View Full Version : Use the Rep System!

As many of us have noticed, the online for this game in score duels and tug of war is quite flawed. While this won't make a huge impact, it should still be done none the less. Basically, just remember to use the rep system guys. If a player quits out, leave them negative rep for that. if a player is clearly playing below their skill level to make it easier to win, give them negative rep for being "overly agressive". Lastly, if a player actually does play through a song, take the time to reward them with positive rep for it, as many people these days don't seem to actually do that.

Agreed. It's sad that people deserve positive reps just for not quitting, but I started giving them as well. If someone's getting killed and they finish out the song, the least you can do is give them a good review.

That's what I can do. I just ended up playing with a platinum artist. For some reason they were playing on medium when obviously they could play a lot better than that. I was tempted to give them negative rep, but they did get me an achievement so I can't complain, lol.
Then there's this other guy who can clearly play on a harder difficulty, I've given him negative rep and I've still been stuck playing with him like 5 times and he gets 100% every single time.

I think it depends on what instruments you are trying to use. Whenever I try playing drums, it takes forever to find people to play with.

i've tried drums and guitar on all of the multiplayer modes and waited around 5 to 10 minutes on each one. i have yet to get anyone to join a game.

I let some friends play medium, (tug of war ofcourse) so whatever they did I apologized for already I believe.

It's not being a mindless xbox fanboy to suggest that someone should move to the bigger online community if they're having problems finding players. Obviously an expensive solution (new console + new rock band = ouch), but one that would work.

Aside from Nuke's case where he let someone play, you're neglecting the fact that someone could play the endless setlist on Expert for one instrument, and then completely suck at vocals / alternate instrumentation. Just because you excel at one thing doesn't mean you have to excel at everything.
Also, who are you to determine that someone's playing "below their level?" For example, I play on Hard for Drums because that's where it makes the most sense, I do very well there, and there is (contrary to what a few might have you believe) some healthy competition at that level. Yes, I -can- play expert on about half the songs, but what fun is it when a song comes up in a tier I haven't done yet, and I get my ass handed to me? No thanks, I'll play on whatever difficulty I'm comfortable at until I'm able to move up.
What makes you think people farm rating points at lower difficulties? That's just ridiculous. I just played someone in a Medium Score Duel (invited to the game, I didn't choose that one), and I was bored out of my mind.

How would you know if someone is "clearly below" their skill level? I normally play guitar on hard/expert while one of my roommates plays on medium. So every time he plays I run the chance of having my rep lowered? Similarly, my other roommate plays drums on hard while I play on medium. So, again, I stand to lower my rep just by letting someone else play my game. Can't say I agree with that.
The quitting thing however, yeah, I would definitely report them if:
a) They are a known quitter or obviously quit when they're fairly far behind.
b) They quit on me more than once.
Why? Because things happen. Temporary connection hiccups, power outages, or maybe they just have to go somewhere for some reason (has happened with me a few times). So if someone quits once, I'll just usually check the "last played" list in the dashboard after about 5-10 minutes to see if they're still online. If they are, then I will decide if I want to mark them.

The rep system on the 360 is pointless. I play GOW quite often and get negative feedback in ranked matches quite a lot. I'm not rude, I don't glitch, I don't 'mess' with people while they're down before killing them. I play the game as it should be and always congratulate the winning team if I lose. However, beating people does seem to mean instant neg feedback - pretty childish if you ask me.
I'm not saying your idea is bad, but i don't think anyone pays attention to the rep system at all so I don't see how effective it'll be. When I started getting negative rep at first, it really annoyed me. Now I couldn't care less.

Eh, it's not always with the thought of an easy win. There are a lot of songs on Medium where I can get 100% notes maybe 40% of the time, but there are some where I get 3 stars, and you just can't predict what song you're going to get. Even playing solo, Medium is what I play at when I just want to relax and have fun.
Anyway, even if you get 100%, that's far from a guaranteed win -- there's strategy in exactly when and how to use Overdrive, and with two people who play at 100%, that's what the match ends up becoming about. Even on those occasions when I get 100%, it doesn't always net me a win!

Even on those occasions when I get 100%, it doesn't always net me a win!I agree completely. I got my rear handed to me twice by a guy (gamertag The Mars Army) because he was smarter about using his Overdrive. We hit the same number of notes, and he just beat me, plain and simple. I like playing against people who are savvy about where and how to use the juice to overcome a flubbed note.

Couple of things here.
People do get accidentally disconnected. I wouldn't suggest leaving a negative on someone that did it once. Twice, sure...but not once. I'd be pretty irritated to suffer an accidental disconnect during a match, and doubly irritated to discover my opponent had given me a negative rating for it.
"Playing below their skill level" is a silly thing to rate someone negatively for. I've beaten the game on Expert guitar, but I stick to Hard online. Why? Because it's a competition. You should be playing at the highest level you can comfortably handle and be competitive. You shouldn't be playing at a level where you're struggling to finish the song. Sure, I'd play on Expert if I had any idea what the song is going to be, but I'm not really all that interested in running into GGAHT on Expert, especially since if I'm online I've usually had a couple of beers. Also, in my experience, most (not all) people that play Expert versus modes online are lifeless scorewhores that have nothing better to do with their lives than sit around practicing solos all day long so they can add one more "Expert" rating to their forum sig. I don't really want to play with these OMFG U SUXXOR LOZER kids, I'd rather play with people that just play for fun.
Remember that rep ratings work both ways, so you might want to be careful about arbitrarily throwing negative ratings around or your rep is going to end up in the toilet. It's not difficult to figure out who left you a negative one, and then return the favor.

I've got a question about what is considered "quitting out."
I've gone online on a couple of Player Matches, and when I find a match, the other person picks a song and then we play. After that, it's my turn to pick a song, but I'm done playing for that time, so I quit the match. Is that bad? Or does it not even matter 'cause it's not ranked?

What everyone is referring to here is quitting a Ranked Match midsong when it becomes obvious that you are not going to beat the other player. Quitting between songs is not a problem.

Same here. I had 2 songs in a row on Med drums last night where we were pretty evenly matched notes-wise, but he had the meter well onto his side for most of the song. I beat him (just barely) both times with a higher Rock Ending score. Man, he must have been frustrated!!
Later, I switched to guitar (still haven't muted my drums and it was bedtime for my daughter, who's room is right below where I play.). Of course, every band I ended up in always started as me and another guitar. Sometimes I was lucky enough to have a 3 person band. Anyway, I started playing Bass. I just let the other player pick his instrument first, and they usually chose guitar. I was having a great time bumpin' away, but medium was turning out to be way too easy. So I stepped up to Hard, which was a lot more fun. Until we hit some of the tougher songs and I actually had to be saved twice in one song. The next song I completely failed the whole band! Which got me promptly booted.:D
Pretty clear example to me that playing within your comfort zone is important online. Sure, you're going to own some people on some songs, but you're likely to have your ass handed to you on others.
I did have a couple of people quit-out on me multiple times, but didn't know how to find them to neg their rep. Since I hadn't memorized the odd amalgamation of numbers and letters they call a gamer tag. Am I to understand that I go to the Dashboard and find "last played"?

On XBox 360 it's one of the obvious options right there in networked multiplayer. I have been assuming the PS3 has something similar. Can someone confirm?

I'm looking for an answer to this, too. In my list of "last played", it only shows the players who completed the songs. The quitters don't show up. So... how can you give them an "avoid" rating?

That is strange, they show up for me. I've only given out 2 negative rep, one in Rock Band and one in Guitar Hero. The guy in GH was clearly too good, he had FC'd 20 songs on expert and was playing ranked pro face-off on hard. The RB player left literally as my guy was cheering for having just won. Quite a convenient time to lose connection? Perhaps more likely just a sore loser. I try not to leave in tug of war games when I am down, because there is always a chance he/she will make a mistake and I can save myself with overdrive. I played two guys who were really good sports, I played each of them twice in a row and blew out one guy and got a narrow victory against the other. They were both really awesome and a perfect example of what this game should be like.
