What do you think? does Nintendo have real shortage problems or is it yet another gimmick?

Discuss.

Edit: I screwed up on the title for the thread (added an extra "the"), so pay no attention.:o

They have to have a shortage. I work at a video store, and there seems to be customer coming in or calling every half an hour hoping to buy one. And when we do recieve any, theyre gone within 3 hours. It's just crazy right now.

I know that there are shortages at the retail stores. The point is: is Nintendo deliberately creating those shortages to make it seem like a lot of people wants a Wii and therefore making other people want it also (which is clearly the case). This is a marketing strategy companies sometimes use.

Hahaha omg. That's amazing...those corporate geniuses.
And unfortunate at the same time.
I have my fair share of cynicism too.

I don't understand this whole Wii shortage, and why so many adults & serious gamers are wanting this system. Don't get me wrong, I grew up playing NES, and when I was 5-10 it was a fine system with plenty of enough graphics for me, but now that I'm an adult I prefer an adult games system, like 360. I got ticked at the entire Wii thing because the characters don't look much different on the ones I saw than it looked back when they had the Super Nintendo System, and you can't find a freaking NHL game for it with actual real life players on it.

But I sorta feel like the poster that started this thread, that there isn't a real shortage. It's just Nintendo's way of trying to compete with superior machines. Heck where I live I went to Walmart today and there were 3 Wii's & only 10 year olds are eyeballing the games for this thing. So plenty of them here! Besides the whole controller things for the Wii look majorly cheap and like they are going to be loads of trouble later on. The only person I know that owns one, got it for her 9 year old daughter so this is a kiddies system at best.

Of my two best friends from high school (we're in college now) One bout a 360, one bought a wii, and i bought a ps3. And the only guy sick of his system is the wii.
Nintendo is definently creating a shortage to hype it up and rive up demand. It's been out for over a year and they can't make enough?? B***S***. Plus ps3 outsold wii in japan and there's no shortage of ps3's.

They're creating this shortage, they could have plenty of systems ready for Christmas, but you can't have a surplus, ever, in the minds of Nintendo or any videogame company any more.

I still find it crazy how fast these things fly though. I work overnight stock at Walmart, in Canada...and our store decided to do the open 24-hour thing for the holidays. Anyways, we got 20 WII's in on Thursday..unadvertised...and put them out at midnight, they were ALL gone by 6am. It's ridiculous, I think.

Weren't you the first guy to find out about Foreplay / Longtime and Next to You?

Good times...

I just don't understand all this demand for the Wii. I thought it was a bit "gimmicky" or a "novelty" when it came out and just never understood the uproar about it.

But I can't argue with sales no matter what my opinion of it is.

We scored a Wii recently after my kids revised their Christmas list. We had no idea that they really wanted on.

And of all places where we got it? ShopRite. (Grocery store in the northeast)
All other places were sold out.

The Wii has ALWAYS been hard to find and in-demand since its launch last year. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones to have had it since day 1. It can be fun and reinvented gaming but mine collects dust more than anything. It got some play recently when Super Mario Galaxy came out but its back to collecting dust again. It'll be that way until Brawl comes out.

I love my Wii. The new online games will revive interest, especially when Brawl comes out.

Honestly, the Wii is out of stock everywhere because people are stupid. It was not hard to find one in late summer/early fall. You had to shop around a little, sure...but if you went to a major retailer on the days they ran their newspaper ads, you could walk right in and pick one up. Now everyone is scrambling to get Christmas gifts and are surprised that they can't find one.

Nintendo could manufacture more...but why would they? There's a lot of cost to them involved in hiring manufacturers, starting up plants, etc...and no one knows when the Wii craze will end, so they might ramp their production up just in time to not need it anymore.

Plus, the less people have it, the less people to ***** about how there aren't any games for it. I think the craze is going to die off once enough people realize that as fun as WiiSports is, it's not worth $250.

Well if you think about it, it's great for the business not to have enough because people assume that since stores keep running out it must be great, and publicity it's big for it. I work at a Circuit City which gets 20 like about every two weeks and people are willing to turn into popsicles out in the cold just to have the chance to get a voucher and receive one. It's really funny, suckers should've preordered them last year before launch day just like i did.

Yea. I bought one for $250 from a guy at my college. I was gonna sell it on ebay and make $100 or so like most people have been doing. My mom found out I had it and bought it from me for my sister :(

where i live (SouthCentral Ontario) the demand is freaking huge. It has almost got to the point at my job(Zellers Electronics) that i have to pick up the phone and say "Hello, Electronics, no we don't have any wii's in stock". Every call is for that or guitar hero. Out of 10 calls, usually it's 8 for wii's, 2 for GH. 6 people waited in line since 3 o'clock yesterday in our electronics waiting for one since we were "getting a truck in" at 8 . We had them in the back, but waited until 8pm, which is nonsense i felt.

They went to the homeware section to get chairs to wait, and the one manager was a complete douschebag and told them they needed to buy the chairs or else they had the option to sit or stand for the rest of the 4 or 5 hours. Give me a freaking break. They're going to be spending more then 2000 in your store combined, probably closer to 3000 with the extra accessories and games.

I haven't gotten a call yet for rock band, but i have been spreading the world to people looking for Guitar Hero :).
