I have a good time singing so I spent a great deal of time singing on Online Quickplay today. I noticed there's not a lot of other singers out there, though. Only once did I join a band where there was a singer and I noticed I could not hear him, just the original vocals. Is that how it always is? If so, that's pretty weak; I think it would be awesome to hear your online bandmate singing and not the same **** your used to.

The vocalist gets to determine whether or not you hear him/her.
You have to hold one of the trigger buttons down while singing if you want the rest of your bandmates on the Quickplay Online mode to hear.

This only works on the 360.

Wrong. It works on the PS3, too. I've done it. Where'd you get that from?
P.S. I'm up to number 3 on the vocals leaderboard. W00t, etc.

Note that if you do this, your bandmates will hear your voice slightly lagged from the song, even if no one notices the lag in playing their part because of HMX's lagless system.

So you just hold R2 on the PS3? Because I had no idea.

I had wondered about this, too. I sure hope more singers will choose to "pull the trigger". I've definitely missed hearing their contribution. Even if they suck. It would really add to the experience to hear the real singer rather than the same old same old.
So come on folks!! Let's hear it!!

How is this done on the PS3 as the vocalist?
And if I'm not the vocalist, do I need a headset to hear the singing or would it come through the TV?
Honestly, I would think that listening to the vocalist would be distracting for the other players.

Erm... unless you know some magic trick, this does not work on the PS3.
I have personally tested and verified this with my three other friends that I play daily with since release. Holding R2/L2 puts an icon up there in the vocals section, but they have never been able to hear me for any type of voice chat and/or singing.
So if you know some trick, I'd love to hear it, but there are numerous threads stating as such on the boards.
The only reason it works on the 360 is because it's a built-in standard for XBLA. There is no such standard on the PSTriple, and Harmonix did not add this as a feature for the platform...
I have asked the HMX crew what that icon is that pops up when you hold the triggers down on the PS3, but have yet to receive a response (they may be busy with more important things LOL).

I've avoided hitting the trigger so far because I would feel guilty that I could talk but no one else could. Plus I have a tendency to yak too much, and there's also the delay issue. Actually, now I'm hearing that it doesn't work. Too bad, really.

Wouldn't it be a lag fest though if you allowed others to hear you sing? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to try this, but I don't want to mess up others with being off beat.

It depends on everyone's settings. Some guys have said I sound in time with the music, some have said I lagged a bit.

yea, I bought Rock Band the first night it came out, and was probably one of the first ones to be coersed (sp?) into finding this. The band I played with online's first words were "WTF, I can't hear you???", and then one of the guys said "I got an idea.....hold down the chat button on the controller while you sing". 90% of the time I'm about half a beat behind the actual song for them, but they can hear me.
I do understand for lag resistance why they didn't add this in for everyone to hear....BUT...it REALLY should be an option to set for online games where if the player WANTS to hear the person sing along they can. The singer adds GREAT depth to the experience, especially online when they are calling out to the band, and edging them on to do great...so I'm really surprised that they didn't add this as a feature. I hope this is the 2nd thing they are working on adding along with Online BWT.

We tried it last night with a three person group, and the lag completely threw me off. His voice was coming in half a beat behind. That's acceptable for Creep, but not Sabotage. We made him turn it off, except when he wanted to say something funny between the verses.

That's exactly the kind of thing I was talking about! I would LOVE to hear somebody do that song! I'd probably be laughing so hard I'd fail the song, but it'd be FUN. And that's why I play video games.
If the lag is too bad (as some have suggested) then I agree that it would be more annoying than cool. Chances are that lag is determined by each members connection though, no? So with one group you might have horrible lag, but with another it might be fine?
Anyone?..... Anyone?..... Bueller?.....

Personally, I love "pulling the trigger" and I love singing online. But for most bands, pulling the trigger is not an option because the lag makes the game harder for them to play. For the few that it works fine or they don't care it's a delight. For the others, well... *shrug*
I do know I frequently get bored singing when the other bandmates don't communicate, don't chat, and, well, don't compliment my 95%-100% Hard vocals :) Since you can't really peform like the others in the band can audibly, any feedback to make your singer feel welcome and part of the band is helpful! We're not just score addition monkeys.

PULL THE TRIGGER AND WAIL....Put out those POWER VOCALS! Just have a good connection....That will help with LAG. Just make sure your band mates mute their headsets as you get some funky reverb and feedback if they are blasting their stereo's or TV's.
In the end it's about a GOOD TIME...With sucky hardware....;)

I hate to bump this, but this seems to be the only thread mentioning it.
PS3 vocals are NOT played over Online, even IF you hold down the shoulder buttons. I tried it with my friends. Do I need to turn up my vocal sounds to hear them? I've seen a couple people say they can hear it, but I'm sure you're just idiots not seeing that it's a PS3 issue.
It's little things like this that make me wish for a patch, instead of weekly DLC. I'd trade a week or two or songs just to have this stuff worked out.

Yeah whats not being made clear is that you aren't 'opting to let them hear you while you sing' you're just broadcasting (with lag) over the voice chat channel just like any other band member saying something. It sounds just as bad and down-sampled as the rest of the chatting.
If anybody does this when I play I'm rarely in the mood I usually just take my headset off. Its too distracting to try to play drums while I'm hearing the lyrics 1.5 seconds behind.

If holding down the trigger is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

LOL, why can I not find a straight answer on this? So it absolutely doesn't work? Or it will but only those wearing headsets will be able to hear you? I've played countless games online using the guitar - and never heard one person. I've also sung online countless times, used the shoulder button - and never had one person say they can hear me. What gives?

...if I could!
After my first day or so of singing online, I started to realize/assume people on the other end were only hearing the recorded track. Came here to find the answer to that.
I don't think I want to 'pull the trigger' and subject people to a scratchy, mixed-down, and delayed audio annoyance if all it does is turn on the voice chat. I'm guessing no band mate I team up with will want that distraction.
On the other hand, it may be for the best if no one hears how I turn on 'overdrive' ;) Is there a poll thread in this forum asking singers what they do for overdrive? I've already noticed a lot of folks say "woo!", but I'm also betting I'm not the only one who says:
"Byahhhh!"
"Unf!"
"Meow!"
"*monkey noises*"
On many occasions I just burp.
