View Full Version : Online Play Should Be More Like GH3?

So, for those who haven't played it, online play in Guitar Hero 3 works horribly. However, the way it is supposed to function is a bit better than Rock Band. You pick a number of songs to play (5, 7, 9, etc.) and then it goes back and fourth between players and each picks a song. Could be a nice way of working rock band. Each band member can pick a song.

I like that a lot. Much better than just leaving it all to one person, who, even if he tries to pick stuff everyone likes, may still fail.

F GuitarHeroIII, all the rampant cheating. As for the leader picking the song, communicate before starting. Its not that hard of a concept. The system is fine as it is...

That's all well and good for the XBox people, but us PS3 people have no way of communicating what we would like to play.

There is no way of selecting a persons name and then typing the info to them? I am glad I went with the 360 now, I can select the gamer's name and <gasp> type it out. If my mic is on the fritz. Even the Wii lets people communicate and that is a last gen console with next gen controls.... Sorry for you....

The Xbox360 is the only way of communicating in-game using console functions. PS3 cannot, and Wii cannot. Support for this is planned for the PS3, however (with Sony's infamous patches).

Ranked play doesn't allow anyone to pick in Rock Band. It's terrible if you want to play expert, because it ends up being a battle of "who misses 1 or 2 notes" for 60% of the songs.

Guitar Hero's is questionably implemented, and one player sitting on a "best of 1" song is stupid, but Rock Band's needs to be revised. Either shorten the list to songs that are interesting on guitar (which would cut the list down by about 50%), or let players pick in a best of 3 or something.

By making it random, it keeps people from knowing one or two songs, and playing those over and over again, only to get their ranks up. This way keeps the field a little more even...:p

I would love to compare and contrast the two, but all I get with GH3 is "game not available" or "failed to connect" or some nonsense.

For a second I thought this post would be about ****ty GH3 guitar battles. Thank god it's not.

I wouldn't mind a system like that. As long as every one doesn't choose Through the Fire and Flames all the time.

Whoops, sorry, bad GH memories popping up again.

It does, but I can't explain how frustrated I get when I lose to someone on In Bloom or Learn to Fly because I missed 1 or 2 notes or star powered at a SLIGHTLY worse time, then played the same person again (another issue with these repeated matchups) on a song like GGAHT or Train Kept a Rolling and had them quit halfway through the song.

But of course, losing with a trueskill of 33 with a person who has 14 on In Bloom and basically shutting them out on a tough song still lowers you rank overall.

Umm... this is completely untrue. PS3 has in-game voice chat built into the OS just like the 360. The only difference is that Microsoft forces developers to include it, and Sony does not. The problem with Rock Band is that they chose not to include it for the PS3 version for some reason.

It is true that the PS3 currently doesn't have in-game access to friends lists or text messaging. Yes Sony is working on it. When it'll actually come out, we don't know.

That's what I meant by CONSOLE functions. The console does it, not the software. I have a PS3, I know exactly what it does and does not do, and it does NOT communicate with other people in-game. Stupid Sony. ;)

I like the idea of a 2 out of 3 song battle where both people would choose a song and a random 3rd song would be implimented for a tie breaker if the score is tied 1 to 1. It seems like a lot of little things were missed on this game. Online battle options are one of them.

I like battles, I think they are a cool distraction.

The approach to song choice in GH3 online co-op mode is the ONLY aspect of GH3 that is in any way superior to Rock Band.

On the PS3, we not only don't get a choice unless we're the leader, but we don't get input because we can't voice chat with the leader or other players--which is ridiculous, because the PS3 supports voice chat in its native mode. Connecting four players within the game should be trivial.

I presume it (and support for the "Players Met" feature) got left out because of time constraints.
