list because I could see it in Rock Band 3.

I mostly just wanted to add my voice to the chorus...TMBG IN RB '09!
As Ana Ng is my favorite song I vote for it above all others, but any of their stuff would be greatly appreciated (and immediately purchased).

I don't mean to come across as obsessed, but I registered to say that I would pay $200 for a TMBG pack for Rock Band. Actually, I would probably pay more than that depending on which songs were included. (FWIW, I just looked at my ITunes library- 364 of the 1118 songs I own are from TMBG.)
Considering playability and marketability, I'd put Dr. Worm, Ana Ng, and Birdhouse in a three-pack. A second three-packl, chosen considering my own personal preferences, would be New York City, The Guitar (Lion Sleeps Tonight), and James K. Polk.
Edited to add: I just realized I left out The Mesopotamians, an obvious choice as mentioned above. Really, let's just make this a fifty-pack and be done with it.

Here's my picks from Flood:
Birdhouse in Your Soul
Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Your Racist Friend
I'd suggest Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love, but don't want to deal with the "it's only a minute and a half how can you charge full price?" crowd.
Heck, just release Flood as an album HMX :D

i think that you need to take the instruments used in their songs into consideration as well. Songs like "B**tard Wants to Hit Me", "D*** Good Times", "Ana Ng", "Doctor Worm", "Snail Shell", "Take Out The Trash", "I'm Impressed", "Someone Keeps Moving My Chair", "The Mesopotamians", "The Shadow Government", "I Palindrome I", "Statue Got Me High", and "I Should Be Allowed To Think" would all be perfect, and fun songs for Rock Band.

adding another voice to the flood (pun FULLY intended) of calls for TMBG in RB...
if I had to pick only three:
Experimental Film off The Spine
Ana Ng off Lincoln
The Mesopotamians off The Else
I'd be all over almost any TMBG released as DLC, obviously, but those three strike me as working very well in the game. I have trouble imagining "Birdhouse..." or "Istanbul..." being particularly fun in game (I know, blasphemy). a shame, since those are the two TMBG songs that every person who has ever lived knows... seriously, Julius Caesar loved listening to "Birdhouse...".
(also, I have to voice support for "I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die", just because, to a non-drummer, that drum part sounds positively sadistic.)

I fully agree. I've loved TMBG ever since I saw Experimental Film on homestar runner. Harmonix had Trogdor in GH2, so I wouldn't put it past them to get some TMBG. I would absolutely LOVE to play Experimental Film. This three pack sounds frickin awesome.
In terms of adding fun instrument parts, the ending guitar solo on Damn Good Times would be a lot of fun.

However, I'd really wanna play "Instanbul (Not Constantinople)", since I used to hear it on the radio all the time.

Birdhouse In Your Soul
Unforgotten
Memo To Human Resoures
Prevenge
The Cap'm

A Self Called Nowhere

Youth Culture Killed My Dog
Please bring us some TMBG DLC, any songs from them would make my day.

Everyone here has already mentioned anything I'd like to play (which is really all of it), so I'll just add another voice to the conversation.
I think Severe Tire Damage is the place to go for the rocking versions of classics. I guess I'm in the minority when I say that Flood isn't even in my top three TMBG albums. Though I just saw them live last week and the played Flood from start to finish and that was awesome.
My list would go: Lincoln, Factory Showroom, Apollo 18. Oh well.

I would love to see some They Might Be Giants in Rock Band. However, one limitation is that Rock Band does not include peripherals for saxophone or accordian. It would be important to find TMBG songs which actually use guitars and drums.

So, I don't think I've ever posted on the Rock Band forums, but for TMBG downloads, I'd do it.
and pay money.
Let's see... I don't think the songs have to be 'singles', because look at it already. Harvey Danger (who has ONE big single) doesn't even have that song available for download... instead, it's something most of us have never heard of.
The same can be said about many artists... we'll get a few singles, and then a few 'i-dunno-what-dat-is'.
Moving on... for a 3-pak, I'd choose --
Cyclops Rock
S-E-X-X-Y
Birdhouse in Your Soul
Add in Particle Man, Istanbul, and Boss of Me for a 6-pack that has recognizable tracks, and would be a steal at the normal 6-pack price.
...and somehow, I don't think I could deny pretty much any TMBG download they gave me. Well, except for the talky Dial-A-Song track, but that's not a song, now is it? :)

With the keyboard, a TMBG pack would be awesome - but I agree with many that the live versions would be better suited to the game. Honestly, with their seemingly near unlimited access to recording studios, they could do a nice clean re-record of their live versions in a studio setting. I'd love to see a solid Flood five pack:
1) Birdhouse In Your Soul (goes without saying - with a spiced up guitar solo - horns to keyboard)
2) Istanbul (live version with crazy spanish guitar intro)
3) Twisting (with the two false endings, key jumps, and "big rock ending" they do in concerts)
4) Particle Man (one close to the original version, but played with a live band - accordian solos spiced up a bit)
5) Letterbox (Again, pretty much like the album version)

I agree about the live tracks. The live version of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" from Severe Tire Damage came up on the iPod the other day, and I thought about how terrific it would be in RB3.
And, of course, if they were to do a live song pack, they'd have to throw "Disappointing Show" in there. :)

Not content to simply wait it out, I started this group on FaceBook yesterday. Get "Doctor Worm" in Rock Band 3! (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Get-Doctor-Worm-in-Rock-Band-3/173460156009535) I figured if they can get Betty White on SNL, they can do well to improve the odds of "Doctor Worm" being in Rock Band 3.
In addition to this, I think "Boss of Me" would be an obvious choice, since people have actually heard of it. "Don't Let's Start," "Birdhouse," and "Ana Ng" are all must-haves, but then that leaves us with four John Linnell songs and only one that Flansburgh sings. Maybe something like "Prevenge" could work, or "Hotel Detective," or "The Guitar."

Hell yes... I'm a cheapskate but I would shell out money for a TMBG pack. They're one of my favorite bands and my fiancee and I's first real date was at a TMBG show. When we got RB3, the first thing my 10-year-old stepson asked was "Does it have any They Might Be Giants songs on there?"
They're going on tour soon and releasing a new album in the fall, so nothing would be better than to release a pack with a song from the new album and a bunch of Their classic stuff, and have Them promote it at all of their concerts when They go on tour... I've been to almost a dozen TMBG concerts, and all but one of them were sold out or near-capacity, so it would reach thousands of people.
They could use the keyboard for the accordion parts, I guess.
Don't Let's Start
Ana Ng
Birdhouse In Your Soul
The Guitar
Meet James Ensor
Till My Head Falls Off
Doctor Worm
Damn Good Times (live version with an extended guitar solo?)
The Cap'm
There's a nine songs spanning their career, with one from each of their adult rock albums (excluding the Dark Ages between Severe Tire Damage and The Spine).
Add in a song from their forthcoming album and you have a 10-song pack I'd shell out $18 to $20 for (me and probably nobody else).
John Henry has a lot of good songs that would work (Snail Shell, Destination Moon, Out of Jail, etc.), but I had to go with my personal favorite.
Most of my favorite songs are too obscure or just not suited to Rock Band: It's Not My Birthday, Dead, They Got Lost (STD), See The Constellation, Nightgown of the Sullen Moon. No One Knows My Plan has a decent guitar solo but the rest is all horns. Still, for me it's not about the challenge but having a good time with others.

They Might Be Giants would be great for Rock Band 3, what with the keys and all. Birdhouse in Your Soul is number one priority; anything else would be gravy.
I don't know a huge amount about They Might Be Giants' discography, to be totally honest. That being said however, Flood is one of my favorite albums of all time and probably one of the albums I've heard all the way through the most times. I could never see the entirety of Flood being released on Rock Band (though that would be cool), but perhaps a 5-12 pack of their best hits. It would most likely be a 3-5 pack, but I'm being optimistic. Here are two ideas that I have:

Boss of Me
Doctor Worm

Hearing Aid
Mimimum Wage/Letterbox
Whistling in the Dark
Hot Cha
Women & Men
Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love
They Might Be Giants X
Road Movie to Berlin
One can, can't they? Hope everyone enjoys.
