Determining whether I suck or my guitar sucks

Two things:

1) First, I have this thing where my guitar will trigger Overdrive on its own as soon as I accrue enough energy. Although, I think this is my thing where I'm on my couch and the guitar face is pointed too much at the ceiling. I suspect it's just that the angle of the guitar confuses the system.

But anyone else having this issue, and if so, any insight?

2) Up & down strumming. Probably me more than the guitar, but I've just graduated to the hard level, and I just can't get the timing down for up & down strumming on fast notes. When people talk about broken guitars is it that strumming doesn't work, or just that it appears way out of sync, like my problem appears to be?

I guess what I'm asking is: what is the problem exactly with all these broken guitars? Because I have been blessed with two guitars (bought one on eBay) that seem to work fine and a pedal that hasn't broken yet.

I appreciate any (helpful) responses, and my thoughts & prayers are with those that are having issues. I really seem to have lucked out.

I have two guitars, one started out like that and now overdrive won't activate at all (unless I press the back button) and the second one has developed in to that exact problem (goes off all by itself whenever it feels like it whether I'm sitting or standing). Of course I'm from Canada so I have to wait a few more weeks for a replacement.

Yeah, I can't get that up/down strumming thing either for the fast notes. I can 100% all of them on medium by downstrumming but when I move to hard I just can't move fast enough I guess and the timing seems to be way off. I can up/down strum them on medium just fine, it just seems to be off when I get to hard/expert (but of course they are closer together then).

Wouldn't just going into practice mode and turning the speed down a bit tell you if it is you or your guitar? Maybe it is even your TV, make sure you have the calibration settings set.
