I just got my new guitar in the mail.

But my friends xbox scratched the crap out of the extreme outer edge of my rockband disc. it would no longer play in his box.

I bring it home and pop it in my fresh refurbed xbox and it will run, but not great. (it would load slow and it gave me an error a few times. I called ea and the disc replacement is $20.

I figured it wouldnt hurt to try to fix my scratched disc. I did the ole toothpaste trick and it seemed to help take out some of the major scratch.

HERE IS THE ISSUE

The game works in my xbox, but the loading is still slower than before and I noticed that the drive does not seem to be spinning at full speed. the game plays fine with no errors (YET!) but 90% of the time the xbox sounds like it does when at the dashboard (not spinning at full speed like any other 360 game)

Whats the deal?

I just want to know if this is going to overwork my optical drive or anything.

It's not going to overwork your optical drive or anything like that. If it's dropping filiments or other particulates, it might dirty things up in there faster... although a cleaning kit should fix it.

I wouldn't sweat using it in the short term, but plan on getting yourself a new disk. With the sealant-like layers of the disc platter cracked, it's likely that it will wear with time and become less readable.

Did you try the brasso cleaning trick? I don't know how effective this would be for a disc damaged from an Xbox, but if the scratch isn't too deep brasso or non-waxy furniture cleaner will do a great job of resurfacing. I found a can at Ace Hardware for $2 (and it smells like lemons...real nice!).

i did the toothpaste and it seems about as effective as a disc dr. its playable but not perfect.

i plan on sending it in after the holidays when a few of my buddies will have the game.
