Our PS3 suffered from, and I know this isn't the technical term, "the yellow light of death". I returned the unit and Sony promptly replaced it (for which I am grateful).
The original unit was bought in December of 2007 and Rock Band was the first game bought for it. Over the next 1.5 years, my son downloaded several songs for the game that weren't transferred onto the replaced unit.
I know it's a long shot, but is there any way Rock Band has the download history saved and we could download these songs onto our new unit?? That's a lot of money to reinvest.....again, I have a feeling I know the answer to this question and it's "sorry. buy them again".
Thanks!!

If you are logged into the same PSN account from your first PS3, the account would have remembered what you bought, and then you can re-download anything that you had purchased before. The same EXACT thing happened to me, and that was the solution. ☺

It will be located in your download history in the PSN store.
