It appears that the crack resulted in a piece of plastic pushing up against the wire that connects the head to the set, and the plastic SEVERED the wire. This is for the blue pad. I opened up the other heads, and although the red and green are designed differently on the inside, the yellow has the same design, and I saw something else very revealing. Even though my yellow pad is not cracked, the plastic is STILL making bad contact w/ the wires, and they're close to being completely severed as well.
What's my point? 2 things:
1) If you have a set with a cracked head that is not responding (or any head that is not responding, for that matter), and it's out of warranty, pop the head off and see if the 2 wires that connect the head to the set are severed. If they are, you may be able to solder it back on to fix it (I plan on trying this soon).
2) This is obviously a design flaw for at least some of the RB2 drums. The plastic on the heads, even when not cracked, are rubbing up against the wires and there is the potential for the wires to get severed. This can easily be remedied in a number of ways, including simply putting some electrical tape or silicon over the wires where the plastic rubs on them. If I ever get a new RB2 set, the first thing I'm doing is taking the heads off and fixing this myself, which will hopefully prevent any future problems.
Hopefully my post helps at least one person out there fix their busted drums. Maybe even HMX will take notice and improve on the design of the drums in the future. Maybe they'll even make it so that people can actually FIND the RB2 drums if they want to purchase them....I can dream, can't I?
