View Full Version : Don't want to buy Smash hits, but...

As much as I now despise the Guitar Hero series, I have to admit that I am seriously considering the purchase of Smash Hits. With the current line up of songs, it makes me pretty nostalgic to the days before Rock Band. I miss playing the original GH1&2 songs, and to have the best of them together on 1 disc is pretty tempting. I'm hoping for RB dlc to combat this problem, but doesn't look too likely :(

Yeah, what Flawless said. I'll buy it day one. GH or not, good music is good music (even on a crappy game). Metallica kicked butt, so will the Smash hits. Smash hits will probably be better actually other then no Mercyful Fate.

I doubt we'll be able to convince you one way or the other...the only way you'll apparently learn is to buy it, be disappointed, and then come back to RB later on.

There are definately some great songs on the setlist. But I will not be buying this simply because I have faith in the DLC that RB will provide.
On a side bar (sorry to hijack the thread) but I am sensing the banhammer coming to whoever keeps tagging "Edited@6:66"... OCD much?

With all of the deals I've seen for GH:WT, I suspect that GH:Smash Hits will see some discounts pretty quickly. When it drops down to $40, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. And I can't stand what Guitar Hero has become, either.

Even though I know I'll get it, I can't disagree with you at all. I've only played the GH:M a few hours total. RB will ALWAYS be #1.

If Neversoft would allow their songs to be transferable to other GH versions, this game would be COMPLETELY superfluous.
So, if you want to reward Neversoft for getting you to buy the same songs over again, then that's your decision.
Why should we care if they've suckered you?

In all fairness, they are adding in the other instruments. So it's not something that you've had before.
Personally, even though I like a lot of the songs, I don't like the game engine/charting/graphics/etc of GH, so I won't be buying it.

I could see people wanting to rebuy songs for drums and singing... except that the singing engine is notoriously lame/broken as GH:Metallica showed us.
So that leaves drums. And since a majority of the setlist is guitar weighted, how many of these will have great drum tracks?
Combined with the perponderance of shared songs, and potential for future RB DLC, I don't see a compelling case for purchase. It's not like GH1, 2, 3, and 80's discs just stopped working over night. And it's not like they're offering sufficient value compared to other disc games which have far larger numbers of songs.
To put it further in perspective, I would pay for 10 to 12 songs on the disc. The rest are rubbish or disinteresting to me. That's 5 to 6 dollars a song. In Rock Band DLC world, I can spend less, buy exactly what I want, and it integrates with my existing stuff. So to me personally I just don't see the value.

I like both franchises, but I'll rent SH.

I don't really care much for SH for the singing or drums anyway. I have both GH1 & 2 so I'll stick it when I want to go old school in a couple of hours on my PS2 :p

I liked the idea at first, but there are soo many songs that need to be on the game that should be considered "Smash hits" but just are not on there.
Seriously no Iron Man? No Ziggy Stardust? No Sharp Dressed Man? No Texas Flood? No Frankenstein? Also what the hell? We got a butchered version of Spanish Castle Magic in Guitar Hero and with their new Jimi Hendrix deal they have been taunting they don't even bother bringing it back with the full real version? Stupid.
The Guitar Hero II set list is slightly better but still missing a few songs I really wanted to play again like Dead!(song sucks but it was so damn fun to play), Last Child, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sweet Child O' Mine(I know why this isn't there), and Bad Reputation.
The list hasn't been officially revealed but if the leaked set list ends up being true(so far it has) then the GH3, 80s, and Aerosmith picks are just awful, seriously they pick one Aerosmith song and they pick Back in the Saddle? This is supposed to be a greatest hits! Why did you pick that over Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, Ragdoll, love in an Elevator or even Dream On? THOSE are greatest Hits! and I have been wanting to play Holy Diver and I Ran from the 80s for ever now, WHERE THE FUDGE ARE THEY?!
I really liked this idea but the setlist is just pathetic and they need to do a better job next time, I don't care if there are covers on there, I would rather have covers than not have the song at all and for me playing the song and having fun is more important not listening to it.
Sorry for this rant, you can go ahead and disagree with me, hate on me, and say my opinion sucks.

Except Obama. I will only get Smash Hits if it fully compatible with my wii rock band instruments.

So, I guess that means you won't be getting it.
One thing about SH - were some of the tracks cover tunes in GH 1/2/etc? THe big draw beyond full band play on this is that every track on SH will be a master recording this time.
While much talked about issues w/ master tapes (# of the Beast) are why RB had cover tunes for Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills & # of the Beast, SH has The Trooper (master recording). So, HMX......how 'bout some Piece of Mind era Maiden then?
Would love to have Trooper, Die w/ your Boots On & Flight of Icarus in RB.

Ok, I didn't realize this game was basically an expansion pack to GHWT. My bad.
So why not sell it as DLC? Why make people buy every song?
They want to grab more of your cash by paying for every track, that's why.
Just awful.

It is worth noting that the GH1 and GH80s discs are PS2-exclusive. So there's that.
