Here is my list of ultimate songs and bands that Rock Band needs. These songs and bands are chosen because they each engage each of the 4 instruments with interesting and complex parts. While the guitar parts may not have shredding solos of that other guitar peripheral game (which shall remain nameless), they are no less difficult due to the structure and changes in time signature throughout the songs.

Rush – Geddy, Alex, and Neil FTW!!!! I realize Rock Band shipped with a cover :( of Tom Sawyer, so I don’t know how difficult it will be to get them on board for master tracks. I could list almost their entire catalogue here, but I will limit to the best of the best.

Free Will – an obvious and popular choice, but please don’t stop here.

La Villa Strangiato – instrumental—sorry singers—but longer and more amazing than YYZ. I’m not saying pass on YYZ, but it’s been done already.

Xanadu – my personal favourite Rush song.

2112 – how awesome would it be to play this entire epic 20+ minutes of music…though I’d settle for just Overture and Temples of Syrinx. Hemispheres would also be awesome, but it is less well known.

Natural Science – 9+ minutes of bass, guitar, and drumming fury! While I like Xanadu better as a whole, this song may fit better into Rock Band’s gameplay.

New World Man – didn’t see this one coming, did ya? This song sounds simple, but the bass and the rhythms of the guitar and drums are complex.

The Camera Eye – another long, complex song. It has a great melody for the singers.

Tool – right behind Rush as my favourite progressive rock band. Who doesn’t want to sing like Maynard?!?! Though, additionally, I want to drum like Danny Carey.

46x2 – finally the bass player will feel like he’s in the spotlight.

The Pot – one of my personal favs from Tool.

The Grudge – read the same as The Pot. The drumming in this song is particularly amazing! I particularly like how all 4 of the instruments copy themes off of each other throughout the song.

Lateralus – title song their 4th album…rocks hard and long. It has many changes throughout.

Jambi – just listen to the first 30 seconds of this song and tell me it wouldn’t be hard as heck on Rock Band.

Led Zeppelin – the band that got me started playing guitar for real. I’ve heard rumors Harmonix is bringing the big “led balloon” to Rock Band. Here are my song suggestions.

Rock & Roll – who doesn’t love that Big Rock Ending at the end of this song? Drums are amazing overall for this song.

The Song Remains the Same – has a killer vocal part. The guitar is fast and frenzied.

Ramble On – that bass line is soooooo smooooooth!

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp – Oh, come on!!! How much fun would this song be??!!

Over the Hills & Far Away – I love to play this song’s opening lick on guitar.

The Ocean – my favourite song off of Houses for the Holy. So much fun!!!

Dazed & Confused – oh, yeah. Don’t deny it. You know you want it! The way the bass and drums play off of each other during Jimmy’s long guitar solo…brilliant!!!

How Many More Times – more fun than Dazed & Confused? You be the judge.

What Is & What Should Never Be – awesome bass line! Fun to sing.

Bring It On Home – starts slow and bluesy, but tears it open after a couple minutes.

Since I’ve Been Loving You – another blues based song. Starts with an awesome guitar solo and gets better from there. The drums near the end are awesome!

Ten Years Gone – oh, how long I’ve loved this song…longer than 10 years, for sure.

Runners-Up Bands:

311 – they have great rhythms, fun lyrics, and...oh yeah, “if you want more beats for your buck, there’s no love.”

Rage Against the Machine – these raps are made for a full band, not just a single guitarist!!!

I'm with ya on Zep, tool, and rage.

Any Zep would rock, although Bron-Y-Aur Stomp would be wayyyy too much fun!!!

As for tool, the pot is key...the one I want most...although I could live with just about anything.

Rage, we need the first album. It's their best, and every song would be a blast to play. If not, gimme Freedom and I'll be happy as a pig in ....
