I never played GH at all, it didn't look like it would be much fun. After playing RB, I realize how much fun this type of game is!! I love the drums the best, but I have been up late playing guitar, I just can't stop :). '

My question is, are the guitar hero games this much fun?? I know there are no drums, but you think it would be worth me buying GH?? Just not sure how GH compares to RB.

The guitar parts of Guitar Hero are similiar to the guitar/bass parts of Rock Band. If you do happen to explore the lovely heritage of guitar games, I would suggest GH1 or 2... as it seems a lot closer to Rock Band's "style" than GH3. Better songs too IMHO.

I like GH2 the best, but that's all personal preference.

The note charts and experience for Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II and 80s is very similar to Rock Band. Same with difficulty. The Note Charts and difficulty is quite a different feel in Guitar Hero III (Harmonix did not develop this product... obviously(?)).

Depending on which console you have, you may be limited in choices... ie; Xbox 360 would only offer the possibility of Guitar Hero II, which I think would definately be worth it.

I have a PS3, which is the best out of the GH series, figured III would be the best.

GH 1 and 2 have better songs PLUS less overlap with Rock Band than GH3, which has six of the same songs that are in or available for Rock Band.

But yeah, if you're on PS3, GH3 is the only way to get more...but your Rock Band Fender Stratocaster doesn't currently work with GH3, so you'd have to get it with the Les Paul and cross your fingers that the rumored patch comes soon and does what we all hope it will.

For a PS3, GH3 is really the only option. There's no native PS3 version of GH1 & 2, and the adapters to make the old guitars work are pretty flakey.

Honestly, I didn't see a huge difference in the "Style" between 2 & 3 (the only two I really played). 3 Introduced "Boss Battles" which are kinda dumb and annoying, but the generic "play the guitar" parts are pretty good. I certainly had a lot of fun with both.

You figured wrong (my opinion only). As I said above, GH III was not made by Harmonix (The same company that made GH I, GH II, 80s and now Rock Band). GH III was made by Neversoft (Tony Hawk fame) and it shows.

If you enjoy music, and more important the note charts/enjoyment of Rock Band, you will not enjoy GH III much past the Hard difficulty, as the note charts get ridiculous for no reason. GH II is probably the best itteration of the entire Guitar Hero series (my opinion only). It has alot of great tracks and some well done covers...and some not so well done covers :)

GH/GH2/GH80s made me feel like I was playing a guitar.

GH3 made me feel like I was playing a video game.

Two simple words.... Free Bird.

It should be one but I wanted to add dramatic effect. Yeah GH 1 and 2 arebetter then 3 to me so go try those out.

I've got a PS3 and I've had tons of fun with both RB and GH3.

If you're really getting good at guitar in RB, you may find GH3 offers some additional challenge since its hard and expert modes are harder and more expert than RB's. I didn't play GH2 or before, so the subtle differences between GH3 and RB on guitar aren't obvious to me, I just found GH3 to get harder more quickly.

They both have excellent music lists. It's a tough and thankless job procuring a bunch of songs that *most* people will like, and I think both teams did quite well.

I wasn't planning to keep GH3 until Harmonix began to talk about a patch for the guitar compatibility. Now I'll keep it for a bit to see how that works out. But otherwise, RB has a lot more to like.

QFT. I don't think anything else needs to be said, this sums it up perfectly!

IMO Guitar Hero III is much more fun then Rock Band's guitar portion. I have a 360 and proudly own and keep GH2, GH3 and Rock Band. If you like music I recommend all the games in these lines.

I'm a nooby so excuse me if this question has been asked before. I just bought both the Xobx 360 versions of GH III and Rock Band for my son for xmas and wanted to know if I had just bought the GH III game would it have played along with the guitar that comes with Rock Band or no? I'm a little nervous now that I got it after hearing alot of people say they liked GH II better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ahh, I guess that's why I haven't seen much of a difference... I could never make the leap to Hard on GH3... that little orange button is such a huge barrier of entry, on top of the fact they nearly double the speed of the game.

This is a hard question to answer when you think about it. GH's style of play is a lot different than RB's. Personally, I've enjoyed the setlists in every GH so far, so my personal taste doesn't gravitate because of that. If you want to get something with similar timing to RB, get GH1 or 2. GH3's difficulty levels have been up, so expert is actually harder than the others, but the timing gives so much leeway that if you could play expert in RB and the previous ones, you'll have no trouble. Only thing to really get used to is the presentation of notes between GH and RB.

The GH3 guitar will play on rock band, but the rock band guitar will not play on GH3.

Don't be nervous. GH3 is a good game, and if your son is new to the games, he's not going to notice any problems for a long time.... at which time you'll probably be able to pick up GH2 for a song.

The GH3 creators have locked out 3rd party controllers, so the RB guitar will not work with GH3.

Might I suggest a GH2 360 bundle? It is going at a cheaper price point as retailers try to bring in the new model, yet it beats the newer version in many respects. The RB guitar would not work with GH2 either, but with the bundle you'd have a cheaper, more fun experience and an extra guitar that works in RB.

I have the 60gb PS3 and its supposed to be very compatiable with PS2 games. You think GH I or II would work with it, or is it a guitar adapter problem??

You can get PS2-to-USB adapters that will allow you to run the PS2 games on the PS3 using the PS2 guitar controllers, but the controllers don't have full functionality when run through the USB adapters. As I hear it, you lose Hammer-on/Pull-off capability, whammy bar functionality and--for some of the games (not sure which)--the tilt sensor to activate Star Power (has to be done with the select button).

I think I would just stick with GH III then. If they come out with a patch, I could use the guitar for bass or my main guitar with Rock Band I guess.

Yeah, that was my plan when I bought GH3 because I'd heard from a reasonably reliable source that the controller was compatible with Rock Band (this was before it was clarified that it was compatible with the 360 but not the PS3). And it's still my plan, assuming the upcoming patch is for what everyone thinks it's for.

As frustrated as I was by GH3 overall, it's still a reasonably fun game experience--it's just that when I saw the bright white light that is Rock Band, the defects in Guitar Hero 3 became much more visible.

I have the 60 gig PS3 as well, and I have GH 1 & 2 for PS2 that I play on it through adapters.

The whammy bar does work, but yes, Hammer-Ons and Pull offs do not work. Also the tilt sensor doesn't work, so to activate star power you have to hit select (pain in the butt). Finally, there's no preview of the buttons you're holding down, which isn't a huge deal (not like no HOPO's).

However, if you can get by all that, it's actually quite playable. A little laggy (at least on my HD TV), but still fun. No problems with PS3 compatibility besides the ones with the guitars.

Oh, and please, for the love of all that is good, do not get GH1 to play on your PS3 if you have an HD TV. I'm sorry Harmonix, but holy hell does it look bad. It's so pixelated it's almost hard to see.

Let me know if you want a link to the adapters, there's pretty much only one kind that works (I did a lot of research).

That's an opinion completly. After buying Rock Band, I bought GH3 because there's very few songs that I like in the original package of Rock Band while there's a lot in GH3. Since I prefer the guitar, I decided to pick GH3 not long ago to practice my guitar skills when I'm alone.

The graphics are pretty bad, the backgrounds aren't nearly as great as in Rock Band and there's barely no customization, but they was more songs to my tastes and the same song on the same difficulty is harder in GH, so it's good practice.
