Just thought that I'd let everyone know that I recieved Rock Band today (I live in the UK), and when I tried to play it the screen went black and white (NTSC mode). I have an old SDTV so any HDTVs and newer SDTVs that are compatible with PAL and NTSC should be fine.

If anyone has a solution to this please post it as I am very dissapointed (especially since GH3, which I also imported from the US, plays in full colour).

Thanks.

Well, to be fair, the title of your post is inaccurate. It *is* region free, it just looks like it might not be compatible with PAL. There's a big difference. The game is physically running, it just isn't supporting that output format.

Is there anyone else running Rock Band on a PAL TV? I'm actually really surprised it's not working, since that seems like the kind of thing that would be pretty basic.

yeah, even if a game is region free you need your tv to support NSTC (60 hrtz) so only solution i'm afraid is buy a new tv. it's surprising as all tv's sold in the last few years have pretty much all supported NSTC

I had much the same problem here in Australia with our 3-year old projector until I was able to convince the fiance to upgrade to a new one.

The thread title is incorrect though, the game IS region free on the PS3, you just need a display device that can do NTSC ok.

Phew....!!! The subject title of this post really worried me, as I'm waiting for mine to be shipped from Gamestop any day now!

...can you edit the title of the first post? If so it should be changed to something like 'NTSC region game is black&white on PAL TV'.

I've a cheap 4:3 CRT bought in 1998. It does show NTSC stuff in colour but ONLY if I use a full RGB SCART cable. And ONLY on one of the two SCART sockets. And then I had to go in the TV menus and make sure that socket was set to RGB not SVideo (SCART can carry different signals). And in the PS2 options there's a setting 'RGB' or 'YPBVR' - I had to set that to 'RGB'. I guess the PS3 has a similar setting somewhere for its AV out port.

I've never seen a composite connection (the single yellow phono plug) carry an NTSC signal in colour.

SVideo can sometimes do it, it works on my projector but not the TV. That's with a proper PS2 -> SVideo cable though, no adapter things which can lose part of the signal and degrade it to Composite.

If you're already using a proper PS -> SVideo cable you could check your TV's input settings, there might be a composite/SVideo (YPBVR) switch which could help.
