While I know I am risking voiding my warranty by trying to open my guitar, I am curious to see if I can fix my strum bar by myself.

The problem that I have (is this typical?) is a strum bar that does not come back very well on the down strum and a little better on the up strum. It feels like there is nothing pushing it towards the middle when strummed down.

I tried to open it, but even after I removed all the screws including the neck ones, I could not get it to open. Feels like something is holding it closed, though I can get it open about a centimeter around. Anyone know if this is something new?

Should I just RMA? Or is my guitar not "broken"?

Haven't heard of anyone having this problem yet. Would be nice to know the answer though.

I would guess you are missing a screw.

I removed 16 screws from the back of the device. I even removed the battery cover. No dice. Are there any screws that are just like... hidden?

Try removing the pick guard. I've heard on some models there is a screw or 2 that hold it connected. Let me know if that works for you.

Shoot I am not by my guitar or I would make sure that is right. But 16 does sound close. And if you had almost all your screws off, the guitar should at least start comming apart. Maybe try to put something in the seam and twist? If you do this, a wide thin flat head with a piece of Paper Towel wrapped around the head would work well, just be VERY VERY carefull. If you feel to much tension just stop.

what exactly is the pick guard?

what exactly is the pick guard?
The white piece on the front of the guitar that is suppose to guard the "pick" from scraping the body when strumming.
