...that the Sex Pistols are overrated? I mean sure, God Save The Queen, Pretty Vacant, Anarchy and Holidays In The Sun are awesome songs but how can a band with only one album get so much attention. They bore me now, I barely listen to them b/c of their lack of variety and quantity. With The Clash, they have a much wider variety in their music and obviously more music (5 albums) and the Ramones, while they lack the variety, they have lots of songs and many albums with tons of kick ass songs. I don't see why a band that had one album with a few good songs gets all this hype.

Because I listen to what I enjoy, not what the bands I enjoy listened to. Well, this isn't entirely true, because the Go Gos and Patti Smith are great, but I just never 'got' those three bands.

Also, punk did not begin until Riot Grrrl.

I don't really think they are overrated purely from the standpoint that they did, under the direction of their manager, kick mainstream culture in the groin. They created legitimate outrage on such a wide scale that their contribution can't go unnoticed. However, their music was largely mid tempo rock dumbed down from the Faces. They were more of a spectacle than band. Musically, maybe they are a little too highly regarded but they are the band that put the shock and confrontational spirit into the punk movement.

GloiGloi
06-06-2009, 04:37 PM
I quite liked a few of their tracks but they were all shock value and publicity really. I still like Anarchy in the UK. I like The Clash but The Damned and The Stranglers were my favorites. I was going to a lot of gigs in the mid 70s and I saw a lot of really awful punk bands. There was some real rubbish out there.

Precisely. It's also a really unclassy gesture, too...a simple "No, we don't believe the Hall of Fame has integrity" would have gotten their point across better and without them sounding like obnoxious attention whores. Honestly, their letter sounded like something a fourteen year old punk rawk kiddy would write.

Nick Cave's speech at the MTV Music Awards is a perfect example of how the Sex Pistols should have conducted themselves.

No kidding about the Stooges - hard to believe "I Wanna Be Your Dog" was from 1969! That tune is pure punk.

When I was 18, I was quite the Clash fanboy myself. I've long since realized that they are a pop sham in the face of the towering creativity and intensity of Pere Ubu or Birthday Party (to name just two).

Edit: OK, maybe "pop sham" is a little harsh. The Clash has their place, but to have one's musical world revolve around them just seems silly.

Hmm. I dissent a bit from this opinion. Although The Clash are nowhere near my list of favorite punk groups, Joe is a legendary lyricist, and not only within the punk genre, either. He ranks right up there with Springsteen, Cohen, and Dylan.

That may be true, although I generally don't absorb lyrics too well. For the most part, vocals only qualify as another instrument to me. Much of the music I'm most passionate about is purely instrumental.
