or if you are one of the younger regulars, middle school records. What I'm getting at is what records did you really enjoy when you were younger; you felt they were so "relative" to your interests and emotions or just were awesome to listen to for you. Here's a few records I remember I adored in high school and still do:

Bad Religion - The Empire Strikes First
Jellyfish - Bellybutton
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview
Mushroomhead - XIII
System of a Down - Steal This Album!

As for what I liked and don't now? A lot of post-grunge, radio rock and substandard "nu-metal" records. Augh.Anyway; Outside of Bad Religion, I really don't extremely listen to these anymore, but that happens, taste changes. What I ask you is what records are a blast of nostalgia for you?

I used to like radio rock, post grunge, radio rock, and mainstream rap and hip hop. Now I'm more selective and open.

Some of the main ones I remember are:

Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory
MCR-Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Depeche Mode - Violator, Some Great Reward, Music For The Masses, The Singles 81>85
Devo - Freedom of Choice, Greatest Hits
Blondie - Greatest Hits
Nirvana - Nirvana, In Utero, Bleach
Van Halen - Self-titled

Talking Heads - The Best of Talking Heads
Audioslave - Audioslave, Out of Exile

Still listen to all of these albums regularly or on a semi-regular basis. I just noticed how many compilation and best of records I had in my collection, too. Hmm.

Highway to Hell, Live, Let There Be Rock, Back In Black - AC/DC
40 Licks, Flashpoint! - Rolling Stones
DSOTM, The Wall - Pink Floyd
I Robot - APP
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
Bad Company - Bad Company

Since I'm only a freshman in hs:

I listened to these mostly on my iPod

Dookie-Green Day
The College Dropout-Kanye West
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-The Beatles
1-The Beatles
Violent Femmes
40 Licks-The Rolling Stones
The Ultimate Collection-The Who

But in the 6th grade I was all about black music:
Greatest Hits-N.W.A
What's Going On-Marvin Gaye
And a lot of Motown and classic rap records.

Then I tried to fit in by listening to the hip-hop/rap/pop station. I feel horrible about it now, because I wasn't true to myself. Then near the end of 8th grade I started listening to rock.

And now I'm where I am, open to anything.

My high school days were pretty much based on music, and while there a number of bands and records that influenced me in those days, if I had to choose the top 3 I'd go with:

At the Drive-In - "Relationship of Command"
Dead Kennedys - "Plastic Surgery Disasters/In God We Trust, Inc."
The Doors - "Strange Days"

TheClashTheClashTheClash

London Calling
Plus more I don't feel like listing

Cure - Kiss me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Melissa Etheridge - S/T
INXS - Kick
Black Flag - Damaged
REM - Document
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
George Michael - Faith

I have no shame on the last one there. It was an amazing record at the time.

EDIT: I wouldn't listen to it now, so that goes on my list. Also, T'Pau and Robbie Neville lol.

This was 88-92 for me. Let's see, my tastes definitely shifted from punk to metal those years, primarily based on who I was able to see live.

Tesla (my hometown band) - Great Radio Controversy and later the Five Man Acoustical Jam
Metallica - Puppets and Justice mostly, but I actually had a line from Motorbreath as my senior quote.
Megadeth - Rust in Peace and Peace Sells
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys
Maiden - Every album they released until I graduated in 92
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Anthrax - Among the Living, State of Euphoria, Persistence of Time
Death Angel - Act III
Wrathchild America - Climbin' the Walls, 3D
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven
Testament - Practice What You Preach, Souls of Black
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil, Twisted into Form
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power
Guns n Roses - Appetite
Ozzy - Tribute
Social Distortion - s/t, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell
Descendents - Milo Goes to College
Mr. T Experience - Night Shift at the Thrill Factory
Violent Femmes
Sacred Reich - The American Way
Cyclone Temple - I Hate Therefore I Am
Mindfunk - s/t
Metal Church - The Human Factor
Nirvana - Bleach, Nevermind
Pearl Jam - Ten
Alice in Chains - Facelift
Dokken - Beast from the East

eta: wow that's a long list just going off the top of my head and leaving a ton of stuff out.

MronoC
05-08-2009, 04:55 PM
"Iowa" by Slipknot
"Vulgar Display of Power" by Pantera
"The Somatic Defilement" by Whitechapel
"Allegiance" by As Blood Runs Black
"As the Palaces Burn" by Lamb of God
"Maylene and the Sons of Disaster" by Maylene and the Sons of Disaster
"Leviathan" by Mastodon
"Bad Brains" by Bad Brains
"Paranoid" by Black Sabbath
"King of the Delta Blues Singers" by Robert Johnson
"Assassins" by Stephen Sondhemim

It wasn't that long ago, but my tastes have changed a lot, excluding the last five.

Nu-metal isn't exactly known for its meaning and purpose... most of the songs on his setlist are. Your point?

And age is irrelevant when it comes to maturity and music listening habits, as you've apparently proven time and time again.

More knowledge of music? No. More knowledge of street smart? No. More knowledge of absolutely nothing that's useful in life that you learn in school maybe. I was also in AP classes in English and Math, but that's besides the point. Nobody's making any point here really.

I like how you're judging someone's knowledge of music and street smarts when all you have to go off of is a few internet posts.

And let's just look at your avatars (I realize this is a ****ty way to judge musical knowledge, but whatever.) Coincidentally, you both have album covers as your avatars. Yours is Dream Theater. His is Television. I'd say based on that alone he would have more musical knowledge than you.

Like I said, this is a bad example, but whatever, I'm using it anyway.

I'm just supporting the new DT album coming out on June 23rd. Dream Theater consists of some of the best musicians in the world, however, they can't write a song to save their life. Television writes better songs, DT has better musicians.

In general, if someone didn't vandalize a Wiki page, it's usually reliable, though there are a lot of exceptions. Those are mostly on smaller pages and not on larger, more popular pages like I'm sure the alternative metal list page is.

That's only the tip of the iceberg. :)
I used to spend about three days a week in the record store buying up whatever was hot....I tended to lean towards what was considered alternative back then -- new wave, punk, heavy metal, and the rap pioneers. A lot of the stuff that was considered "edgy" when I was a kid is considered mainstream these days....*sigh* :(

Queen-Classic Queen
Kiss-Gold

The only two albums I had in middle school. I don't really listen to them at all, because my interest has sifted to albums for the most part. I still enjoy Kiss to a degree and love Queen but those greatest hits will probably gather dust in the next few years. :D

Sweet! I like the screen writers. I had several of those, too, mostly Maurice Jarre -- Lawrence of Arabia, etc.

I can't even begin to think what my list would be like, but I'll have a shot:

Ray Charles -- I forget the name of the album but it was a bunch of R&B covers of classic country songs from the likes of Hank Williams. MUST HAVE ALBUM!!
Anything Beach Boys
Anything Beatles
Anything Byrds
Anything Lovin Spoonful
Anything Buffalo Springfield
Jefferson Airplane, Surrealistic Pillow
Moby Grape, Moby Grape
Quicksilver Messenger Service, Quicksilver Messenger Service
Anything original Jimi Hendrix experience
Anything Cream
Blue Cheer, Vincebus Eruptus and Outside/Inside
Led Zeppelin I
Jeff Beck Band, Truth
Jethro Tull, This Was and Stand Up
Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead, Aoxomoxoa, Anthem of the Sun, Live Dead
Big Brother and the Holding Company
Procol Harum

Anything Bartok, Haydn symphonies, Beethoven Piano Concerto.

And tons of singles from Motown, the Who, the Kinks, Dave Clark Five, just about any British Invasion group, Roy Orbison, the Yardbirds, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Eric Burdon and the Animals, ...

I was in a working band in my junior and senior years of high school, so we used to listen a lot. Looking back it's hard for me to believe I was actually also on the debate team during this time -- man I wish I still had that kind of energy.

I'm bound to be really embarassed by something I've forgotten :o

My middle school childhood had a progression that went something like this:

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (not listing an album since there are many different recordings)
Holst's Planets (Same thing)
The Beatles: All of their albums (I binged them completely 6th grade to the beginning of 7th)
Cream : Disraeli Gears
Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child (Compilation)
Janis Joplin: 18 Essential Songs (Compilation, again. That's what my parents had, mostly)
Donovan: Donovan's Greatest Hits
The Doors: The Best Of The Doors
Frank Zappa: Freak Out! (everything else came soon after, though this is the first album of his I was really into)

Yeah, not too much, but at that time, I wasn't nearly as into music as I am now. The main part of that came somewhere in between my growing Frank Zappa fandom and the start of my interest in metal. When I look back in retrospect, though, I'll have a lot of kick ass stuff for my high school years, haha.

Slippery When Wet was the only full album that I adored. I used to be a huge glam fan.

when i was 4, Smash and Americana by The Offspring are the albums that got me into music

In middle school I listened to a lot of emo and bands like Motion City Soundtrack. I still love MCS, I played the sh!t out of Commit this to Memory. Emo has gotten a lot worse since 2005 though

Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angeles
Audioslave - self-titled
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
Radiohead - The Bends
U2 - pretty much every album. *sigh*
Pearl Jam - Ten
Rush - Moving Pictures
Beck - Odelay

Odelay's pretty much the only one I listen to regularly anymore.

System of a Down - System of a Down
Mezmerize/Hypnotize - System of a Down
Ashes of the Wake - Lamb of God
The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance - In Flames
Valley of the Damned - Dragonforce
III: In the Eyes of Fire - Unearth
Follow the Reaper - Children of Bodom
Dreaming Neon Black - Nevermore

I still like most of those bands, just not as much or different in some cases.

Anything Led Zepp, and then after that, lots and lots of black metal. Darkthrone and Emperor most of all.
