Hey guys and girls.
Let's try a little experiment.
Last.fm is a site that tracks what music you are listening to. There are plugins for the major mp3 players (iTunes, winamp etc). As you listen to music on your computer, the plugin replays the song info up to last.fm.
Here is my account to get an idea of how it tracks your music:
http://www.last.fm/user/bucketo/
The cool thing is we can create a last.fm "group", people can join the group and on a weekly basis Top Played Charts are generated to show what music has been popular as listened to by the members of the group.
If you have a last.fm account or are interested in joining, head over to:
http://www.last.fm/group/Rock+Band+Video+Game
And join. With all this talk about what songs should and shouldn't be in the game, let's see what last.fm will aggregate amongst all of us RB gamers. I'm betting we'll see some obvious stuff like Metallica etc show up high on the charts, but I bet we'll also see some hidden gems work their way up too.
Weekly charts are generated on Sundays after we have 10 members.
Once the charts start generating we can use last.fm widgets to show the charts in places like the forum singatures etc.
Can't hurt to see what happens!
EDIT:
Here's the weekly chart image. It will update automatically every week

I joined the group but my plug-in had been messed up for the past couple of months and I've been too busy (lazy) to get a new one. So...I have not submitted a track in a while....

Hey Trans,
There should be an option in the plug-in to sync your ipod plays with last.fm. I do the same thing, I use my ipod a lot as well as iTunes during the day.

I have last.fm but tend to leave my music going all day, partially due to forgetting to stop it, and then when I remember I'm too lazy to anyway; so I don't think I can really contribute unless you're alright with Five Iron Frenzy being at the top of the charts.

That's ok. If you leave a playlist going its better anyway.

We've hit 10 members in the last.fm group so charts will start to generate at the end of the week. Should be interesting.
Any predictions?

The first week results are in, and all the top five bands are already in the game. In fact, three of the five already have DLC, too.
Once you get into the groups three people listen to, it starts to reveal some bands that haven't gotten any love which maybe should.
However, this could be more accurate and interesting with more people, so in short, a-bump.

Does anyone know how the charts are calculating? The reason I ask is that the top artist for the week prior to December 9 has only 5 plays, but if you look at the individual group members they all have artists with far more plays than that.
Does the group chart divide total plays by the number of members or something?

Tide,
The Group Charts only count each artist once per person.
Some of the chart:
pos - band name - plays
1 Black Sabbath 5
2 David Bowie 4
2 Metallica 4
2 Rush 4
2 The Killers 4
6 Primus 3
6 The Rolling Stones 3
6 Goldfinger 3
6 Nine Inch Nails
6 Red Hot Chili Peppers 3
I'll see if the chart widget will work when posted to the forum here.

(note that this image auto updates weekly)
We're now up to 20 members. I see Metallica dropped off a bit and I didn't expect Sublime to get ranked so high.

Rush took over 1st place from Sublime. We should keep track of the top band each week to see who keeps coming out on top on a regular basis. Man I thought Metallica would rank higher on a regular basis.
