I've had my guitar, a Fender Squire Strat, for about a year. I've learned a few things. Smoke on the Water riff, Sunshine of your Love riff, Smells like Teen Spirit solo, and almost the whole of Killing in the Name. Things like that. No real commitment.

My question; What songs would you recommend a starting guitarist to learn? My fingers aren't very fast and I tend to lose track of where they are. I hardly know any chords.

I tried learning songs that I'm familiar with, but everything is too fast. Just a few songs will be greatly appreciated.

Iron Man, of course. More Nirvana is a good place to start, and Enter Sandman is also a simple song. Just don't expect to get the solo down any time soon.

Umm... really easy song would be "Come as You Are" by Nirvana.

Anything by Black Sabbath uses the same 3 power chords, all good to learn. (Don't Fear)The Reaper is a really cool and easy riff to learn. First solo I learned was Stairway to Heaven, which isn't too bad.

First song I ever learned to play was Black Dog. It's got good finger movement across most of the strings and is confined between the 5th and 7th frets....good to get your finger agility up.

Anything by greenday will be easy as far as power chords and stuff mostly.
Free fallin is really easy.
Make sure you learn the basic open campfire type chords like G, A, Am, Em, D, C and F. You can play a lot of songs with those chords.

3 Doors Down has simple songs, if you like them. Be Like That was one of the first songs I learned how to play, it's pretty ridiculously easy.

Stairway to Heaven is another good song. I never really bothered learning the solo (I oddly never enjoyed playing lead guitar that much...), but the rest of the song is easy and relatively fun.

Most Rammstein songs are pretty damn easy. That's pretty much all I play, plus the occasional bit of NIN.

Oh, and random theme songs for tv show/movies/video games. lol

Simple Man and Sweet Home Alabama are really easy if you like Skynyrd. Anything by CCR is pretty basic and fun too. Some more easy solos I just thought of are Epic and One.

I just started learning guitar no more than 2 months ago. My first song that I can really complete is Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. Its three chords over and over and over with the typical folk strum pattern.

Some other easy songs that I have learned but not mastered (and this is easy from the perspective of someone with absolutely no background whatsoever) are

"Your Guardian Angel" by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (great for doing barre chords and learning to retune to drop c)

The intro to "Ghost of a Good Thing" by dashboard confessional

"As Lovers Go" Dashboard Confessional (good for strum pattern because its a bit tricky)

I am going to bookmark this page though and try some of the other songs on here.

Avoid the solos:

One - Metallica

Enter Sandman - Metallica

More Nirvana stuff

The intro riff to Plug in Baby - Muse

I have an excellent book, "Rifftionary", with over 130 easy riffs. Get that.

Wipe Out (that one surf song)
Most Nivana songs (Basic Power Chords) ex: In Bloom/Polly
Rock You Like A Hurricane (without solos)
AC/DC if you can get down the few chords they use their songs become pretty easy.

Good Riddance is just some broken up chords that are pretty easy. Tears in Heaven is something easy if you want to play something acoustic. When you do want to try a solo, definitely go for one of the one I posted.

I'd say you should learn "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, maybe five chords in the entire song, it's pretty easy to learn, and fun to play.

Smoke on the Water helps you with power chords
Stairway to Heaven helps your finger-picking
and Enter Sandman helps you sell out

Always loved that one. :p
