I don't have a PSP, so I don't know all the ins and outs of Remote Play..... but can you connect to your PS3 with it and have your PS3 download content from the Playstation store?

Yes you can. I've done it!

PSP remote play is one of the coolest bonus features I've ever seen on a system, especially since a recent update allows you to turn on your PS3 with your PSP.

Crap, I may need to get a PSP, if only to get those downloads started that much sooner :)

It really is a totally amazing feature. Stream movies and songs from your PS3 to your PSP anywhere in the world, play games on your PS3 from your PSP.... man. Crazy cool.

ooohh...oohh!! I didn't know you could do that? So your saying I can play PSP games on my PS3? I thought this remote play thing was a PS3 to PSP only feature.:o

Sorry sorry sorry.... my wording was unclear. You can play games streamed from your PS3 to your PSP. Not vice versa. Sorry to get your hopes up :)
The new PSPs can output to a TV, though (but only in SD if I remember correctly).

Actually, the only thing you can really do, game-wise, is download a PSP-playable game from your PS3 to your registered PSP. I did it with Spyro, which I play off the memory stick.
If you have a PS3 game like Uncharted sitting in your drive and you kick it off, your screen goes black and it tells you you can't play it. I think it's primarily because it would be an exercise in frustration: the machine has no way to compensate for net-lag. Also, the PSP's control scheme is pretty limited compared to a SIXAXIS: figure buttons and DPad are fine, but only one each of left and right triggers, only one thumbstick, no L3 or R3, and--of course--no motion-sensing.
It does, however, seem to upgrade and downgrade the streaming video based on how good your connection is. I've seen the video on my PSP be crazily chunky, and I've also seen it be gorgeous, sometimes within seconds of each other.

I believe Liar is the only PS3 game you can remote play from your PS3 to your PSP

I hadn't heard that. Since it got so heavily bashed by reviews, I wasn't going to bother with Lair, but now I'm intrigued.
