View Full Version : DethTung's House of Funk Metal

The title says it all. It's a funk metal thread.
My goal here is to have a thread where we can have organized discussion about funk metal. I'll post a topic and allow for discussion in that topic. If people want a new subject on this thread, they can let me know and I might set up the topic. If it goes off topic, I will post a new subject.
First topic: Defining funk metal
I can think of only three bands who are funk metal that achieved mainstream success, and those are RATM, Faith No More and Primus. This topic is about defining funk metal.
Some parts to answer include...
-What instruments are frequent in funk metal?
-What kinds of songwriting approaches have funk metal bands taken?
-What are some characteristics of funk metal songs?
-Who are some bands under this genre?
OK, let's get the discussion going!

I take that as a yes.
At least I have a wider music exposure than most people my age who use the forums. Most people I know who have an interest in music in that group are replicas of middle school kids of today who listen mostly to Fall Out Boy and Paramore.

Infectious Grooves!
DethTung
05-28-2009, 09:43 PM
Yeah, there's an example. I'll look them up on iTunes and see what they sound like.
OK, I looked them up. They've got a nice, funky sound to them while still containing metal elements. Plus they've got horn sections (or are those keyboards?).
Note: That was just a description for those who haven't heard of Infectious Grooves.
Also, Incubus was funk metal in their early works. Their first two albums- Fungus Amoungus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E.- as well as their first EP, Enjoy Incubus, were showcases of what funk metal can do in the right hands.

I prefer to keep my age undisclosed, but I do have a job as a poetry writer. Nothing's been published or collected yet, though.
Plus the band I listened to was 30 Seconds to Mars. I'll regret hearing The Kill for the rest of my life.

And by the way, the genres you listed were all mainstream **** genres sans hardcore punk, reggae, and jazz (which I'm sure you haven't listened to enough or even the correct artists). What hardcore punk bands have you listened too?

Let's see...(looks up 30 Seconds to Mars on Wikipedia)...yup, they're emo!
Plus, I've listened to plenty of them, like NOFX and Rise Against.
I also count approximately 20 genres on my list compared to my co-workers' 4.
If the poet job doesn't align with the co-workers, that's because (oddly enough) my co-workers and I formed a poetry society.

Dont feel bad man. This subforum can be full of just asshattery and high and mighty cockfloggin sometimes. If you dont have a certain amount of music snobbery worn on your sleeve you can get baptized by fire by certain people. I usually just ignore it as this forum can be better than that sometimes. Where as we could be positive and promote music discussion we can end up just flamfesting like dicks.

No I watch about 145 wiki articles. You can watch for vandalism that way. A lot of bands have as many as a dozen music gurus who get instant updates when a change is made and they will reverse it if your wiki reputation is non existant or ****.

There is an "edit this page" tab at the top of the page next to "article", "discussion", and "history". If you try to make it funny it will be reverted almost instantly.
