Have some questions, and issues...any help is appreciated

I am a PS3 owner, and I picked up the Rockband bundle on Nov. 30th from Best Buy, no pre-order, just sitting there on the shelf (possibility of this bundle not being part of the first manufacture?). I, like many of you are suddenly having an issue with the guitar down strum and overdrive not functioning properly. I have scoured these forums for a way to fix these problems on my own, and was wondering if one of you had any definitive information on how to accomplish this- and also if its worth it to attempt. There are so many posts in here about people waiting for replacement guitars and when they finally do get them, they don't work either. I am a bass player and I play the guitar controller with my fingers (upstrokes), so this really doesn't affect me too much, but I have lots of company coming in the next few weeks, stoked to play this game, and if the guitar isn't going to work properly its going to suck. I guess I just need a quick fix to get me through the holidays and then I can send for a replacement, but will doing so void the warranty?
Also, being a bassist I was bummed that solo tour mode did not have the option for you to play bass on it, is this something thats going to be added in to the game via patch?
Lastly, me and my girl were a bit intoxicated when we named our characters and band, and suffice to say they were too offensive to go on the leaderboards. While you can change your character's name, I can't find a way to change the band's name...did I miss something or is this not an option either?
