Replayability: Halo 3. Gears of War is fun, but after you beat it, thats it. Its very linear too, so you can't take five different paths to the same target. Halo has tons of easter eggs and the skulls to look for.
Level of Fun(Offline): Tie. Gears has amazing simple, yet fun gameplay thats easy to use and get used to. Halo has tons of weapons, enemies, vehicles, and other things to keep you coming back.
Level of Fun(Online): Gears. I played a good amount of both online and it was a blast. Gears matches can only hold up to 8 people with no respawns. Its fun and makes you adopt a strategy or else. The people are usually nicer too. And since voice chat is off during a match, there are no 10 year-olds cussing the hell out of you for killing them. Halo is a random grab every time. There's tons of different modes to choose from, the best being Big Team Battle. A full 8-on-8 Team Matches. Voice chat is only between your team, so someone from the other team can't yell at you and the annoying 10 year-olds are reduced alot. Its hard to get a match for Gears, but when you do, its awesome.
Length: Gears. Gears is alot longer than Halo. Gears' levels are separated into acts with each act divided into between 4-10 levels, around an hour long. I beat Halo on Heroic in 3 hours.
I would ask for Gears. But thats just me.

Gears is not as good online IMHO.
Still, Team Fortress 2 is 360's best online multiplayer. I think Halo 3 is pure simple fun. But TF2 is more tactical.
And others say they don't play Halo online much. Me and my Team Doubles buddy play it all the time now.

For what you are looking for, apples is probably right with The Orange Box. Its five games in one, which pretty much means unlimited replayabilty

I thank all of you for your help especially devo with his long explanation, but the choices are only Gears or Halo but Call of Duty is something I might buy myself after Christmas. But as I said thanks for the help. I've played Halo 2 a little and the whole legacy of Halo makes me want it but there's nothing like good 'ol blood splatterin' everywhere like in Gears so to be honest I think I'll just get both. And IMO from what I've seen on G4 and such with Halo with Capture the Flag and Team Battles and Deathmatch I mean they all sound fun so I think I'll be playin' both a lot(Along with Rockband and GH3.)

Halo 3 was a letdown for me. I liked the campaign in GoW a lot better too. It was new and fresh wheras Halo 3 was like Halo 2 with some new features.

You can't go wrong either way both games are awesome. If you care more about the story mode go with Gears of War I have played through it at least 10 times I have only played through Halo 3 twice. If you care more about online gameplay go with Halo 3. Halo 3 has more online game types, more weapons, more people in a match, and vehicles. Also the Halo 3 custom games are great.

You'll regret that desicion, well...not regret since you are actually planning on getting it. But CoD4 is definitly an awsome experience, both single player campaing and online.
I'm currently playing my second runthrough of the single player campaing this time in Veteran difficulty mode, Holy Sh*t! it's a seems a lot more fun now than the first time, so realistic, with a couple of well place shoots by the enemy your down!! it is HAAAARD!!!

Neither, Call of Duty 4 dominates all shooters out on both console and PC right now.

+1
If you're limited to GoW or Halo3, though, I would recommend Halo 3. GoW has a better singleplayer campaign, but its multiplayer has nothing to do with the singleplayer and gets awfully boring pretty fast (roll, shotgun, rinse and repeat). Halo 3 has better multiplayer and the 4 player coop is a blast.
To me, good singleplayer = rental. Good multiplayer = purchase.
