View Full Version : Uh-Oh! Nintendo! GTA: Chinatown Wars a flop.

Only about 80k copies sold when 200k-400k was expected. Sales poor despite a 94% Metacritic rating - the highest for any DS game to date.

Not surprised. Most people that want to play M rated games have PS3s or 360s.

This.

People now have M3, R4, stuff like that.

People are stupid. If they keep pirating games, then there won't be any more games to pirate due to poor sales. And as fans of Rock Band, imagine how pissed off we'd be if someone here admitted that they had a copy.

R4 etc are supposed to be for backing up your own games so you don't have to carrry around a bunch of cartridges, and for homebrew. I hate when things like that are abused.

The manager of my mall's EB Games says they have HUNDREDS of copies sitting in the back, as they expected the game to sell much, much more than it did. Kind of funny and sad at the same time.

He actually compared the sales to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, heh

My girlfriend bought the game, she's a GTA nut. I played it. The game is a lot more fun that you'd think it would be. It really brings me back to the old PS1 GTA days.

People who own a DS (or Wii) are probably more into family type games, and people who see GTA on the DS probably think it sucks.

I'm not surprised, really. The DS market is different from the PS3/360 market.

I own quite a few DS games. In fact, I own more games on the DS than any of my consoles. But I have no interest in this game. I don't know many DS owners who are interested.

Whatever. I bought my copy and I love it. I will admit that when I heard it would be on the DS, I thought it was going to suck.

I thought previous sales showed Japanese gamers weren't so much into the Grand Theft Auto series?

I read that most best-selling DS games have crappy opening sales but start to get really profitable after a few months.

Let's see... bad economy... M rated game on a handheld sytem that's marketed for a more casual crowd.... yeah, I'm not that surprised that it isn't selling that well.

To be honest, I'd be more interested in it if the multiplayer modes were more substantial. I heard they only support two players at max

At the risk of starting a war, as GH:A considered a flop?

At the risk of starting a war, as GH:A considered a flop?Yah GH:A was a fail they made too many. Notice the GH:A price tag of $10 now. They thought it would have the amount of sales GH:3 had.

They knew it was going to flop before it came out. Gamestop had a promotion for their employees. The top 10 stores in the country for reserves that got picked up won free GTA: CW edition DS's for all the store's employees. If Gamestop feels they have to persuade you THAT heavily to get people to reserve something, they definitely had the premonition that this was NOT going to sell well.

I hope this kills the series.

I really wouldn't have thought so from all the press that the game outsold every Aerosmith album, or something to that effect, but my friend the EB manager mentioned that they had stockpiles of the guitar bundle in the back of his store for months and months, and only when they slashed the price did they start to get rid of them.

I read that most best-selling DS games have crappy opening sales but start to get really profitable after a few months.

From Kotaku:

"Remember that many games for Nintendo DS have a nontraditional sales pattern," said Denise Kaigler, Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs. "The trend is toward ‘evergreen' games that sell well over an extended period of time instead of in a one-month spike. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for Nintendo DS is a good example. In its first month (November 2007), it sold only 36,000. To date, it has sold through nearly 500,000. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a great game that has received tremendous reviews. We expect that with continued backing, it will follow the same long-tail/evergreen sales route that other top sellers have taken."

**************

I mean, even in my own personal experience, unless I think the game is going to be a limited run (Electroplankton, Phoenix Wright), I normally wait a few months before buying any DS game. I have more games for the DS (20-something) than any other system except my NES (50). I don't know why that is, but when it comes to consoles I usually get games I want on day one and the DS games just wait.

We'll see on the sales patterns of Chinatown Wars, but it was pretty much a known quantity when it came out (unlike the referenced DS CoD game). I'll watch it the next couple of months, I'm sure, but this game doesn't seem to have much in terms of legs.

I was going to buy it, but...I hated the top down gameplay of the old ones, there, I said it, are you happy, RB forums? Are you happy!?
