Did you think Microsoft was going to let Apple have all the fun?

Confirming weeks of speculation, Microsoft has officially announced the Zune HD. The specs -- a 3.3 inch OLED touchscreen, the ability to output in HD, an HD Radio receiver, a full-screen web browser and built-in Wi-Fi -- are pretty impressive, but perhaps the most exciting tidbit is that the Zune marketplace will be fully integrated into Xbox and Xbox Live as a replacement for the current Live video service.

That's a huge step for Microsoft, who until now have oddly kept the Zune and Xbox brands on opposite side of the room. With one move, they'll be exposing the Zune to about 17 million customers who are already using a piece of Microsoft hardware. Moreover, those 17 million are also gamers, and the Zune HD's combination of touchscreen capability, Wi-Fi access and robust marketplace seems the perfect recipe for a move into the handheld gaming space.

Microsoft seems to feel the same way. In an interview with Develop, Chris Stephenson, GM of consumer marketing for the TV, Video and Music Business at Microsoft, all but confirmed that gaming is definitely on the agenda.

"Gaming is a big opportunity for us," he said. "We’re not announcing the specifics around our gaming plans for Zune HD right now, but it is definitely an area that we have done some work in...there is clearly a great opportunity for us to be a major player in that market."

The Zune could certainly use a boost. Sales of the system have waned in recent months, and as Apple's iPhone/iPod Touch continues to gain traction as a legit all-in-one entertainment device, the Zune has been looking more and more like a somewhat stale, expendable piece of hardware.

To counter that, Microsoft will be including the system in its presentation at next week's E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles, noting that "attendees will see firsthand how Zune integrates into Xbox LIVE to create a game-changing entertainment experience." Is a sizzle trailer of some Zune HD games asking too much? We'll find out soon enough.

I don't really care much for the idea of a Microsoft portable, but the past that interested me was that they're using OLED screens. Have you guys seen those in action before? They're absolutely BEAUTIFUL

I certainly plan to get one. I've already got a Zune 80gb, so it's more of an upgrade than anything else. I'd love to have one though.

I just need something with at least 180 GB, if not more.

If it's hard drive based, I'll consider it. Especially since it looks like they're going to have a web browser on it as well, like the iPod Touch.

Depending on the details and the price point, I may very well buy.

Scary thought, I know.

I'm not getting one if the largest size is only 64 GB.

Exactly this. I also have the 80Gb Zune, but I'll be getting one of these. My girlfriend just got an iPod touch so I'll get the competitor. :D

What exactly does this mean? Is this saying that it will replace the Netflix video service? Or does it mean that they won't offer the Video section of Live anymore?

Will this mean if I get a Zune that I will be able to play my XBLA games anywhere!?!?! If so I could quite possibly buy it :D

I'd imagine it just involves plastering the Zune name all over the XBL video marketplace. They already use the same MS Points to buy stuff.

That was my first thought, that would be the only way I'd invest in it

OLED screens are hardcore. i saw one at SonyStyle and I swear it was about as thin as a credit card. also you could stand at like a 170 degree angle and still see the screen perfectly.

it was awesome.

I'm partial to the Texas Hold 'Em game in it myself, though Hexic is a blast.

when i first heard that MS was getting into handhelds I thought "why bother?"

Now that I see its not direct competition to the mighty mighty DS, I'm a little more intrigued

If I can play good arcade games on it, like Castle Crashers or something, then I would buy it.

I don't have an mp3 player either, so this could be good anyway.

They are very much the cream of the crop right now. I remember when they first came out and the tiny little 11" OLED television was selling for something silly like $13k. The detail was breathtaking, but it made me wonder how many people would drop that much. You could buy a few bigscreens for that price!

It sounds cool, but it boils down, mainly, to Microsoft trying to play catch-up once again. It's the same thing they did with the Zune initially as well as with the Xbox. With the latter they managed to do a great job with the sequel, establishing a dominant presence in the marketplace. However, the Zune can't compete with the iPod brand and Apple's constant refreshes (not to mention that the competitor really knows what it's doing, which can't be said for Sony). Are third-party apps even possible? If they aren't, there is no way it will compete with the iPhone/iPod Touch. Even if it is, I doubt that they'll get the same support Apple is (because of its lead and popularity, as well as the fact that Cocoa is orders of magnitude easier than anything from Microsoft).

As for the features not present in iPods:
- the HD output requires a dock sold separately
- who the hell listens to radio with one of these things? iPhones/iPod Touches have iheartradio anyway
- okay, the screen is cool, I'll give it that
