View Full Version : How about a K-On! topic?

Well, since there's at least one other person here that seems to have a K-On! avatar, I think it might be a good idea to have a topic to talk about this anime.

The anime itself is fairly simple. It's a slice of life show which heavily relies on moe. Four highschool freshmen girls make up the light music club. They play instruments and what have you even if it isn't the entire main focus of the show. Yui plays the guitar, Mio plays the bass, Mugi plays the keyboards, and Ritsu is the drummer.

I'm leaving some things out since I feel like it.

I like the main four gals so far. I obviously like Mio the best since she's my avatar and whatnot. The one I like least is Yui since I don't like that she's dumb or whatever you want to call it. Mugi is mu second favorite with Ritsu in third. Right now I'm not looking for much in this show since I know not to really expect that out of slice of life. I'm here for the characters since they've drawn me in, even if they can be called archetypes.

Though thinking about it now, there's not a whole lot that can go on in this topic. Oh well.

I approve of this topic because K-ON is awesome. It is not deep or meaningful but it is one of the most straight up entertaining shows this season IMO. I just downloaded episode 4 last night so I can not wait to see it!

Mio is love!

You rang? :D

K-On is awesome. I seem to gravitate toward shows and movies that feature bands (doesn't have to be rock bands - I watched the live action TV show of Nodame Cantabile and that features an orchestra) and this is definitely one of the best.

Mio FTW.

So what has been y'alls favorite scene so far in the show? One that just had you in stitches. I loved the part where Yui is supposed to be studying but she keeps practicing the guitar instead. Every time it showed her on her bed with that dumb grin on her face strumming the guitar I was rolling on the ground laughing.

You rang? :D

Pretty much.

One of my favorite scenes so far had to be from the latest episode where Sawako was going through all of those obstacles to get to the club room. The way they did it so over-the-top was hilarious.

And it seems that all three of us like Mio the best. Interesting.

Everyone like Mio the best, she is the most moe character. Her perfect combination of cuteness and seriousness is just way charming.

To be honest, I mainly like her the best because of the ending. If it wasn't for that, Mugi probably would be my favorite.

The episode my avatar is from (last week's episode) had me amused. I thought Mio's irrational fear of barnacles was pretty cute.

Okay so after seeing the latest episode I love Sawako-sensei now (Mio is still the best). The scene when her and Yui returned from their special training was so epic. Also OMG it looks like we are coming up on the school festival, promises to be hilarious with Mio being essentially forced to sing. I can not wait for the next episode!

Only thing I do not like about the show so far is that Yui is picking up the guitar at a ridiculous and borderline completely unbelievable rate. I guess they have to do that for the sake of the plot, but if her fingers are not even completely hardened yet she should not already be at the level of playing some of the licks she was doing in this episode. I forgive this inconsistancy because the show is otherwise awesome but it bothers me every time she starts playing.

Well, given that we're breezing through the school year with the show, I'm not too surprised. I don't know what exact time I'd put it at, but I think Yui has had about three months or more of practicing. Given that she seems to be practicing quite a lot and probably not doing much else, I'd say it's fair. What we really is for Ritsu to start writing lyrics so that they can be compared to another band with a successful drummer/lyricist.

Y'know, why stop there? Why not make them a full on Rush cover band? I think Mio might be able to hit Geddy's notes...

But Rush does not have a keyboardist do they? So they would have to fire Mugi!

Also I doubt that Ritsu would write lyrics like Neil Peart lol, I can just imagine her songs right now. She would write songs about barnacles and peeling skin just to freak out Mio.

Anyway you have a point that time might be passing faster than I assume but they are not giving us any indication of what kinds of time skips are happening so from the viewer's perspective it looks like Yui is picking up the guitar at supergenius level (haha probably the only time that word will ever be used to describe her). *Shrug* like I said not a big deal it is just a Fridge Logic (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FridgeLogic) issue.

Geddy plays the keyboard as well as bass so it works perfectly~

This show is one of the better ones this season~ I still have to say the best is Eden of the East though~

I was also really caught off guard by the insane guitar playing of Yui~ but I realized from what you guys have already said, it would be likely to happen since we don't really know how much time has passed.

Eden of the East is very good, I just saw the episode last night where Takizawa met with the doctor, the show is really interesting so far. I can not decide between it and K-On, they are too different, it is like comparing apples and... steak.

So it's kinda like Beck but not as good?

Well let me see what I can manage up then...

When Yui first joins the club there is one week until the end of April. I assume she gets the guitar within two or three weeks of joining, so that'd place the time at mid April. They go on a training mission over Summer break. So I think that puts ep 5 around early August?

So three months give or take? Doesn't seem to be all that bad.

So it's kinda like Beck but not as good?

More like it is slice of life with cutesy girls with a dash of the band aspect thrown in.

Mmm no, it is not like Beck, they really do not have anything in common except for the music thing. Beck is a serious show (with some comedy) about a band forming and going through their own dramas and such. K-On is more like a comedy about a group of friends who just happen to be starting a band, they could be doing almost anything else really and it would not change much. In Beck the focus is on the band and the main character's drama, in K-On the focus is on the group of friends interacting in hilarious ways. It is not as good as Beck though you are right about that, but anyone who thought it would be has their expectations way too high, it is a high school comedy anime.

I watched the new episode last night and I must say that it was entertaining. Mio was the focus and it dealt with her getting over stage fright in order to sing. The resulting outcome is a pretty interesting song with a music video! Also of note is that in the show she even has a fan club now!

...Well, for all the wrong reasons it seems.

I also loved the Yui and Ritsu sumo wrestling scene. That was just too great.

I have not seen the episode yet but I am excited to, hopefully in the next day or two. I can not wait for singing Mio.

Oh my god K-ON! is awesomesauce. Mio is cool, the teacher came in a close second with the fifth episode. This can easily be one of the best animes of the season. It could even surpass the awesomeness that was Haruhi and Lucky Star.

I wish we could have actually seen them play live instead of it being a music video.

Have not seen Ep 6 or 7 yet~

Haha this thread is like herpes. Just when you think it is gone, BAM another outbreak hits in the form of a new episode. I have downloaded the recent episode but not watched it yet, will do so this weekend, it's on my list right before the newest Eden of the East.
