View Full Version : Which songs have you “discovered” because of Rock Band?

I’m sure many of you did not know some (or many) of the songs featured in this game. So here is the list of songs I had never heard but I absolutely love now.
1. Cherub Rock
2. Don’t Fear the Reaper
3. Orange Crush
4. Vasoline
5. Should I Stay or Should I Go.
There were other unknown songs to me which I liked and others I did not. So which songs did you “discover” because of Rock Band?
Overall I think HMX did an excellent job selecting the songs. It's too bad the DLC will be mostly $2.00 per song. At that price point I will not venture to buy songs I don’t know, so there will not be anymore “discovering” done by me.

Just a thought, but could you not 'Youtube' the DLC and use that as a guage as to whether to spend your cash on it.

I knew of Deep Purple before the game, but not until I played Highway Star a couple of times did I really learn to love them. Rock Band also turned me on to The Outlaws, what an amazing band.

$2.00 per song isn't that bad when you consider your getting code/charts for 3 different instruments and the the lyrical chart. You're also paying artist rights, as well as paying Harmonix for taking the time to make the song(s). If you look at it this way, the money is spread pretty thin.

Same here. I freaking love them now. Never heard of 'em before Rock Band, though.

I only knew about half the songs in the setlist, actually. Most of the stuff from the 90s and 00s I knew, but other than that, I'd never heard most of the songs. Or maybe I'd heard them but didn't know them very well, like Highway Star.

When I first heard Joker & the Thief during a car commercial, I went totally nuts for it! I was disappointed that they instead had Woman in GH3, but you can imagine my joy and surprise when I found out you could download Joker & the Thief for Rock Band ^_~ Now all I need is to find out how to put cash on my account =/

Yes. I could youtube the songs. But you see you learn to love a song by hearing it repeatedly. Some songs you like and some you don’t, but it is a very rare occasion when you like a song the first time you hear it. For example I youtubed all the songs in the game before the game was released and I seriously considered retiring my pre-purchase. Now I love many of them, though there are still some I just don’t like.

In terms of the money spent by HMX/MTV/EA to rockbandize a song, $2.00 might or might not be reasonable. We’ll never know, but it will definitely depend on the Rock Band install base. From my individual standpoint as a consumer however, $2.00 is too much money for a song I’ve never heard.

A couple of songs I had never heard but I love now are
Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria
Epic - Faith No More
Roxanne - The Police
I'm So Sick - Flyleaf
Those are the ones that stand out the most...I had heard most others, but there were some other ones in there that garnered my attention.

Same here, for the most part. (Kind of annoying that most of the songs I didn't know are the hardest ones, though.. ;P )
Songs I discovered for the first time and really love now:
Flyleaf - I'm So Sick
The Killers - When You Were Young
The Strokes - Reptilia
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
(I'm so not indie. :S )
Also happy to have RHCP's Dani California in the game, which I had heard on the radio once and had no idea what it was called.. :p
Adding: As a long-time Coheed & Cambria fan, I'm so glad "Welcome Home" is in the game and is introducing so many people to the band. :D It's one of my favorite tracks of theirs anyway, hands-down.

I'd heard most of the songs on the tracklist, but hadn't really listened carefully to them until they were announced for Rock Band, and many of them I came to love because of that, such as:
Won't Get Fooled Again
Dani California
Suffragette City
Highway Star
Gimme Shelter
I think the only song that I never heard prior to it being announced, that I now love is Welcome Home.

I knew pretty much all the main setlist songs, but there were some I was definitely unfamiliar with moreso than other songs. "Epic" was one of them - I'd hear it before, but only parts of it, not the entire song.
Prior to song suggestions for this game, I'd never heard of "Highway Star," but as part of educating myself about all the songs in this game, I downloaded it and listened to it. I think it became one of my favorite songs over the summer, so now that the game has been released, I am fully aware of how much it rocks.

You ever eat at McDonalds? Maybe buy some popcorn with movies you rent at Blockbuster? Skip those once a week and you've basically paid for a song. In the case of McDonald's you can afford the pack depending on what you buy at McDonalds. Since they are keeping the number of songs to around 3 per week, for me to come up with 5.50 isn't that big a deal. I just don't go to lunch one day a week while at work and that justifies it for me.
Songs I found I really liked:
Moonage Daydream & Suffragette City
When You Were Young
Orange Crush (right now my favorite to play)
Joker and the Thief
Wasn't ever a big Bowie fan before this game. Now getting the Ziggy Stardust CD to hear the rest of the songs.

I don't even have the game yet. I've bought quite a few tracks for my ipod and haven't found one I don't like. That's what I love about these types of games, they really open you up to music you may never have heard if they didn't appear in rythmn games.
Slightly OT I know but I'd never heard of Matthew Sweet before GH2. I know a lot of people didn't like that track, but I've bought quite a bit of his stuff as a result - this is why I find it baffling the likes of Zep, AC/DC, U2 and the Beatles (or their respective record companies in some cases) don't allow their songs in. HMX must have proof that bands sales increase after appearing in GH/RB?

This is actually one of the best things about the game -- until you actually play them, you don't have nearly as much respect for the song.
Part of it comes from understanding and hearing the lyrics; normally I don't pay enough attention or I didn't know the lyrics because I hadn't heard the song enough.
Good examples: "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden and "Won't get fooled again" by The Who. I had heard both before (quite some time ago) but it wasn't until I sang them that I really appreciated what the artist was trying to convey.
I'm also suddenly a fan of The Killers, Jet, and The Strokes. I've found myself downloading songs from iTunes that I can play on Rock Band because I like them so much (Tom Sawyer, Run to the Hills, etc). This game is bringing out the music fan in me.

Thats what I'm saying.....For people who bought this game to not know some of the songs mentioned in this thread is very surprising. STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, the Clash, REM............I guess we've got some really really young people or really really old people on here. The only song I had never heard on the main setlist was Green Grass and High Tides. I had heard of the Outlaws but never heard this song.
I'm 34 btw just to define what really really young or really really old would be in my book....

Exactly! I'm 31 and I had at least heard of all of the songs on the main set list, knew most of them very very well, but only a few on the Bonus list. (Timmy I knew from South Park, and my band opened up for Flyleaf earlier this year, so of course I knew of So Sick)
I'd love to know how young/old some of you are to never have heard Epic before, or Vasoline or Orange Crush...I hate REM but I'd at least heard that song on the radio a billion times :)
And Don't Fear the Reaper? Wow! c'mon...
I've got a fever, and the only prescription...is MORE COWBELL!
If you've never seen the More Cowbell skit, you really have to go watch it. Here:

There are many songs in the game that I didn't think I would like, but I now do. Not sure how I would like them just on the radio, but they are all fun to play along with. I didn't think that the bonus songs would be good, but every song in the game I like.

Lol at that Cowbell Skit.
And Yeah some of these songs I can't believe some of you never heard. I'm 37, so I guess it's an age thing.
Personally I never heard of Coheed and Cambria. Liked the song. Dug the info on the loading screen about each CD telling one Epic tale. So I just bought their first CD, even though I wanted the one with Welcome Home.
Simply because if it tells a story I wanted to start from the beginning.
Also Flyleaf I've heard 2-3 songs on the radio, and am planning on picking up their CD.
Never heard Maps Yeah, Yeahs. Wife loves them now.
Oh, and I never thought much about Boston. But, they're some pretty badass musicians. I love Foreplay/Longtime. I never cared when I'd hear them playing on the radio, etc.

It may not even be that they haven't heard the songs or musicians before but didn't fully appreciate the music. That's what it was like for me and Orange Crush. Until playing it and listening to it that closely I had never really appreciated what they were trying to do in that song.
Plus, I don't really listen to radio anymore. I have XM satellite radio and listen to elecrtonica/house/dance music mostly. Then I just look to other places for inspiration on what cd's to buy for my ipod (like Rock Band).
One last things, peoples tastes change. I remember as a kid I despised R.E.M., Depeche Mode and Violent Femmes... just didn't like their music. Now I enjoy all 3. But it was until I reheard some of these songs years later that I realized I enjoyed them now.

So far, I haven't really discovered any new bands that are really getting me stoked.
But, then again, I knew 35 of the main tracks before ever playing it. It's part of the reason I was looking forward to this so much--of the 35 I knew, there were 30 that I really liked and wanted to play. A much higher number than on any previous guitar-oriented game.
EDIT: I also am 46, and Sabotage was one of the songs I was most looking forward to. Anyone who wonders what the big deal with it is should track down the video, because it really brings the experience...well...it lets you look at it from...um...
Okay, the video doesn't relate too well to the song itself, but it's still the screaming awesome.

For the record I am 30 years old. But you see I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where I still live. As a kid/teenager I listened to a lot of American music, Guns ‘N Roses being my favorite. But as I’ve grown older I’ve cut all my ties with the media. I don’t watch TV or listen to radio anymore. (My TV is only for video games and rented DVD’s, and I listen to audiobooks on my way to work.) So that is why I did not know many of the songs.
I knew R.E.M for loosing my religion and STP for Plush, but neither was included in the game. And many other bands I had heard of, but I did not know their songs.

''Heroes'' - David Bowie (and it was a cover, lol)
''Maps'' - Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs

The only one I didn't know on the main setlist was GG&HT, because I never really bothered listening to Outlaw. In terms of downloads, the only one I didn't know that I ended up loving was Bowie's Moonage.
Now, if you ask which songs I learned to appreciate thanks to Rock Band, then I'll mention Foreplay/Long Time. I'd heard it a million times, but until I played it, I never cared for it much at all. Same thing with More Than a Feeling off of GH1.
And chalk me up as another who's amazed by some of the songs folks here had never heard.

In defense of the radioless (I'm one of them, by the by), when commercial radio is nothing but.. well, commercials, and satellite radio is still WTF expensive, plugging into your MP3 or CD player is a guaranteed source of a good listening experience. I haven't listened to the radio regularly in 9 years or so. (For the record, I'll be 27 in a month, and I had heard most of the older songs on the main setlist before.)
Which is why I love games like this, or Guitar Hero, or even DDR... I get introduced to a lot of great music, in addition to finding new appreciation for things I passed over before (like... years ago I would have never thought Boston was awesome ;) ) and having fun rocking out to the songs I know and love already.
Looking at this thread, though, I agree with what an earlier poster said: classic bands are missing out on a golden opportunity to find new listeners...

Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
I've heard some of their stuff before, but this is the first song I've heard by them that's made me want to go out and get any of their albums. Love it.
The Killers - When You Were Young
I have their first album, but I didn't really like the sound of anything off of Sam's Town (think that's the album name). Now this is one of my favorite songs to play.
To address those who don't listen to the radio (myself included), check out www.Pandora.com, found a ton of new stuff that you'll never hear on the radio and you can cater it to your tastes.
For those who are just now discovering Bowie. Pick up "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". You'll thank me.

I'm So Sick
Time We Had
I had never heard of either of those two, love em both now.
Some songs I knew but didn't fully appreciate:
Suffragette City
Maps
I have to say though. I absolutely LOATHE that Crooked X song. It's like daggers in my ears!

Suffragette City and I'm So Sick. I vaguely knew both before playing the game, but it wasn't until playing that I fully began to appreciate them. Especially I'm So Sick--I always thought I hated Flyleaf, heh.

I don't even have the game yet, and have been turned on to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs because of Rock Band. I've watched Azuritereaction's video of him drumming the song on expert like 15 times. Can't wait to try it out.
only the New Pornographers song, The Electric Version. Awesome song, great album. great band.
Yurray for you. Go see them live if you ever get a chance. Always a good show.

For me the 2 songs that I had never really heard before that I now love are Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria and When You Were Young - The Killers.
I had heard one song by Coheed and Cambria on the radio once and i hated the singer's voice. When Welcome Home came up in a setlist for the first time, I said to my wife before it started " Oh I f**king hate these guys." By the end of the song we were both ready to go and buy an album. That is one bad ass song.
Also a big fan of highway star now, where as before I had only heard it a few times and never really "liked" it.
This is why I like the random/preset setlists so much. When i play guitar hero, I just go down the list and pick from the 10 - 15 songs I really like every time and never really branch out. (I didn't even notice When You Were Young was on GH3 until I put it in for the first time since RB came out and saw it on the list) Having the random setlists makes us play so many other songs and I've really come to enjoy the setlist because of it.
Long live Harmonix.

When I first heard Joker & the Thief during a car commercial, I went totally nuts for it! I was disappointed that they instead had Woman in GH3, but you can imagine my joy and surprise when I found out you could download Joker & the Thief for Rock Band ^_~ Now all I need is to find out how to put cash on my account =/
lol. that song is a ***** on expert

I've gotta go the exact opposite route on this one! Run to the Hills is actually the very first song that I remember. My cousin played it right when Number of the Beast came out and I was over at their house, side 2 track 1 (remember when everything wasn't playable without intervention!).
Train Kept a Rollin and the Rockin' Roller Coaster have made my daughter a huge Aerosmith fan.

The only songs I guess you could say I discovered are ones by current bands I've never really heard of (I don't follow current music at all) like Fallout Boy, OK Go etc. Not really a fan of them either but their note charts are allright. All the music from the 90s and before I instantly recognized and knew well...

I've always greatly disliked the Chilli Peppers, so it came as quite a surprise to me that my favorite "new" song in RockBand was Dani California. I drive my wife crazy selecting that song.
The Hives and The Killers (what is with all the "The" bands?) were other bands I enjoyed that I've never heard before. The only "new" DLC song I liked enough to buy was Joker and Theif. Good song, that.
I often find myself wishing Coheed and Cambria had a better lyricist. I loved the song at first, but once I learned the words, it became such a big turn-off.
As for the "haven't you guys ever touched a radio" comments. Not everyone listens to mainstream radio.

I like the Tribe song and the Mother Hips song a lot, had never heard either of them before Rock Band.
The only other unknown song that I really dig is "Welcome Home". I am totally a Coheed & Cambria fanboy now. I'm all wrapped up in this Armory Wars storyline and everything. I love this band.

I'm so glad that someone else feels the same way as I do, I was reading through the first page of post thinking WOW! I must be pretty old (turning 36 this year)....I listen to mostly classic rock and country so for me it was some of the "newer" songs that I didn't know and fell in love with. I'm not too impressed with much of what the current music state is but that aside I love "Creep" which I didn't know before hand and "Welcome Home" by Cambodia or whatever there called:)......Anyhow, I'm thinking that the young people on here are thinking the same thing.....How could he not know these great songs! lol....
That's the great thing about this game, with HMX developers being musicians themselves I'm sure that is exactly what they wanted this game to do....Bring people of all ages to a game and introduce them to music they may of never heard before....HMX can be very proud....Mission Accomplished!

It's definately an age thing. I'm 38 and the only songs that I didn't know at all were the ones in the bonus setlist.
Listening to the raidio is not a thing kids do these days unfortunately.
For those that don't know the classics. Find your local Classics raido station and listen to it for a day. You will hear most of the old songs.

Before Rock Band I had never heard of them. Their drummer is pretty amazing, the beats don't sound tough but after awhile you can hear the complexity in them. Also has anyone ever noticed that after getting Guitar Hero or Rock Band you start hearing all the songs on the radio, like songs you never heard before. I guess it must be that you regognize them.

This is something that really turns my crank (in a good way). I'm 35 and have been playing guitar since I was 13. Music has always been a defining factor of who I am and a really positive influence. Seeing kids playing games like RB and GH, being exposed to and digging on songs that they would never have voluntarily sought out themselves, just warms my heart. I love it.

I may only be 15 but I know what you mean, seeing people develop new tastes from this game is just amazing. Yesterday my 8 year old brother bought Boston's Greatest Hits (I was a total Metalhead until Rockband hit and I'm listening to The Who's Pinball Wizard as we speak)
EDIT: I also discovered Coheed and Cambria and bought "In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3" and "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Vol. 2: No World For Tomorrow". Thank you Harmonix

I'm not too familiar with rock so all of them were new to me. My personal favories are:
Orange Crush
Nightmare

Highway Star
I wish they would come out with Funk DLC.

I'm the opposite of most here in that its the newer stuff I was never exposed to, practically every song from the '00s was new to me.
Of those, I particularly love Dani California. I was always kind of "meh" when it came to the Chilli Peppers, but this song is amazing. I've added it to my regular repertoire on my weekly karaoke night. :)
I also love Outside by the Tribe. Far and away the best of the Indie songs in the game.
