View Full Version : This is why overdrive doesn't work right laying back on a couch.

After tweaking the overdrive yesterday, (http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=13523) there were still some problems and this is why.
As you can see below with my wonderful artistry, the Overdrive sensor is a tube with a ball inside. At one end is 2 contacts which create a circuit when the ball contacts them both. When standing and playing the guitar face is vertical, and inside, so are the contacts in relation to the tube. You can have the guitar in the normal position (10-20 degrees up at the neck) and even though the bearing is at the contact end of the tube your overdrive will not activate This is because the round ball stops when it hits the lower contact but is still not touching the top one. (this is basic geometry, the ball is slightly smaller than the tube, but the prongs are both evenly placed) It isn't until the guitar is tilted back when the ball rolls up on to the lower prong and touches both.
However when you're reclined it's a different story. With the guitar now rotated back the prongs are now roughly on the sides of the overdrive tube. Even that 10 degrees you have the neck tilted up will cause the ball to touch both prongs and activate overdrive.
Relating to my post from yesterday, I needed an additional tweak. After rotating it down 45 degrees like that, if I played standing then I had to put the guitar nearly vertical for the bearing to rest on both. While reclined it was almost the same. It no longer went off on it's own, but my preferred movement wouldn't get it to a spot where it touched both either, making me raise it quite high for it to activate.
To fix this I have now twisted the board a bit as well, so it's about 60 degrees laying down and 30 degrees tilted from its original position. This truly has made it work 100% as I prefer it. Your preferred spot may be somewhat different depending if you primarily sit back or stand to play, but I think this works very well for both postions.

People actually play this game while reclining?
How are you supposed to break stuff?

I'll admit I play both sitting down and standing up but not while lying down lol. If you chose to play while lying down or leaning back why not just press select instead of worrying about all the tilt problems? But I find that this game is made to be playing while at least sitting up, not in bed with the covers over your head. JK! :D

I would have gladly pushed the button if that was the easy cure, but when reclined the OD goes off by itself most of the time because the sensors are already touching. Now I can use it when I want and how I want and it's just great to be able to do that.
Also, over 9000 hours in MS paint.

Great topic. Anyway, i also play reclined and my sensor is always going off. It's really a pain. Hope my new one works good sitting down, if not i'll probably mess with it to get it to my liking. And i cant hit the select button. I think it's HORRIBLY positioned and i could never press it without messing up. The SG had it better placed.

Not standing up = fail.
I'm like the fattest guy around, and even i'm not lazy enough to play sitting down.

Dude, I WISH my sensor would go off too easily. I have to practically turn my Strat upside down and dance around just to get Overdrive to activate at all. I've had to finally learn to use Select because of that.
And man, I've tried playing reclined, but it just doesn't work for me. I have to be at least sitting up straight to be able to hit notes accurately. I would play standing so I can rock out and look like a tard :D, but I don't really have enough space in my room to do so. Particularly not with the drums sitting there.

A friend of mine is practically in the fetal position on his couch when he plays.
I told him he was going to have a hard time doing that with the drums. :p

I play sitting down sometimes. If you've already been standing up for hours and you want to relax with some RB, it makes total sense. Plus, if you've just been rockin' out for hours on end, your legs and feet may get tired.
Nice job :)

I have the same problem of trying to fire it off at will.
I play guitar while sitting on my futon for a very good reason. When I start rocking, I reeeally start rocking and I pose a danger to my band-mates enough as it is. If I were fully mobile, then when I entered my metal-induced whirling dervish mode, all heck would break loose and I would most likely break something starting with my guitar.
Give me a sturdy wireless controller and I will be truly dangerous.
