never really got into either genres, so some recommendations would be nice.

i think doom metal seems boring/repetitive, so hopefully you guys can change my mind.

thanks in advance

I dont consider myself the goto guy for black metal but I really like this band:

They're not pure black metal at all (more of a black + power metal fusion) but I think its a good bridge into black metal. Most people find it hard to get into black metal because of the Cobra Commander vocals, but I actually have the hardest time with production.

Can't go wrong with Mercyful Fate for an intro to Black Metal also Dragon Lord is somewhat thrashy (has Testament members in it) I found them fairly accessible at first as well.

Mercyful Fate can surprisingly actually act as a gateway, even though it bares hardly any similarites with black metal (other than themes/imagery and allegedly the high pitched vocals) The extremely high falsetto by King Diamond could prepare some people for black metal's high pitched snarls. Besides that, they are a great band. I recommend The Oath, Melissa, and especially their incredible self-titled EP (also called Nuns Have No Fun)

I'd recommend Immortal's later stuff, such as Suns of Nothern Darkness. Hardly black metal, but it is accessible and a good gateway. In addition to that thrashy black metal such as Aura Noir.

First wave black metal can also be a gateway, although none of them are actually black metal (sans Bathory which could pass as black metal at times) Check out early Bathory, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, and Venom.

i actually think modern black metal works as a better gateway due to the cleaner recordings, wider variety of styles, and typically less primitive musicianship...

bands like wolves in the throne room can appeal to post-rock and shoegaze fans, iskra to punk fans, angelcorpse to death metal fans, anaal nathrakh to industrial and grindcore fans, etc.

Ok so I saw you liked Opeth a lot and referred you to Agalloch as a bridge into black and doom metal. But here's some more pure black/doom:

Personally this is the stuff i'm currently really in to.

Black Metal:

Darkestrah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3Ic2g3umoI&feature=related) (i honestly listen to their new album once a day. seriously)
Oranssi Pazuzu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmZ8GkprvEk) (psychedelic BM)
Fen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEWj-bnVjNo&feature=related) (another one of my daily albums)
Forest Silence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0RNlFiCsWM&feature=related) (nice and dark)
DRUDKH (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DzTHCRmyKs&feature=related) (this is my fav DRUDKH track)(i think i like the album songs of grief and solitude best by them)

Doom Metal:

Hour of 13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwz-zkN0UjU) (I always recommend these guys to Doom fans, all they're songs were removed from Ytube, all that's left is this promo for their album)
Bongzilla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyJn3DzeH4s) (more sludge than doom i suppose, but i love the song)
Big Boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-UoxKs9DEU) (really enjoyed the newest album)
Jex Thoth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCQTpUinZIU)(really awesome band...right Afterstasis?;) )
Pagan Altar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSpWRtln1zU&feature=related) \m/
