View Full Version : Speck broke my G-String! (Yeah, the band that plays Conventional Lover)

I demand compensation HMX. :p
Just kidding. Does anybody know how to fix a guitar string? I have a replacement and a youtube video... But I can't get the string the right way.
It's an electric, Strat look-alike... I'm having a problem with the string at the bottom of the guitar.. It bends out over the saddle, and doesn't fit properly. I have the right string (at least, I think I do. I got a replacement G-string (and yeah, that's which string broke), but there might be other things I don't know about strings?).
So can anyone help me?
And for the story... I was trying to learn Conventional Lover on my electric guitar, it's a lot of help with my barre chords.. And as I was trying to figure out the second solo, bloop. My g-string just snapped. I put down my guitar, and didn't pick it up for a while.. Eventually I started playing it around the missing string (and even learned a song without needed to use it!), but it just wasn't the same. Eventually, my dad decided to get me a replacement string, and since neither of us knows a whole lot about guitars, we could have been missing vital information about the guitar/string.
I don't know. Help please? :p :)

Can't fit string over 'saddle' at the bottom of the guitar. (away from neck/head)

Oh... I'm too late. Oh well.
Mine's an acoustic so it does connect a bit different at the bottom for the strings, but ultimately it's the same. Hey, Oak Tea, do you have a string winder? If you don't, buy one. It's a couple of bucks and makes it easier to put on strings next time.

To be honest, I've never replaced a guitar string either... I had a friends dad do it. I need to learn to do it, honestly.
Was it relatively easy? I'm thinking about just replacing all the strings.

Well you have to replace all the strings. They will stretch for a few days so don't worry about them being out of tune, but yeah for future reference.

Ahaha, thanks for being the first poster to actually comment on the string. ;) What does a string winder do? I don't think I did the right thing with the string on the top end.. After I tuned the string, I took the extra slack and stuck it back through the other end of the tuning thing so it isn't hanging out. It plays perfectly, and I plan on taking it out before retuning the string, but I don't know if that's bad for anything.

It was relatively easy, once you figure out what you're supposed to do. I was frustrated because it seemed the string was too loose at the bottom end, and I didn't want to start tuning the string because I thought the string wasn't on the guitar properly. Don't worry about that, as long as it's over the 'saddle' thingy, it'll be fine when you start to tighten/tune it. There's slack there for a reason as I discovered. :)
I also read on a site that you shouldn't remove all six strings from a guitar at once.. The tension of the strings apparently holds some guitars together, so just do one at a time. :)

The tension of the strings has some effect on the neck. That's why you'll notice, if one of your strings breaks, the rest will go flat.
Changing strings really isn't too tricky once you do it once. You basically just do exactly what you think you'd do.
Also, if the string winder that the above poster was referring to is the same thing I'm thinking of, it's just a crank that you put over each tuning peg that allows you to turn it much more quickly and efficiently when you're changing strings.

Did you break the G-string fingering A minor? ;)
Anyway, restringing isn't that hard. It's pretty self-explanatory, I taught myself to do it in about a minute or so.

You take the string out and put a new one in, it's not that hard. All's you have to do on a Strat is loosen the tuner peg until the string is out on the neck, flip the guitar over and take off the plate on the back of the guitar body and pull the string out through there. Install the new string the same way as you took it out. When putting it through the tuner peg, put your pointer finger on the first fret of the guitar to keep the string in place while you tighten the peg. If you don't the string will keep popping out. For a Strat, changing the strings is pretty easy, guitars with floating bridges, that's another story.

For the record, it's not mine. It's one of the oldest guitar jokes in the book.

Yeah, I've heard that one a lot. All the noobs on guitar never heard that before so they think it's amazing.
