It looks the same as those dinky karaoke revolution mics
Please tell me that if those are what's available, there is a way i can just jack in my Shure SM58 using a USB converter. Please make that available. Those kinky mics make me feel like Bob Barker, holding it between 2 fingers ;)

They don't look "dinky" at all to me. And i HIGHLY doubt you can plug in any ol' mic into the game and it would work

The mic is pretty heavy duty from what I hear, and it is made to make sure you are hitting the right pitch and saying the right words, which is really cool, and I think it is a little more sophisticated than karaoke revolution, although I have never actually played it.

I'm not questioning the audio quality. It's the heft of the mic and the size. It's the end user experience thing
It's not "any old mic", a Shure SM58 is the most popular handheld mic in the world for rock. It retails at well over $100.

Rock Band is a 'game'. If you want to use your 'well over a $100 dollar' mic then go join a real band ffs.
Rock Band is a 'game', say it out loud, Rock Band is a 'game'. It is not designed to work with real 'guitars', 'drums' or 'Mic's' because Rock Band is a 'game'
Are we getting the whole Rock Band is a 'game' thing yet?

Will the mic be wireless?
Looking at the picture of it on the main page, it does look like it has a wire, its not too clear. Have a look, see what you think.

The mics in the videos have been wired, but I wouldn't put it past them to have both wired and wireless mics. Similar to how they will have wired and wireless guitars.

Well, they said they wanted the peripherals to contain the "rock experience"
And if the mic is as dinky as the KR mics, that does not fill that role. It costs pennies extra to include more plastic for a firm area to grip, and to make it compatible with standard mic clips.
I have my own band thank you.
A wireless mic, one that can achieve the kind of fidelity they said made the XBL mics unqualified would be ludicrously expensive. The mic I have above is $100. The wireless version is $450.
Karaoke rev was headset compatible, but shipped with hand...fingerhelds.

If you check out the Mic they use on the early release video it looks faily big. That might not of course be the final mic, but lets hope so.
